  • In this video, the Outdoor Vitals team sets out to fastpack the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim. From the South Kaibab Trail, the group starts running with all their camping and backpacking gear (along with some prototype fastpacks created by OV) down to the Colorado River. After crossing to the other side of the Grand Canyon, the group makes their way into the world-famous Phantom Ranch and Bright Angel Campground for a brief break, before making their way through the side canyon, all the way up the North Kaibab Trail to the North Rim. Though that's where most hikers and runners end their journey, the OV team turns right around to go back down into the canyon, camp in the Bright Angel Campground, and then hike their way back out the Bright Angel Trail. At over 49 miles, the double crossing of the Grand Canyon turns out to be a harrowing journey for some, and an impossible one for others. We hope you enjoy this little documentary's journey, drama, action, and breathtaking views.

    Kudos to all of you on completing this amazing adventure. WOW!! awesome video. I hiked the south rim several years ago, stayed at Phantom Ranch and so enjoyed seeing the footage on the trail, such good memories. I agree with Tayson that seeing the canyon from either rim is spectacular but nothing compares to seeing it from the bottom.

    Two great ways to remove lactic acid from muscles, besides electrolyte mix, are Vit B1 and magnesium oil. Take some B1 prior to hike, and use oil on muscles as needed. Bonus...#1 magnesium gives a great energy boost, #2 induces great sleep at night, and #3 reduces anxiety and panic disorder! 😊

    Awesome job gentlemen!! I ran my 4th Rim2River (down the S.Kaibab and into Phantom, and then up the Bright Angel trail) 2 weeks after you were there. The wind was insane! I'd been watching the weather for several weeks, and they were having a pretty gnarly heat wave when you were there. Brutal! I've run 9 R2Rs, in 8yrs, and 4 to the river and back in 2 yrs, so I'll offer some advice. We always add a couple magnesium lysinate pills, broken in half, to our 21oz soft flasks. The lysinate version is more absorbable than the cheap stuff, so it works. We also add a small vitamin B complex pill. We don't add the mag and the B to every fill-up. More like, every other fill up, and for the amount of time our runs take, we only do 1 vitamin B, in that very first fill. We're rolling pretty good, so we don't carry any water for the first 7mi. So that means no water at all, going down S.Kaibab, on a Rim-2-River, or, no water until Cottonwood CG, when we do an R2R from the North. Of course running it is different than what you did, so you'd certainly be carrying a lot more water, 100% of the time. Our electrolyte mix is Liquid I.V. We've tried Cytomax, Tail Wind, Fluid, and Genius Electrolytes. Liquid I.V. also has 2 versions that are their energy multiplier, and those have become an important addition to our big runs. The other thing we carry is a couple of the little 5hr Energy Drink bottles. Those have been a life saver. Last tip, get in the creeks and soak your shirts and hair, and do the same thing in the water spigots at all the water stops....and when in the shade, take off the hats and hoods and let your heads cool your blood. Keeping your core temp low at the Grand Canyon, is a huge key to success there. BTW, loved that you ran into the hall monitor who couldn't just let the little train of young, fit, dudes, roll on passed for 2 seconds of his day. He had to tie everybody up, piss everyone off, make an ass out of himself in front of his wife, and then go hands on? What a joke.

      I have electrolyte salt/mag pills that do not have Lysinate. Should I buy a different product (suggestion?)? I do plenty of deep wilderness trips as a dedicated Canyoneer, always looking for better supplements. Though, it should go without saying, supplements are no substitute for better training. The Grand has a way of making everyone suffer, at least a little bit, every time ;)

    Adding pockets to accept smart bottles would make the water "situation" much easier. I see the smart bottles in the side pockets, which are difficult to get to, and the Salomon filters on the soft flasks in the vest. Double the water bottles, more time and pain to pull them out and stuff them back in. No ability to have a 'clean' bottle for electrolyte mix or recovery mix. Small change, but accommodates 99% of the fastpacker water systems.
    Don't forget that the process is the part to enjoy. The end of the trip is fulfilling, sure, but you are designing gear for the process, not the end. The process is the point of it all, design process and use process.

    Great video and congratulations on a wonderful adventure. I just wanted to clarify one thing you said that may help future rim2rim hikers. You said there is more water on the Bright Angel trail than the South Kaibab but there is in fact NO water available on the South Kaibab. The shelter at the Tip-off on the South Kaibab trail does collect rainwater off the roof but you need to treat the water and it is definitely not reliable. I was there at the end of May and there was no water because it had not rained in weeks. My nephew was planning to hike rim2rim and asked for advice and I told him to climb up and down stairs for 8 hours straight and then you will be ready.

