Note: You may be able to replace just the PCV membrane with an aftermarket one. however in my case, the customer wanted ONLY oem parts and BMW did not offer a repair kit for PCV

I won't use the aftermarket for this part, all the vids and a few people I talked to all said they are trouble, avoid them. The one guy that wanted to use aftermarket said they were fine, but he is also the one that swore to me my car is a 4 cylinder turbo too. :)
My e90 makes the sAme sound so do I have to get the exact same valve cover gasket as you did or is their other suggestions

Dang man after houuurs of searching finally came across a fix that confirmed the same problem I'm having. THANKS! Mine keeps whistling randomly and I see someone who owned it before me (recently bought it) tried siliconing the oil cap to fix it but didn't work. So now I know they knew it was the valve cover but just didn't want to fork over the money. Will try this myself!

Thank God for this video. I have an X3 making the exact same noise. Researched for months on end looking for answers. Service engine light is on and code reader said its a vacuum leak... It all makes sense now

BMW have a recall for several years and models including the X3 for the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (pcv) Valve Heater. Because it is integrated into the valve cover I hope they will replace it with the super expensive version. I am waiting to confirm with a local dealer and will keep you posted. Thanks for this video, mine does it after it warms up.
I'm a mechanic and love you tube. I don't work on a lot of BMWs maybe 2 month. A 2012 bmw came in with that crazy noise. I googled it and found your video. I wouldn't of guessed the valve cover awesome job. Will be replacing the cover tomorrow.

Hey man, a sincere thank you for this video!!! I’ve been suffering from the same issue with my 2011 BMW 328i. Thought it was the pulleys so replaced the crank shaft pulley and tensioner pulley. And the stupid radiator hose broke off while trying to get the fan out. So had to repair that as well. Spend a sh** load of money on replacing these parts and the problem is still there. Next thing I was looking at the AC compressor, because the noise seems to be in the region. But the belt seems to be true and the AC compressors doesn’t seem to be faulty when the pulley is turned freely. Long story short after watching almost every bmw related video on CZcams I came across your video and oh boy this video may just save me whole bunch a money and time. Therefore I wanted to tell you how thankful I am for your video! Again, thanks! 🙏

Brother I'm also happy I found his video mines doing the same thing ans occasionally stops when the noise go for too long. I'm nervous on trying to replace it myself think I may give it a try atleast this video gives me a jump start
maaan, after reading your comment, it was like reading my life the last 2 weeks...exact, exact same troubleshooting pattern.. AND I broke the upper rad hose removing the fan lol... thought it was the A/C also after I changed all the other pulleys and belt... then it started doing it again after 100 kms...stoped the car, immediately removed the belt and then started the car again just for 5 seconds... I had the belt in one hand, the engine started and it started screaming like a mf again... smh lol just found this video after weeks of research.

This video is valuable to me since I am in the process of replacing my eccentric shaft sensor in my 2009 328i. I think the whining was coming from the PCV valve itself, under the round dome on the right rear of the valve cover, thereby reinforcing my decision to replace the cover in addition to the sensor. Removal of the cover bracket from the valve cover is not mentioned in the other videos I have seen and that can create some precious mms ov clearance. Brethren and sistren, it's a tight fit.

On some models covers you can replace the PCV valve separately. It’s not BMW but after market. Saves a lot of $$$

I have an e60 530i which makes a horrible screeching sound until it gets warmed up pretty well. My mechanic says its just an old car thing but im sure theres a fix. Any ideas?

I was just going to replace the Valve cover for my 535i F10 2011 and also just replace the CCV that is prone to fail with it and only cost about $10 plus E600 glue for it but after some have reported that after the CCV replacement, the rough idle sort of went away but its less noticeable and some other's reported that it didn't do a thing and only when they decided to replace the whole Valve Cover which includes the Valve cove gasket with the build in CCV is then when the whole care fixed it's self and the rough idle went completely away, better acceleration and almost silent noise when idling ... I'm sending back the Valve cover gasket that I bought from FCP Euro which I never opened and buying the whole Valve Cover brand new on Ebay for just $103 - $140 which is a better upgrade in material craftsmanship compare to the OEM which cost a fuckable $370 for it! ......Hell to the mothafucken' NO!

