Is There Any Actual Development in Russia or it's Stuck in Time

  • Sanctions against Russia are effective for already 8 years, more and more articles published about how Russia is stuck in time, people, especially in the provincial Russia, have no idea what development is and the Soviet apartments are getting older and older.
Great opportunity that the 21 Century provides is to check many things yourself and that's exactly what I tried to do today. I hope you enjoy this exercise and be sure that, of course, each one of you doing it yourself will get a unique result. But yours :)

Thanks for your really interesting and honest content. I have lived in Russia for around 10 years in 4 different cities, plus visiting Moscow several times, as well as a few other towns, apart from that I spent 2 months living in a Russian village near Tula, it was a nice experience. What I noticed is that most Russian vloggers on the internet always say themselves that outside of Moscow and Petersburg, Russia is not developed and not clean. I think this is absolutely incorrect. For example I liked Kazan more than any other city I been to in Russia, I prefer it over Petersburg while I lived for a while, and Moscow, I spent a few years in Tula as well, and yes Tula isn't the greatest city you might like to live in, but it has its own vibe, and most importantly, it is also developing fast, and a lot of beautiful places are appearing each year. I love Russia and would like to travel and discover it all one day.

If they are being demolished is it happening in a random building by building way or are whole clusters of these blocks being redeveloped at once.

I have lived all my life in Montreal , and trust me when I say that things aren't looking that better when we pay attention to the condition of our roads. Winter is making our roads age very fast and the constant work being done on the infrastructures underneath is only making the problem worst. On the plus side , a fair portion of an old borough south of downtown has been rebuilt with a lot of condo complexes , but I wonder how that area is going to age in comparison to other neighborhoods and other cities.

@@TheAllMightyGodofCod Montreal's housing is somewhere in between Toronto's and Russia's. The Montreal metropolitan area is mostly made up of two categories of homes. Old traditional buildings made with a concrete base , wooden frame and finished with plaster inside and bricks or aluminum panels outside. And newer constructions made up entirely of concrete , with plaster inside and either brick or concrete panels with big windows for the outside. Cost of living in the older buildings is usually under 1000$ per month , while newer constructions cost well over 1500$. We have to take in account that electricity is often not included in the older buildings , and winter being what it is , we can easily pay another 100+$ on average per month for that. On the other hand , condo buildings can have some other benefits included but those always come with an added cost in the form of monthly fees. Which boils down to how much we are earning , and willing to spend on housing. This equation is always changing , but a line is deepening between those two main categories at the moment.

But here in brief what it was: With mostly British support the Russian Empress (“Tsarina”) Catherine II “the Great” (Russian Екатерина Алексеевна Романова), born German princess Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst, expanded the Russian Empire immensely by for example conquering and colonising massive territories along the coasts of the Black and Azov Seas. Other territories were further parts of Siberia, the Far East, Alaska to name a few.
Her reign is known as the “Golden Catherine Period” as it was very prosperous and attracting many foreigners from Europe to make a new life in Russia. During her reign Russia was recognised as one of the great powers of Europe.
Those southern territories (including Crimea) were known as “Novorossiya”, a term likely to be reused today by the new Russian Tsar “Vladimir the Short”. As a very educated person in her time Catherine colonised these territories by inviting mainly willing Germans granting them free choice of faith, free land, non or very low taxation, exemption from military service and other rights. All unseen in European history before, making it a very tempting offer for people neglected those things in their countries of origin.

You would have once seen (under the blur) two women, (one with dyed red hair), and a black man each sporting an AR-15, a Baseball bat, and massive revolver, and maybe an oversized manchette emerging from a barn, watching in a kind of stunned fashion the Google street-view car drive by... yet this "scene" is totally legit. Guessing it was "The Walking Dead" 2nd unit crews prepping up for a scene for the day. But it's also a good area to view the mix of rural suburbia of the USA, where the old and new co-exist.

