Hey guys in this video I will show how to replace valve cover or valve cover gasket on BMWs N55 engine on E70 X5 and it is exactly the same on E71 X6 after 2011 (2008-2010 X6 used n54 engine)
Thank you for watching - Auta a dopravní prostředky
I would not be able to keep my 2 BMWs running without your videos. My E70 has needed a lot of work over the last 2 years, and I have found videos and tips from Tim on every repair I needed to do, and the tools to get it done.
My F32 has only had a few things, but once again I was able to find what I needed in the videos here from Tim and Zeiten. You are a money saver for me.
Thank you, happy to help, more videos to come😉👍
This was such a solid video - perfect for an average home tech start to finish. Thank you very much my guy.
One MASSIVE TIP for all - disconnect your battery (neg terminal only) or else your fuel pump will keep on squiring fuel from the line while you’re working. That’s not even the big deal - the job takes about 5+ hours and YOU WILL KILL YOUR BATTERY if you don’t because the recirc pump keeps running.
Follow his direction (buy a pic tool if you don’t have one) and you won’t brake anything.
The best step by step DYI I have seen, thank You!
Thank you🙌
your a pro, appreciate your laymen terms, cautions, and remoinders
HERE WE GO!! Professional at work!! great detail tim!!100--100 ty
Great precise instructions. You're a master at what you do. Thanks for doing this DIY, I'm sure ours will need it soon. Great job. Please keep posting BMW videos
Thank you, appreciate your feedback
My first valve cover replacement was a successful because of this video. Thank you!
Happy to help🙌
Good to see you, Tim!
Thanks for great video! I wouldn't be able to do this job without it. Much more detailed than others I saw. But after completing change and test driving for a bit, I now feel smell of gasoline when engine is hot. Tried to reinstall fuel rail no changes :(
Check connections to fuel injectors and fuel rail to hpfp
@@Zeiten Thanks for reply. I did. Even bought special tool to apply torque specified by BMW (23Nm) Only issue I see that pipes are not centered perfectly in the middle of the nuts.
One word fucking amazing you did a perfect video I've done other work on my bmw but this saved me so much money and extra headache of trust from other bad mechanics thank you God bless🙌
Happy to help👍
How would I replace knock sensor 4 on x5 2011 50i
The amount of cheap plastics in a premium car is unbelievable.I seriously believe Mercedes is better built than this . It’s one of the best DIY video.
Mercedes is worst. It is actually falling apart and can barely break 100k miles
Hey, I've just removed the valve cover gasket on my 2011 X6 and these instructions were excellent. Thank you. I noticed that the car you were working on had a yellowish caking in the rear most square around the ignition coil openings on the rear two cylinders. I have the same thing and it made the removal of the coil very difficult. What is that dry powdery stuff? is coolant leaking possibly or the oil leaking?
Zeiten....can you share what the approx. cost for this repair is?
This was just an awesome and detailed video @Zeiten! I have the 2013 X5 35i LCI 108k miles and have a P0305 fault code which I'm gonna start with troubleshooting coils/plugs soon. My question is when I get in there and remove everything to do my tune up replacing coils and plugs, should I just knock out replacing the valve cover & PCV valve as preventative maintenance given it most likely will have to be replaced before 120k miles? Or do think I should just hold off and see if I can get 10-20k more miles on the existing valve cover? Thanks in advance! Really appreciate you supporting the BMW community.
Don’t fix something that is not broken😉
Excellent. @zeiten. Your diy's are so helpful for the community, my X5 is at 87,891 miles and will need one. The starter on this LCI post 2011 2013 mostly go without any warnings. Good preventive maintenance . It would be good to have diy on it. Actually would be nice if you could also do one entire diy on preventive maintenance on N55. E70 LCI 😊 🙏 😊
Do you have a video on changing the value cover gaskets and spark plugs on a 2008 bmw x 5 4.8 from start to finish?
Not on x5 but it is almost exactly the same as on 750, here is a link

Great video and very comprehensive and well demonstrated and well explained throughout....as usual. I did have one question for you if you don't mind answering. The end bolt on the driver's side (the one in the back corner by the firewall) broke when I was installing the new one. I bought an Elring from FCP Euro so I'm surprised that it broke, but it did. I removed the cover to try to extract it, but I couldn't drill it out and after several hours, I just crossed my fingers and put the valve cover back on. In your opinion, will this cause a problem? It's at the top of the slant, so I'm hoping it'll be ok as far as oil leaking out is concerned, but I'm afraid it might cause an air leak. Do you have any suggestions? Silicone seal maybe? Thanks Tim. I really appreciate your attention to detail in your videos.
In the beginning everything will be fine but over time you might develop an air leak, a big chance that it won’t be an issue either, sealing it with selicon would be a good idea but don’t overdo it😉
@@Zeiten Thanks for the quick reply Tim. I'm going to see if I can find a small c-clamp tiger clamp that will fit on that corner and give that a try. It might not be possible, but if it fits, it should give it the same force that a bolt would. Once again, thanks for the excellent videos and tips. You not only save your viewers money, you help to make sure the job is done right.
What was the estimated time that it took you to do the complete job, despite the fact that you finished...so I know why I don't have a garage and I will work in the street please and may God bless you, amen...my son
Well i do this job in about 2 hours, but i’ve done hundreds of those, if it is your first time expect 4-6 hours depends on how handy you are
Thanks for watching
Great Video. I did the valve cover, OFHG and cleaned the intake valves. After re assembly had engine codes P112F-Manifold absolute Pressure to Throttle Angle-Too High (Bank 1)-Stored and P10D5-Pending- Cold Start Engine Coolant Temp Too High. Have you had those and can i PM you to troubeshoot?