Hey man what seller did you go through to get your valve cover replacement? I'm right there with you, why would I pay $400 for one that is bound to not last there's a reason why tjey make aftermarket ones they are just prone to fail lol makes no sense getting the same one.
My 2006 325i makes this same noise after running for about 15-20 minutes, however the 06 valve cover as I was also told was the problem, does not have any valves or ANYTHING in it. Still, I bought for $500 and replaced and still same problem. Curious if the issue is the Crankcase ventilator issue? This is one of the few videos i've seen that actually shows the noise the car makes, which is very helpful if this was my solution. Any advice on this would be great

Good video, thanks! Question: how do you reinstall the metal tubes that the coil packs slide into? Did you leave them in place in the head after you removed the VC and then just reinstall the cover 'on top' of them? Or does one need to install the tubes into the VC itself before installing the cover on the head? Thanks!
They just stay in the head and when you slide the new valve cover into place the seals will slide over top of them. Make sure to put some light grease or oil and lubricate those spark plug tube seals

Happy to hear that helped you out some. I haven't had that problem, but it sounds like maybe you don't have the variable cam timing motor installed properly? Or maybe there is an issue with it? Have you checked all your connections? Did you try clearing out the code and see if it comes right back?
Did you find a solution to this? I not only have the whistle, but also the code suddenly.

great video! I will say !!!DO NOT USE SILICONE!!! That gasket is meant to be a dry fit! Silicone will not prolong leaks from happening and will more likely cause pre-mature failure. Just use the new gasket and cover as intended with zero adhesives or grease to keep it in place, if you take your time and don’t rush it will be fine.
Exactly, dont use silicone. I have replaced my valve cover gasket in 2007 328i twice now and each time I used KY Jelly on top of the valve cover plate to help the gasket slide around when I install.
Is it safe to drive home with a busted valve cover I'm 6 miles away from home and my 328i is making the same sound.

Thanks Steve. Sorry to hear you're still having trouble with it. Honestly I'm not sure off hand. The faulty PCV valve in cover is the only issue I've seen causing a squeal on these. Maybe you got a faulty valve cover? Did you use OEM? Did you check it's not the belt? Goes away when you take the oil cap off?
Yes, goes away if I open the oil cap. Used aftermarket but ECS Tunning reported no problems with it. And I think it’s the OEM manufacturer. Absolutely identical

Hello, I have a F10 N52 ,same engine. It also has the whining noise but when I take the oil cap it suddenly goes away, and this happens after I connect the pcv hose at the back cos it was not connected and smoke was coming out from the valve cover, any help pls?

I have same noise, off and on noise, starting after 10 minutes ish when moving, foot on gas only, ease off gas, and it stops, high or low speed. Could it be save pcv issue, or something else? Please help, thx.
Same problem on my 2013 328i SULEV convertible, but, I see the 2011 had a recall on the PCV valve, which makes me wonder why mine was never subject to the same recall when it has the same problem. One thing these vids never do is give a rough estimate of cost so when confronted with an enormous estimate we can say no thank will talk to other mechanics.
That's because prices vary so dramatically from region to region and depending on what type of mechanic or shop you have do the repair.
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Yes, I know the local dealer in Medford Oregon was charging $115 per hour for labor charges, in Las Vegas they charged $150. So a job the manual said should take 4 hours wat that much more expensive. I have an appointment at a local shop for EuroImports Monday, the man quoted me $1,083 where the dealership was quoting over $2k with tax.
And then you might find a street corner shop to do it for six hundred bucks or less
Your best bet would be finding a guy on Craigslist who is that a BMW Tech and does side work. You might be able to save 50% of the bill and he will still make out great
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Ah well the part is over $600 which is depressing considering it is just a silcone rubber diaphragm in the PCV valve, any other car it would be 25 bucks and you can change it yourself in 15 minutes. The guy doing the job tomorrow is charging 1,083 and that includes the OEM part so not that bad.

From what I have seen it's not "super damaging". I had another customer with a similar noise and he said it was doing it for over 6 months.

