BMW N55 Squealing Noise Fix DIY

  • In this video I show you what it took to get rid of a squealing sound which is common on N55 BMW engines.
    We attempt replacing the PCV valve with an aftermarket solution and eventually replace the entire valve cover. The PCV fix might work for some people but if you already need to do your valve cover gasket and you're encountering the noise I'd recommend a new valve cover. You can purchase an aftermarket valve cover for under $120, here is a link to the one I purchased:
    www.ebay.com/itm/New-Base-Eng...
    Here is the PCV valve I tried:
    www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07...
    Here is a link to my valve cover gasket DIY:

    Saving the day again! Great content and reasoning on your repairs. I have an E90 N54 (very similar to yours) and an F30 N55 (2014 also) and need to do a valve cover for a diagnosed low pressure (vacuum?) fault along with a few other easier items at the same time. So, looking like a weekend of me cursing at the F30 for a valve cover replacement (gonna use FCPEuro's OEM part though for piece of mind). Hope I don't mess it up too bad! ;)

    Quick note here - It is a good fix however, do not seal the new cap in the groove with sealant. The cap is designed to suck air up around the diaphragm on the inside of the cap. If you place sealer in the small space of the cap - as shown - this blocks the air from being pulled into the diaphragm cavity. Place the sealant on the out side of the lip of the extrusion on the valve cover and then snug the new cap over that. Seal with some aluminum tape until the sealant dries or just leave it on. This way there is an air tight seal on the new cap but not on the interior of the new cap - this allows for the diaphragm to breath...NO squealing.

    Yes, my 328i convertible 2013 has this happen the other day and the dealership wants just over $2,000 to repair it, about $639 for the part alone, and I found a shop that will do it with OEM for $1,083. Not sure if this fix is available for my motor. If it ever happens again I will look into it deeper. But thanks for sharing this anyway. Only BMW could turn a 20-30 dollar part into a $2,000 repair! Like the hall sensor that went out in August, a $25 part, but integrated into the hydraulic ram that raises and lowers the top, so the whole thing had to be replaced at more than $2,000 and towing of $485. My third BMW 328i and the first one with any repairs needed. Any more like this one and I will have to live in the damned thing.

The whole valve cover has vents and air tunnels that get clogged and if not replacing the whole Valve Cover problems will still continue like loud whistling and humming after just replacing the Valve cover gasket only as the whole valve cover with build in CCV should be replaced... • @kishorham
    @kishorham Před 2 lety +3

    I did mine PCV replacement immediately after I drove the car so everything was warm and it was very easy to make a small cut on the side and pull out whole PCV assembly without even tearing it in to pieces. Unfortunately, howling NOISE from the front main seal did NOT go-away. When I started my X5/N55 on idle for about 5 minutes, the noise returned back, while car was ruining and noise was present, I carefully loosen the oil cap and I felt very high vacuum built-up, which was relived by opening Oil Cap and the howling noise was disappeared. After putting back Oil Cap, noise started again. So it is clear that there are many pressure regulating valves/ air ducts in the Oil Cover and some of them may be damaged as well. Before removing faulty PCV, I connected a 1/8 clear rubber tube (30 cm ) and other end slighly dipped in to water cup and I see it sucked water immediately because orange diaphragm of the PCV was broken at many places and also became brittle , after replacing PCV, the water sucking was not observed that means new PCV is not leaking to atmosphere. Noise issue confirmed that there is other pressure regulating hidden valves are faulty and which can not be replaced so my next step is to replace the Valve Cover.

      @wadeconner3200 Před 2 lety

      Thanks for this tip! - My squeal just started today. I put a tube on the PVC cap hole and yes, can move air thru it. Also, the squeal goes away as soon as I pull the oil filler cap off (lots of vacuum and hard to get off) This tells me that the PVC valve itself is not working and there is too much vacuum in the crank case. I'll try the PVC hack first and if that doesn't fix it, I'll buy a new cover. It sucks though as I just replaced the cover due to an oil leak about 5K miles ago!

    This is exactly what's happening with mine. Whenever the car is about to auto-off it starts whining. If I'm quick enough to hit the off button it will stop before shutting off. It sometimes does it while driving down the road. I figured since I have a pretty bad valve cover leak this is going to solve 2 major issues. These cars will keep you busy!
    Next is the rack n' pinon :-|
    Then the flaking display film
    And rear door handles that are gunked up.
    The windshield cowl is starting to crack
    The sunroof fabric and now the headliner is starting to hang

    This is temperary fix since the vents inside the CCV and valve cover also get clogged and messed up. Replace the whole valve cover brand new OEM on ebay for $90 - $130 high quality OE specs! I replaced mine and no more oil leaks, car starts and idles smooth cause no more vacuum pressure leaks from valve cover. Yes its worth every penny!

      @@StillBrokeOff i replaced the entire valve cover about 10 months ago and it fixed it. the pcv went out and there was a really loud sequel and rought idle. are you experiencing this as well? i would recommend doing the whole valve cover as just the pcv replacement may not fix it. if you're taking the whole thing off, might as well replace it !

    Hi there, I replaced a water pump for my f10 535i xDrive 2012 and did the bleeding and everything worked fine, few day later vehicle started overheating, I checked the water pump by activation method and didn't seem that it works! Diagnosed the system and got the code 20A909 ! What can the real reason be for it to stop functioning?

    Your education is really excellent and it solves the problem, but my problem is beyond this and the reason is the place where I live and the country where I live, which has a law similar to the law of the jungle. My compatriots trample my fellow countrymen and cause my country to be embargoed, that's why cars and spare parts and all the things people need are very expensive or rare. He found a valve door in the parking lot and the ability to buy a valve door that costs 500 dollars in my country has disrupted my life and I am slowly getting depressed. 😭

      @@VehicularDIY Hi there , wateched your video , great work man, was wondering if your aftermarket valve cover is still ok , no problems in 2021?
      As we speak I have my 2007 x5 valve cover off and I purchased an after market one , I didnt have your issue , my valve seals were leaking and oil was getting into the spark plug chambers and cause a misfire, so I decided to buy the kit with valve cover and seals from amazon.
      Very inexpensive , I am just a little leary about the durability and how long it will last without cracking etc...
      So I wanted to know if your valve cover is still going good?
      I have never had an issues with after market parts on my BMW so far, but I wanted someone else opinion.