    I liked your video. I've hiked the Canyon numerous times, but never as a fast pack or trail run. The discussion of the uphill hiker putting hands on Darren was shocking! While I don't condone the action, perhaps the "uphiller" was attempting to convey that uphill has the right of way. During my last hike, as we pulled uphill from the Colorado, a downhill trail runner ran into one of our group. No harm, no foul; but it could have been an issue. Another problem encountered was a couple of trail runners having a conversation at normal voice level outside of Indian Garden CG at 2:30 AM. While I admire endurance tests, let's remember others are there to fully enjoy the Canyon at a slower pace and deserve safety and respect.

    Having done R2R and rim to river and back in a day before, a few questions. With all the planning that went into this, why not stay at Mather the night before? It's in the park and allows for an early start. Running down, unless you can truly run down with no deceleration, it makes no sense, is not much faster than walking quickly and ruins your quads. If you just walk across quickly, it only takes a little over nine hours, there isn't a need to run at all except for the phantom to Manzanita section.
    Training!! This trail requires a great deal of eccentric quad contraction training, ie squats, lunges, up and especially down stairs. Plain running and hiking just doesn't cut it. All of this info is out there already. There are 50+ yo people who do this, it's all about the prep.

    Thanks for the adventure documentation, OV Tribe member here, Is there more information on the prototype pack you are developing? Definitely interested in fastpacking. I was at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon last month.

      Not yet. We are still developing. Stay tuned though we are getting a lot of miles on these packs and think the development is coming along nicely!

    Great work guys! One question: if you where to just hike rim to rim in one day would you prefer starting from the North rim or the South rim?

    • @TaysonWhittaker
      @TaysonWhittaker  Před rokem

      I think it wouldn't be a whole lot different. I think most people go south rim to North rim and back because the climb from the Colorado to the south rim is a little less elevation. So you do that when you're at your most tired rather than hiking out the North rim when you're at your most tired...

    It's not Manzanita campground, it's called Cottonwood Campground on the North Rim! Just FYI :)

    A tip, for your interview segments, buy some moving blankets from walmart $20 a piece throw them on the floor, the corners of the room and hang on the walls not on camera and it will dramatically improve the audio quality of your seated interviews. There is an aggressive echo in there that needs to be squelched.

    You guys crack me up talking about your wives will never let you hear the end of it if you did not complete the Grand Canyon. When we were doing our annual Rim to Rim to Rim (we take a day break on the North Rim) I woke up on the North rim with stomach issues at 3AM before starting back to the South Rim and told my wife I was not sure if I should hike back to the South Rim. She told me that I was going to be SO Disappointed in myself if I didn't go and basically told me to MAN UP and hit the trail 🤣. So I went and made it to Manzanita Rest Area (The Pump House) and started throwing up and could not even keep any water down. So the Death March Started! I made it to Phantom Ranch and was planning to sleep by the river until dark and hike out when it was cooler at night. But I lucked out and was able to get a bunk. The next day I was good and did not have any more issues it was a 24-hour bug. I is funny now so whenever I am feeling a little wimpy I just think MAN UP 😂 and push on you, big baby! You all did great I have done the Rim to Rim to Rim 12 times with no issues and it's a great hike however my journey is easier because of the one-day break on the North Rim and we only have day packs. Thanks for sharing you trip! Good Times and Memories!

    Nice! I did the South Rim 17-mile loop 30yrs ago. Did you guys drop off some of your overnight gear when you first passed thru Phantom Ranch?
    I was a bit insane back then, ran down with a Fanny pack and two small water bottles. No snacks. At least I was quick, 1h15m down. They had a pay phone at the bottom At Phantom. Made a call. Then ran back up. 3h30m. I’m 60yrs old now. Maybe I’ll do it again with more gear!

    Traffic going up always gets the right of way (in the video they say nornally). But laying hands on people is UNCOOOOOOL. I always make a point of stepping to the side so its irrefutable im giving way. The worst ive ever done is cussed someone out.

  • @bxpais

    Great video, but I was quite disturbed by your description of your encounter with the ascending party on your descent. Uphill traffic ALWAYS has right of way, and downhill traffic should ALWAYS 1. move to the side of the trail, 2. stop, and 3. yield to uphill traffic. Period, no exceptions. This is rooted in the alpineering world where it is an issue of extreme safety. The R2R is not always that dangerous but has plenty of exposed areas. By your own dialogue you appear to have not properly yielded. And, from your word choices is sounds like you hardly even broke a running pace. If my assessment is correct, shame on you for failed trail etiquette and shame on me for endorsing your brand.

      @awakemyoutdoorsoul Před 3 měsíci +2

      I always yield to the faster person regardless of uphill or downhill, just my practice, and based on what I saw in the video there was plenty of room for both parties to safely pass without anyone in danger. I think that if it had been single track they would have stopped and let the uphill party pass but the trail was very wide where the pass occurred. Just my opinion, there is no reason for anyone to yield when the trail is wide enough for parties to safely pass each other.