At 18:40 the white and yellow things you see there in US roads are actually reflectors.. Kinda like on back of a car, truck or even a bike..They are harden but they glow at night..
I use to sit back on google maps and look at other parts of the world.. would dream of walking a road and such.. And i learned something as a truck driver from USA.. It is not necessarily development when you look at things like pavement on roads.. In some cases and many here, it is refurbishment.. Budgeting infrastructure like this is normally done by state and local taxes here.. In many ways we will actually mill up an entire road and lay a new one.. In some we just patch or lay a few more inches of pavement.. And much of this also depends on how much use a road gets, vs things like winter use when big plows comes in and damage them.. And with as much traffic that US has we are constantly having to repair or build new roads.. Mass transit is not as popular here..
i like your channel and much of its content.. Hope you and your family stay healthy and well..

I watched your apartment tour video, and I guess I always assumed that was public housing. Is there a large homeless population? Or is there a lot of housing availability in Russia? I’m the US, there is a huge problem with homelessness and Even the availability of housing.

I don’t know what the statistics are with the homeless and beggars, but for example, now you need to try to find them on the street, maybe at night or at train stations. As a child, I remember seeing a little more of them, this is about 15 years ago. And as for housing: different companies build houses and residential areas every year, well, a lot, in my opinion. Another thing is that the cost of housing is not small, so many new buildings are still not fully occupied. 🤷‍♀️

As long as Russia's economy has this stratification, that is, of a country that has 70% of its income from raw material exports. The image of most of its cities will be that of a developing rather than a developed country. The economy is what pulls everything forward. I think it was really stuck in 1950 before the end of USSR, then it has moved in big cities principally, and the general equipment of the whole thing has moved a bit but not the same in every domaine and some domaine are still not good. And I have seen that some people still think like in 1950.
I have heard that your water distribution is really bad, like you can't even drink the water which is very weird for a modern country (but I have never known that in 56 years, so it's not new), and people don't even have any clue of what mineral water really is. So your water seems to be a big issue.
Some places change faster than others but I don't know places too much in the past unless it was already beautiful then. Montpellier (about 350 000 people) where I live, change very very fast, of course not every areas.
For example I am from Dijon where à spent 24 years, it didn't change that much in 50 years but it already was nice and charming, but still didn't grow up much. Montpellier has changed more in 10 years than Dijon in 50. Some areas have always more than 10 cranes in function constantly (not exactly in the same place of course.)
Since 1998 we have upgraded the airport 3 times, built 4 big lines of Tram and the 5th is in progress. We expended a lot the city, build new areas all around, new stations, a new city hall, new schools, new hospital, new clinics, some buildings are made by big architects from all around the world. In the very center you can't see that much because it's medieval and from early 1900 end 1800 (you don't touch that, it has a style), here the only change are trees, pavement, lights, decorations.
We have internet by fiber up to 2gb/s down, and 600mb/s up. 5G in all the city and metropole area and even further otherwise when it's not 5g it's 4g anywhere else, LED lights in all the city. Good water (but nothing special here it's normal).
About the country we have built a lot of high speed trains lines, up to 320km/h and it goes even in Spain now. Phone cover (mobile) is good, internet good too when we are talking about cities (not lost areas I guess). Occitanie region has a lot of electric chargers for cars and still increasing. You can drink water everywhere on tap (but since always). Lots of roads, highways, trains, bikes, planes.
Here the old places are mostly charming, from the old age, like several centuries... all in stones. A lot of villages didn't change that much but it is the reason why people want to see it. It doesn't give the feeling of something outdated, it gives the feeling of something specials, charming, historical, like in a movie, not something with bad feeling.
We also have some places built in the hurry in the 70th or 60th. Some have been destroyed, some have been upgraded, some not that much, but it's not allowed anymore and it tends to be replaced by better things after a while. But it's not as widespread than in Russia and do not give the same feeling either, those areas are not that bad compared to USSR cities. And I heard that quality built even in newer building is better here.
And most of all, change is not just about changing, it's about how good it's done, and when it's necessary. Some areas need change because they are just awful, some are new, and some don't need change that much because it's already beautiful, those just need to be cared of to keep them good.
