Here's a video on how to tune half a step down, aka Eb tuning, aka D# tuning!
The tuner notes are as follows; Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb.
To do this, you either need a good ear or a chromatic tuner. Learn about Andy's TC electronic tuner here. Plenty of other chromatic tuners are available.
You need to be in Eb tuning to play songs by Guns n Roses among many others! More info in the video

If anyone using GuitarTuna on their phone, tune all strings so they're -13
@Kolbrún Laufey Kjartansdóttir no prob :)
Appreciate that, thanks

Alternatives: put a capo on first fret, tune EADGBE and remove capo.
Or put a capo on fret 2, tune EADGBE and move capo to 1 for halve a step down. If your guitar plays easier with a capo, you can play both tunings with a capo :)
This is what I've been searching for the past few days, its my first time to tune my guitar half step, Thank you sir!
Thank you 👍
Or put your finger on the 1st fret for each string and tune normal.
@@eldesgraciado6690 capo does the same
Holy moley. It's such an obvious solution and yet not one I would have thought of! Well done!
As a beginner Ive been chasing a tutorial on this for ages, yours has made it so simple. Cheers
Thank you Andy for everything you're teaching us, you're such a good teacher and a good person! God bless you, take care 🙏🕊🙏💖🍀☀️
Thanks andy! You've helped me again! Yeah boi whenever i search for an tutorial ive always kept in mind that i will search you Andy Guitar!!
New to guitar thanks for a simple straight forward video on how to do this
Thanks for such a great turorial. One of my fave songs is hole hearted by extreme in eb.
Thank you for explaining this , it can get complicated when you have D sharp = E flat etc . well done mate
I use this tuning a lot - makes pitching a little easier when singing along .
Just done that today and it does make a difference.
This is the best tutor on CZcams, Andy, you’re superb, so easy to follow. 👍
That was so useful thank you so much Andy'
Thank you for this, has helped so much.
Hanks for the explanation Andy. Thought I the chord shapes have to be changed. 👍
thank you Andy good lesson
Alice in Chains tunes half step down too.......do some Jerry Cantrell👌👍
Brian.Allenza Nutshell!!
that's the reason i'm here for this video. i want to play "down in a hole" but can't get the right sound aghh :(
Many Grunge bands do so.
sounds so much more fater great tuning so much better then standard
@@Mike6867 that's the one of most amazing songs ever
That’s what I needed to know. Thanks bro.
At last - straight forward easy method Thank's
Awesome video man, Thank You
This was really helpful!!!!
that was the easiest way to learn tuning down a half step..thank you
Thanks for the info bro.
This is the sort of thing I thought I would never get my head around and why I thought learning music was not for me but hay ho here we go.
Great vid!
Your the man andy
Thank you mate
Helpful hint for beginners, tuning regularly with a capo on the first fret 👍😃
why do my guitar strings smell like pork gravy
Ruger_Ray 412 I know
Ruger_Ray 412 haha....😂
Rosewood
only one thing that’s been toutching them
okay
Could you also do this tuning by putting a kapo on the first freet then just go to standard tunning? I heard this some where and was wondering if that would work
Rename the video to "how to use a chromatic tuner"
Fr💀💀
Thanks man
Thanks!
Thank you.
thank you.
Great video! So if I tune a half step down and play a song that is in standard tuning, it will sound fuller or beefier or just weird?
Thank you
I’m trying to learn little wing and it uses this Eb tuning so yeah.
Please can anyone tell me what it means, have a funny singing key ? for 43 years i have needed to tune everything down 2 frets so normal tuning but in D not E,that way i can sing everyone elses songs and still keep the rifs needed to make the song correct (yes i can play by transposing cords but i lose being able to add the songs riffs) ive just always wonderd why my singing fits to orchestral instruments, but not standard ?
