Tahoe Rim Trail 5 Day Fastpacking Attempt in High Snow Year

  • The Tahoe Rim Trail forms a complete loop 165 miles around the Lake Tahoe Basin on the border of California and Nevada. A thru-hike of the trail typically takes 10-15 days.
    My friend Adam and I had planned on fastpacking the trail over a 5 day period in late June of 2019. The only problem is that this happened to be a particularly high snow year, with snowpack in the Sierra Nevada range at over 200% of average, and 33 times the levels of the previous year.
    While we expected the snow to significantly slow us down, we were optimistic that we could complete the trail. But we never could have anticipated just how much of a challenge that would prove to be.

    It’s absolutely criminal that you don’t have more subs and views. I follow so many running channels and watch so much running content and it took forever for you to come into the algorithm. I really hope that changes soon because the content you create is definitely up there with some of the better channels on here.

    Your videos are like mini movies. The care and attention that goes into each one is insane. I know a bit about video editing and the amount of time it must take to create each of these blows my mind. I've got to think each one of these takes 60 - 120 hours of editing, and that doesn't even count the time it takes to organize and consolidate the footage from all of your devices.
    Thanks for sharing.

    Really nice work: the footage and also the fact that you told it as it was. Sometimes things don't go to plan and being agile in the mountains is key; the fact you guys re-planned as new information (amount of snow, speed, lack of calories, tiredness) etc. surfaced was excellent. The film displays good outdoor skills and choices, so thank-you! Hopefully people watching this will learn some lessons (i.e. even though you downloaded the map onto your GPS watch, you brought good old maps and compasses and new how to use them, just in case!).

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks for pointing all of that out 💪. While it’s important to have a plan, you never want to fall in love with it. We had spent a lot of time researching possible bailout options in order to have a plan ‘b’ (and ‘c’).

    So cool to check your vlog 👍 . I have a tip... I'm an offshore-yacher in Sweden I do quit some overnight sailing. Hear your complaint of wet socks and next to skin layers. When I have wet socks and have my off shift in the bunk time and in my sleeping bag (it happens 🙂 ) I take off my socks and put them in the bag not on my feet but in the bag often they dry in the bag of the body heat in 2 hours. Keep up the good work.

    Hi, your adventure and the resulting video is absolutely fantastic! Interesting fact: In 2019 in Austria - central Europe I went in a long and custom speed hike at high altitude with my bro and we encountered a lot of snow like you. Tough year, isn't?... I really like your gear btw and how you slept. Thanks a lot for sharing.

    Hi Jeff, thanks for another great movie. Looks amazing and at the same time really hard because of all the snow. I just got into fast packing and I am really interested in your gear - so if you have the chance to give us a look into this I think there would be many people loving it. Thanks again for the movie and best wishes form Germany, Max

    Incredible video, Jeff! Well shot, well edited, well narrated, truly fantastic! Honest question for someone interested in getting into fastpacking... how much of the time did you hike vs run? I'm having trouble adjusting to the load on the uphills, it feels like only the downs and flats do I come close to something approximating "running".

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  Před 4 lety +2

      Thanks! They say fastpacking is "hiking the ups, running the downs, and jogging the flats". So it sounds like you're doing just fine. Just try to keep your pack weight as low as possible and to use poles which really help on the climbs.
      For the TRT, we had a hard time even running the flats with all of the snow which is one way we really lost time - normally this trail is quite runnable.

    Thank you for sharing your amazing journey . Lots of planning and preparation. Is mid-October still a good time to do this ? I mean , if there are storms , you’re always pretty close to civilization to bail . I think lol .

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  Před 3 lety

      Hey Joseph, I’m not sure about October - that’s probably a question for a local. Like you say, there are lots of bailout options but definitely a few stretches where you’re pretty remote so of course just make sure you’re prepared for the worst.

    • @sov413
      @sov413 Před 3 lety +2

      October usually can get pretty hairy. You don't want to have to bail in the middle of a long section like Barker to Echo. mid September in my opinion is the best time to go, although you will need to pack more water than usual, as most snow has melted and winter weather hasn't come in yet.

    Strong effort but Sierra snow in a big year is legit July or no July. Just imagine what that through hiker was dealing with a month before you guys in June on passes to 13k in the Southern Sierra. The Northern Sierra are the baby mountains....:)

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  Před 3 lety

      It’s a valid question. I’m not sure fastpacking is all that different from any other ultralight approach though. We just like to jog the flats and run the downs when we can.