Mine makes a loud high pitched noise when it runs, I was told it was something dealing with the vacuum so they said I needed to replace the cover. I was also told it was a 4 hour job which would be $450 for labor and I was told the part would be $345. I did see other ones online of course for about $100, $200 which seems way better than $345-$470. I’m wondering what’s so different about them because they wouldn’t sell them if they weren’t safe right?
Noooo, stay away from cheap valve covers they simply don’t fit and don’t last long at all (I’m talking less than 500 miles even you manage to fit it in), valve cover must be either genuine or any good brand, elring, febi, uro is not bad, rein
High pitch sound- pcv failure and yes it’s built into valve cover
How we can have your service ( which states you to see have lucky ) thanks you for your service and video are great
How do you know you need to change this? What re the symptoms perhaps? Or approximately how many km until it needs change?
Watch the video it’s all explained there
Thank you for taking the time to answer me... and I find it embarrassing to ask you how much torque is given to the screws on the cover... if it doesn't bother you and you can tell me and thank you very much... I'll be a great help to me
Around 8.5 nm it’s usually written on valve cover
hello, what you think what is the main problem leaking oil on N57 on valve cover, I'm on 68.000 km F16
Many reasons, climate cold to hot, age etc
Hi Zeiten, Excellent video! Do you need to disconnect battery before working on valve cover removal? I see some videos performed that. Want to confirm with you. Thanks.
As a general rule yes of course, it’s possible to do without it but be on a safe side and disconnect negative terminal only
Thank you for the reply. By the way, what cleaner did you use to clean up the edge (or the mating surface) of the engine where the valve cover sits on? Thank you.
Gor that just use shop towels, for valve cover you can use any throttle body cleaner (carb cleaner) I usually go with crc but don’t see any difference between any of those
@@Zeiten Got it. Thank you very much for the help.
Anytime😉
Great !!!
what’s the hose called that you said breaks at 13:00
Crankcase vent hose, here is the part number 11 12 7 584 128
I have 2011 BMW X5 it was leaking oil from the valve cover gasket. The mechanic recommended to replace the gasket and he did but after installation he took the car for a test drive and in less that 1.5 km, the engine was damaged and looks like the crank shaft is ceased. Now they trying to get another engine to replace the damaged one. What caused the issue in the first place. I am assuming improper installation. Any idea?
Interesting but there is no correlation between valve cover gasket replacement and engine failure like that. May be they were also doing oil change and simply forgot to fill it up and ran without oil, just a guess
Did they fix it.? pls update what was the cause.
What is the update..? What was the fix and what caused it in the first place.
Update. Oil starvation , forget to add oil . It would be helpful for the community pls update what was done or not done . .
Zeiten, is it necessary to disconnect the negative battery terminal for the E70? An FCP Euro instructional did this for a 3 series N55. Thank you!
If you want to be on a safe side sure disconnect it
@@Zeiten Thank you!
Dang, got a valve-cover servomotor position sensor short or open circuit error. It’s plugged in but something’s up with it.
Check for oil damage
@@Zeiten The connectors look clean. I've got codes 2DD6 (Valvetronic actuator motor position sensor), 28A0 (throttle angle - pressure too high), 2775 (air mass too low), 2BC0/2BEA (Mixture ECU too lean). I'm guessing they're all associated with the valvetronic. I read about a reset procedure but not sure that's necessary just for unplugging the sensor.
Great job, How many hours job is it.
Depends on skill level, for me about 2 hours
Torque spec is 8.5 NM which is 6 foot pounds
Hi, I live in Los Angeles, I'm interested in getting this job done, I'd like to know the estimated for this job, let me know thank you
Excellent. @zeiten.....
I’d say the range is 500$-1200$, for exact quote from us you can reach out through email or call/text easy to find that info online
Are the 2012 x5 n55 reliable ?
Yes and no
@@Zeiten so the n52 2009 2010 are the best ?
Well n52 will give less problems but in general n55 is not that problematic and has more power, i prefer non turbo since I don’t need extra headache fixing my own cars😂
Is this a 3.0?
N55 engine 3.0l, xdrive35i
@@Zeiten thanks
Happy to help👍
saw this video and decided to just pay for it. I paid $1200 for cover and gasket
Those $98 dollar valve, cover on ebay is any good
No, stay away from it those are garbage, look for elring, febi bilstein, uro parts not too bad
@@Zeiten where are you located?
Servicing Los Angeles area
35:50 LoL.
It's 6ft lbs. Or 8.5NM
But honestly a 1 or 2 ft lbs more shouldn't make a difference.
Common sense is always a good metric
Oof, everything is a PITA to do.
Great video. Keep up the good work.
Master mechanic whi doesnt know the difference between a bolt, a nut and a screw
At 44:00 I would like to correct you on something that you don’t even mention at all no disrespect as your a great tech. However I have done 7 PVC replacement jobs by cutting off the top cap with the orange rubber diaphragm sitting under it. What happens is that rubber gives out over time and it gets brittle so it cracks causing a vacuum leak as the pressure is no longer contained by the diaphragm. It’s like any other gasket it has to be replaced at some point. This causes rough idle, and loud whistling/hissing noises. I can 110% guarantee that by changing the PVC part will solve the issue. Mechanics and stealer ships always opt out for the whole valve cover job because of a little rubber part, sad but facts. Happy New Years my brother !
Would your fix work on a 2011 x6 n63 ?
