Pentatonix has been around for more than 10 years. They have 3 Grammy Awards (the FIRST a cappella band in music history to have Grammys). They are multi-platinum selling band, their albums topped Billboard Top 200 (the ONLY a cappella band in history to achieve that), they've been releasing multiple covers and originals, their latest completely original album came out last year. They released a documentary, travelled the world with huge sold out tours, they are the most successful a cappella band ever. They all are American.
Kirstin, Scott and Mitch grew up together in Texas. In 2011 they decided to participate in the TV show called 'The Sing Off', they found Kevin (their only beatboxer) through the youtube video, they found Avi (their first bass) through a friend of a friend, and they won that TV competition together.
Their previous bass went solo in 2017, and he was replaced by Matt Sallee. The other members are still the same.
They are THAT good live, you should check out their off-mic private performance of 'Daft Punk'.

The officials at Grammy wanted to award Pentatonix, but didn't have a category to fit them in - so they changed the category to include A Capella. This was their first Grammy.
The second was for a piece by Tchaikovsky which is instrumental - performed by a group who do not use instruments!! Go figure. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
The third was a colab with none other than Dolly Parton - Jolene.

Oh Ye of little faith! Yes, that is their voices! They all have tremendous ranges and abilities. Mitch is a counter tenor and can go even higher than that! Give a listen to their cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah to hear 4 of the five sing. The beatboxer does sing and I guess to hear him you would need to react to their cover of John Lennon’s Imagine. The deep bass, Avi Kaplan, is sadly no longer with them but his replacement, Matt Sallee can hold his own. To hear him and the beat boxer doing their thing together, I suggest their cover of New Rules/Are you That Somebody. Good stuff. The white haired guy is Scott Hoying classified as a Baritone but he has a HUGE range and will surprise you. The girl is Kirstie( rhymes with thirsty) and she is a Mezzo Suprano. Kevin Olusola is the beat boxer and is also a Tenor. He is multitalented to nth degree as you will find out if you stick with reactions to this amazing group. I’ll stick along for the ride if you continue with this amazing group! The high pitched guy and the girl change their looks A LOT! So if you see someone that looks different, it is them. The bearded bass was the only change.

  • @cellokimmy
    @cellokimmy Pƙed 2 lety +104

Yes that’s them and their ranges. There’s a version of them doing this just standing in a room, no mics or anything, recorded on a cell phone. You can watch that to compare what’s processed or not. The cell phone is bad at picking up Avi’s low notes, but you can tell he’s singing. There are also videos that show Avi’s voice messing with speakers because it’s so low.
    Members are:
    Kevin Olusola- beatbox, cello, tenor
Avi Kaplan-bass (he left in 2017 on good terms)
Matt Sallee- bass (replaced Avi, isn’t in this video)
Scott Hoying- baritone (Jack Frost looking dude in this video, sings bass when the bass singer has the melody, can sing high as well).
Mitch Grassi- tenor, all things high. Possibly the best vocal control on the planet right now.
Kirstin or Kirsty (rhymes with thirsty)- technically I think a mezzo soprano but she can do it all.

They all have tremendous vocal range. The three main vocalists were friends in high school and were known as The Trio. They added the bass and beatboxer to form Pentatonix in order to compete in season 3 of The Sing Off. They won. Eleven years later, they are still going strong.
Recommend their version of The Prayer.
Please ignore the negativity from those who don’t want the videos filtered. PTX copyrighting is strict, so just do what you need to do. We have all seen these videos numerous times and can always view the originals when we want.

  • @martinhafner2201
    @martinhafner2201 Pƙed 2 lety +7

That's their voices. They have sung this song live in concert. Mitch Grassi is the high tenor. Kirstie Maldonado is a mezzo soprano also known as a high alto. Scott Hoying is called the baritone, but he can sing a solid tenor range and covers bass when the bass is on a lead. The bass is/was Avi Kaplan and is really a basso profundo. There aren't many of those, especially in pop music. I've heard him sing an A1, but he may be able to go lower. Avi also has a very nice low tenor voice. He left the group in mid-2017 for family and life-goal type reasons. Kevin Olusola is the beatboxer, but also sings tenor now and then, when he isn't playing cello at the same time. Did you notice how constant and fast he was beatboxing? EDM is hard on beatboxers.
They individually have wide ranges. As a group their range is disturbingly excellent and wide.
You should try their Hallelujah video. All of them except Kevin get a nice out-front lead so you can hear each voice.
Also, they cover the Beatles' song Imagine where everyone gets a lead, but the song doesn't have a wide range.
They did one other EDM song - Love Again - which is a complete original. Kevin's beatboxing is very unusual in that song.

Now you know why I linked the live performance right with the official video... I did say people tended to want proof 😆
Sorry it took some work to get the video approved, so glad you did it for me anyway. I knew it was in dispute limbo when it didn't show up over the weekend. That's the problem that comes from PTX getting on a big label (RCA/Sony).
The beatboxer and bass (this one and their current (the only member change in 10 years)) can both/all sing, too, and every member of Pentatonix has at least a 4 octave range, so they're pretty stacked vocally.
I picked a pretty Mitch Grassi (high tenor) light song, so I'm happy you picked him out anyway since he's my favorite 😄 His highs are insane and fans call the shock at his voice getting "Mitch slapped".
If you want to try out any more PTX I think you would probably like their Evolution Of videos... they are medleys performed live in one take sitting in front of the camera so it's easier to see what they're all doing (still mind-blowing and hard to decide where to look, but at least you can see them! And no post-production!) I'd recommend Evolution of Michael Jackson or Evolution of Beyoncé... there is also Evolution of Music, Rihanna and Ariana Grande.

