Črnuče, situated in the northern part of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is a town located on the left bank of the Sava River. It falls within the boundaries of the traditional region of Upper Carniola and is now considered part of the Central Slovenia Statistical Region.
The area bears evidence of early settlement, as the remains of a prehistoric fortification with embankments were discovered at Tabor Hill (370 m). Another prehistoric fort has been identified south of this location at Gradišče. At the present-day bridge crossing the Sava River, a Roman bridge supported by 26 piles once stood. It is believed that this site corresponds to the Romans' Sava Fluvia station, as marked on the Peutinger Map. Traces of firing trenches, dating back to 1813 and used for guarding the bridge during the Napoleonic Wars, are still preserved. Additionally, within the surrounding woods leading to Spodnje Gameljne, fragments of a French gravestone from that era can be found along a pathway.
In 1953, Črnuče incorporated the former villages of Gmajna and Podboršt. However, in 1979, Črnuče itself was annexed by the City of Ljubljana, thereby ceasing to exist as an independent settlement.