Its easier to play an acoustic guitar for lead lines/ bends aswell when tuned down. For example the bends in Hotel California are easier when strings are looser. Thanks for the video aswell
They are more controllable for sure, gives a different feel on electric also
Hi Andy, Great video.maybe all the chords will sound the same, but quick Question. Would you need to Re learn where your @ on the guitar neck? While playing lead parts over a backing track as an example? Would. pentatonic or Lodin scale still work?
Thanx in advance if u could shine some light on this subject..
Nightmare tuning my electric guitar from standard to E flat tuning. So I use a tuner to do this. When i play it sounds aweful then i go back to my tuner again and it says it's to sharp then i re tune it again get it spot on with tuner play it awful again plug tuner bk in and it says it's out again tryed this several times. Any suggestions plz ?
OMFG Thank you sir i am trying to tune my guitar so long that i require Eb and Eb drop Db
That Eb tuning was one of my favorite but better than E standard because the reason I break a E string due tuning to E standard.
But what are those string gauge in this video?
I have my 12 string tuned this way. Have done for years
So, I keep my guitar tuned down a step then capo back up to E as required. I do get a bit of buzz from the slacker strings but on my parlour guitar, picking country blues sounds all the better for it.
EVH, used this tuning ""On fire and most of the Roth era
Could you do a tutorial for Tangled up in you by staind?
if i want to go between Eb and standard tuning will it mess up my neck relief or should be ok?
just a reminder none of you are alone ! God is with you all and he will never leave you . you are loved and accepted by him and that will never change . God bless you all
would it make sense to set up a guitar for this tuning and when you want standard use a capo?
Yes, Lindsey Troy from Deap Valley does this.
....If your constantly trying to figure out or play songs live , that is definitely true. if you want to play in the same key as the original song. For example Jimi Hendrix greatest hits CD used both standard E (E) and E flat (Eb) tuning.
Hi, I find my guitar sounds a bit weird and out of tune when down tuned 1/2 step, would using heavier gauge strings help? Great tutorial, thanks.
Your not tuning it right it shouldn’t
I love this video..can you teacher me to play basic guitar lessons..?
Is it common to tune your guitar a half step up to better match one's singing voice? Seems very common to tune down half step, but when I tuned up hs, I found my voice resonates much better with the guitar as I sing and it's easier to stay in key.
Hey, strings will sound different, with lower tension. Are there special strings for sale, made for this E flat tuning?
The guitar is just a bit lower. But really, the sparkle or "presence" is gone!
hi how can I tune a guitar in the tuning Eb,Ab,db,Gb,bb,Eb? I have a tuner bergen lt-36,I set it on guitar or chromatic?
Chromatic
You can set the Polytune to Eb tuning (and six others) to make it easier to tune.
is it really easy to tune e flat with this tuners, i also read there is a button that will put in e flat tuning it, Is that correct
Eb is just like standard tuning the only difference is, it sounds heavier than standard..
The main reason I tune down is so I can have heavy strings but still bend them easier since there is less tension on them.
My boys from *SLAYER*
Will it damaged my guitar if tune half step down, currently in standard tuning.
how will open G and Eb sound together?
It just sounds better
Ive been playing for 25 years and I find half step down tuning the best because of the tension. I have a Maton expensive guitar and I made my best to low the tension, guitar action etc but it is not so easy and my technician was also helpless. So I decided to use this tuning to low the tension and play more comfortably. You are not in position like Tommy Emmanuel who has a technicians to addjust everything perfectly for E tuning with acceptable results without buzzing etc...
Saxon also does this!
Can I just hold the second fret while I tune it
sounds really better than standard E
Hello Andy I would like to ask if you are willing can you make a tutorial video for Amazing Grace. Thank you and God bless you.
Can we do this in a tuner app?
Change your video to “My College essay on how to tune your guitar half step”
CAPO on 1st makes is E again... I recommend 13 gauge in this case...
What brand is the tuner?