They are all skilled musicians/singers with a large vocal range, including the beatboxer when he isn't having to beatbox (he's a tenor/baritone). There are a hundred great videos by them out there, but two you might want to check out are PTX Hallelujah and PTX Imagine (they all sing a solo part in Imagine, including the beatboxer). These 5 were the original group members from 2011 to 2017, when the bass guy (beard, no clothes) left to pursue a solo career, and was replaced by Matt Sallee. Other than that, they are always the same 5, although they often change hair color and Mitch (guy with high voice) is thinner in later videos. Looking forward to more - also, check out PTX Bohemian Rhapsody -yes, they did it a cappella!

Let's help him out. At 5:23 when they saiy "HEY!", they are, from left to right:
    1. Mitch Grassi (tenor lead and backing vocals) in the teal shirt with black stripes (back row)
    2. Avi Kaplan (vocal bass, vocal percussion, bass lead and backing vocals) in the black button-up shirt wearing the hat (front row)
    3. Scott Hoying (baritone lead and backing vocals) in the black V-neck shirt (back row)
    4. Kevin Olusola (vocal percussion, beatboxing, backing vocals) in the brown collared shirt wearing a necklace (front row)
    5. Kirstin Maldonado (soprano lead and backing vocals) in the black tank-top wearing earrings (also, the ONLY GIRL)
So you can wrap your head around it, in the video at 6:24 they are, in order:
    Avi -- Mitch -- Kevin -- Scott -- Kirstin
In September 2017, Avi Kaplan, the group’s original bass, left the group amicably and was replaced by Matt Sallee (not pictured here).
Pentatonix have won three Grammy Awards: they were the first a cappella act to win Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella, doing so in 2015 and 2016,[17] and Best Country Duo/Group Performance in 2017.
So now you see them in makeup and costume and what they look like in real life. Those ARE their REAL VOICES, the singing style with voices ONLY, no instruments is called "a cappella", and they are all friends with 3 originally from Arlington, TX, so they are not foreign as you thought.

They didn't just win a Grammy for it, they had a $600 budget, did the audio in their closet and the video work in the kitchen with a ring light. There is a little reverb in the polished recording, but if you listen i. Concert and off mic, it isn't too far. They don't record anything they can't do live. Every member of this group is mega talented. Mich and Scott did a group project, Mitch has some solo stuff. Scott , along with their behind the scenes guy Ben Brahm, is the creator behind both Citizen Queen and the mega talented Aca Pop kids. Kirsten has solo work and was in Kinky Boots on Broadway. Kevin is like insanely talented, gave up starting med school to give these guys a try and hasn't looked back. He is a classically trained (and again insanely talented) cellist, also plays sax, has performed at Carnegie Hal, beat boxes, can play cello and beat box at the same damn time, has some amazing solo work where is composes and arranges his own stuff. Oh, he is fluent, and I mean fluent, in Mandarin. Many of their early originals were written by Kevin and Avi. Avi was a classically trained basso profundo (the lowest and deepest). He has just finished an internship and had a potential job offer for an opera company in AZ I think. His college group is the only junior/community college group to win an intercollegiate college acapella championship. He left amicably to follow his own path with a solo career and helped pic his replacement. And Matt. Matt is totally living the dream. He sat in the front row at a competition with his high school acapella group and watched PTX and said, I want to do this, i want to be these guys. He goes on to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music, is a me.ber and later president of their premier acapella group Pitch Slapped and then is asked to audition for PTX. Not too many people can say they are living their dream to this degree.

The *$400* budget that is often cited was for the *_props_* - costume, wigs, make-up, contacts, cyberpunk headset, etc.
If you think a video of this complexity can be filmed and edited for $400, then you have a lot to learn about music video editing! 😆

Yeah. MASSIVE Talent. Each individual a Lead Vocal in their own right. The way they compose each song / arrange each cover to ensure each group member maximises their unique sound & stepping back & forward to help each other SHINE is just as impressive as their artistic talent. PTX is brilliant & continues to evolve. Enjoy.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL.....welcome to the PTX rabbit hole! Yes, that's his voice (Mitch). There is a recording of a private viewing of Daft Punk with no mics, it was done for someone through the Make A Wish Foundation. You should react to Hallelujah, the offical video. It's called a Mitch slap when you hear his range.

Great first reaction to PTX - loved it and have subscribed and really hope you fall into the rabbit hole that is Pentatonix. I see you already have a couple more reactions out - I'll go watch those next. Yes it is all them - there are videos (camera phones) of them doing this off mic in what looks to be a hotel room or somesuch. They are incredible. If you liked this maybe check out their original work (yep, another talent to add to the long lists, songwriting), Love Again. I'm sure others will have filled you in on their background a little, and the member change in 2017, and that they are from the US.... and no doubt you will have been given many suggestions for songs to react to! Enjoy!

its always fun when someone experiences the Daft Punk as a first Pentatonix exposure. They are so setup to think Pentatonix isn't real nor could be capable of everything else they will experience when they get to Hallelujah, or Mary Did You Know, or The Prayer. It's this order of Daft Punk first that completely blows up minds!