Yes. My theory is that the valve cover was not sealing properly so a lot of the crankcase vacuum was being sucked out of the sealing area between the valve cover and head. Or it's quite possible that mevdisturbing the valve cover is what caused the PCV to fail

Hey I have a 2012 528i x-drive and I’m getting a whining/squeaking noise from the engine bay, I also got a drivetrain malfunction message. Do you think the valve cover could also be the cause? And if not do you have any ideas what the problem could be?
Yes it probably is if it sounds the same as the one in this video. But hard to give you any advice without actually seeing the car unfortunately

Hi, I have a 2010 528i that has the same noise but intermittently and it gave me a P0015 code (Vanos solenoid B [exhaust]). After doing some research, and before running into your video, I took out both vanos solenoids, cleaned them, tested them (they actuated), and switch their positions per another reputable guy's CZcams video and the high pitch whining noise still comes and goes. Any ideas? Thanks.

I have that whining noise. Seems to come once engine is fairly heated. the WHINING IS LOUDD...LIKE LOUD AS FK...I mean you can hear it down the block. Absolutely frustrating. Changed oil and filter...went away for like 3 weeks then came back. Changed filter again, came back that night again. Changed oil then flused engine oil this time. Still frigging came back. WTH????

@@raymondrobson9717 Believe it or not, it was the valve cover gasket! The motor would build pressure and eventually it would leak out of the valve cover like it was whistling
Is this a problem that could affect or damage anything if I keep driving? I am gonna be busy for couple of more weeks and I need my car, so I cannot fix it right now. Just wondering if I can drive it for few more weeks without a larger issue (except the noise itself, of course). Thanks!

Yeah it's possible. This thing is so loud, I couldn't even really put my ear in there to try to hear where the noise was coming from because it literally hurt my ears. LOL
It seems to go away when the engine warms up
@@ziklag7676 rubber and plastic shrinks when its cold and expands when it gets hot so if it only squeals at first then its prolly the belt and not an issue but not a bad idea to get it checked at a bmw specialized mechanic

Unfortunately it was in a tough spot to get a camera angle. But yeah basically you have to squeeze those two tabs and it should slide off

If you go to BMW North America and put in your VIN it will give you a list of any outstanding recalls, sign up for updates as the owner so you can stay current.
Why would you put a link for the after market valve cover yet suggest all are bad? Let me guess, you want to be honest but with options.
Yes that's correct. Aftermarket parts are a big price savings so a lot of time the customer goes for that
NoNonsenseKnowHow - Took my 2010 BMW 528i to a mechanic for burning oil smell. The mechanic replaced the valve cover gasket and a week later started making the squealing noise (like in your video). I took it back and they said it was the rear gasket and should take it to BMW for a second opinion. I also have a recall issue so scheduled an appointment with BMW (waiting for an appointment). After finding your video I saw you mention the aftermarket part so I looked at my receipt and saw the part is an aftermarket costing only $85. Do you think the part could be the cause of the noise? Should the aftermarket part be changed even if the mechanic comes back and says there is nothing wrong with the part? I also got a low coolant message when taking it back to the mechanic today, could this be related in any way?
Thevpcv is built into the valve cover probably failed because of him disturbing the valve cover when replacing the gasket. Putting a new valve cover on it or rebuilding the PCV would more than likely take care of the noise. Low coolant light should not be related

There is recall on the PCV Valve heater. Is this a different PCV?
Never heard of a PCV valve heater.
There is a recall for it. The mechanic said he did not see anything wrong with the valve cover and said they think the noise is coming from the rear crankshaft gasket. Taking to BMW on Friday for the recall so will see what BMW says what the problem is with the noise. It sounds exactly like your video though. Thank you for you quick response, appreciate it.

Correct. Yes you can replace just the integrated PCV. I've heard of people having problems short time after doing it that way though. Since a lot of time the aftermarket parts are crummy

@@rwiconcepts4492 Same EXACT IDENTICAL noise. I didn't epoxy the pcv to the valve covers like some suggest. I used oil resistance RTV just in case it ever goes bad again i can just replace the pcv again. It's been nearly a year and I have no issues.

@@rwiconcepts4492 I don't know what year model and engine bimmer you have. Mine is a 2010 528i with N52 engine (6cyl 3.0l). There are different style pcv's depending on year model and engine size. Here are two videos that will give you a general idea if you have the same style pcv. There are many many more with the same whining noise and fix if you dig around a little. The first video shows what has to be done (although it is out of the car). The second video gives you some VERY GOOD ADVICE on applying silicone, how and why. In my car, I did it on the car without removing the valve cover. ***Do this at your own risk*** LOL Make sure to clean and remove any and all plastic pieces and that no debris fall inside. I let my car sit for 24 hours to make sure that the silicone dried and cured properly. Good luck!