After thinking about this (and a bit of experimentation) I realized - last night - why I could easily sing along with the recording of a song I was working on (City of New Orleans - performed on piano by Argo Guthry) but not so easily to my guitar accompaniment. I would have found that a lot sooner if I played along with the recordings more often as you recommend. Good advice from you as usual. Thanks tons.
i hope you can help me.. can you tell me what tuning metallicas fade to black has? i heard that it has d standard or eb.. but nothing works. please help me 🙁 thanks
What tuner are you using here?
There's a guy that say an open c tuning is the way to go. But I have played it with the half step. What's happening?
plsss teach us how to play supermarket flowers
Is this called d# tunning also can anyone tell me about this?
Yes, D# and Eb are enharmonic equivalents, meaning they're the same note. We tend to default to calling it Eb tuning, I'm not sure why
Eddie Van Halen used this tuning on most of the early VH records
So I was curious is there a way to get the same sound of capo 4th fret in standard on a guitar that's tuned a halfstep down?
Yes there is. But can I ask: what is this for? A song? If so, which song? Asking because there might be a better way to play what you're after 👌
@@andycrowley well I prefer to play in Eb for most songs but one of my favorite songs is heading south by Zach Bryan but to me when I tune down and capo 4th fret this song doesn't sound close enough it could just be that I'm so used to the original sound I'm not sure.
That helped me a lot.. Thanks.
yeah - now I can start how to play kiss songs 😀
Hendrix and SRV played in eb
About 1/2 of Jimi Hendrix Greatest Hits CD has Eb tuning if I remember correctly. The other is E tuning.
@@stephenfiore9960 Eb tuning works very well for transposing down a half step. Eb standard tuning is less tension than E standard tuning, cause once you release some of that pressure, the strings will last longer, playing them gets easier, and it also makes it easier to sing.
This applies to a 12 String Guitar.
Hello please can I use a guitar acoustic to Learn a bass guitar?
Yes you can, but the bass only has four strings. So you can use the four thickest strings on guitar
Woow thank u, I'm grateful. I will contact again😊
So am I right to say if I use a capo in Eb it would be one down from when I play in standard?
Green Day also plays in Eb, something from them coming up maybe?
Andy Guitar This applies to a 12 String Guitar too cause then the High G & High B at .006 will break less easily.
Recording at concert. Live at Eb to save the vocals.

This tuning is the most popular way to get used to playing the 12 String Guitar cause with a 12 String in E Standard Tuning that is quite a big strain, but when you tune down a half step you'll release some of that tension. So Eb Tuning will reduce the string breakage by quite a significant amount even with a set of 8's. This tuning will also make it easier to sing the high notes.
CircuitsAndStrings 2 Mr Stern thanks was thinking of getting a 12 string, this will help, will definitely try it on a 12,thinking of 12 string Tele style, possible semi hollow, what do you think?
@@angusseletto1511 Awsome ideal for your new semi hollow body 12 string tele and man it'll really get ya into stevie wonder music. Any Guutar with 6 (or more) strings can handle that lower tuning of down a half step cause it reduces the strain on the neck and the singing voice especially if you've been singing for a long time. Even with the lightest gauge of strings (Earnie Ball 8 Gauge 12 String Electric Strings for your 12 String Tele) it'll reduce the string breakage by quite a significant amount. One of many songs that's ideal for Eb Standard Tuning would be Superstition by Stevie Wonder cause it's in Eb Minor and you'd just tune your Guitars down a Half Step to Eb Standard and now you're in E Minor, it also makes playing in Flat keys much more beginner friendly and more in tune. A capo comes in handy and even a zero fret will lower the action even more. The 12 String Electric is easier than a 12 String Acoustic cause it has lighter gauge strings, and a much easier action for the left hand. A semi-hollow body electric is much easier to carry cause it's lighter weight especially for those who have back problems.
@@angusseletto1511 Can you try Stayin Alive (Glee Cast Version) on your 12 String Tele strung with Earnie Ball 8 Gauge 12 String Guitar Strings? Eb Standard will put the music in a much easier key. Stayin Alive is in F Minor, and in Eb Standard now you'll be in a much simpler key that has Fret Dots which is F# Minor. Even with those super tiny Earnie Ball 8 Gauge strings, Eb standard will reduce the strain on your guitar neck and also on your singing voice. Eb Standard is also great if the song is a little too high for you to sing and you wanna go down a half step.
Thanks so much for the detailed information much appreciated and I will try your suggestion when I get this 12 string as I've made up my mind to get it.I will let you know how I go.Very helpful
@@angusseletto1511 This Eb Tuning will make it easier for you to sing as well cause let's say the songs are a bit too high for you to sing and you wanna go down a half step, tune your 12 String Down a Half step and you can now sing and play.
I own 5 Acoustic Guitars.I own 4 U.S.A Stratocasters,& 3 "Strat" style guitars(Souped up Squires). I have been tuning them all 1/2 a step down for 30 years. On an acoustic guitar it's good for singing along so you can hit those high notes, but 1/2 step down on Strats?... It's almost as if they were made to be tuned to E flat. It has so much more life and sustain when I tune down 1/2 a step on all of my Strats.
Everything Music And Guitar Shenanigans I just ordered a 72 thinline telecaster last week, my dream guitar. Have you experimented on a Tele with that tuning at all?
@@holyvacant1427 yes I have, tuning my stratocasters half a step down required me to put heavier strings on them.(.11-.54).... But I can say that a Stratocaster neck is similar to a telecaster neck as far as adjusting the truss rod. If you want to use heavier strings and down tune a half,or even a full step on a Tele,I would Imagine all you would need is to do a "set up" after putting new heavier gauge strings tuned down(you can't use light gauge like .9 through .42 or they'll be flapping in the wind). If you're going to go a half a step down on a telecaster? I would put .10 through .46's on it.(to start out with)It should be fine(remember to do a set-up).in my own opinion personally I think it makes the guitar ring like a bell better, & have a better tone,& if you use the neck pickup mainly on the Tele, you will be surprised how much of a Strat neck pick up type sound you'll get out of the Telecaster..good luck man I hope you enjoy yourself and it works out for you and I truly mean that.✌️😋✌️
@@ziggylayneable Thanks so much for the information. I took a screenshot of your comment so I can save it and refer back to it! much appreciated. good advice about the strings too im playing 9s right now but I think im ready to step up a bit to a heavier gage
sounds so much better the standard tuning
I agree. Heavier, warmer. On acoustic or electric too. So many of the biggest bands ever tune down!
@@andycrowley and has a beginner next year sounds sexy
I think I have a hunch of what's coming in future. Maybe some Guns n Roses stuff.
+Crooked TV Maybe tomorrow! ;)
This is a pet gripe of mine. I have heard a hundred different reasons why e-flat tuning is supposedly beneficial. Personally, I see it as a cultish thing. There is one thing (besides playing with E-flat horn sections and "black-key" keyboard players) it comes to is, "Because Jimi did it!", BUT lo... Jimi was playing in E natural UNTIL he started singing as a front band leader for over a year. His first recordings Hey Joe, and the B-side Stone Free (of the UK single) were standard tuning. All of the Are You Experienced album is standard tuning. But from Axis on, he tuned low... so he could sing more comfortably. Only a bass-player had to adjust. But when he jumped on stage with Clapton and Jack Bruce to jam, you can bet your Marshall he was tuned to standard pitch. If you like the looser feel, use a short-scale guitar or lighter string gauges. Duh.
Sad no mention of Nirvana. I always tune this way . it is because of my love for the sad nirvana sound. Also if you drop d it sounds very much like tool.
Any other fans
Nirvana are gay.

Lol so wat
What brand tuner is that? It looks really cool.
Mike Ness uses this tuning
If anyone using GuitarTuna on their phone, just put a capo on the first fret and tune it in standard tuning. You're welcome! :)
My strings broke how do I do it without breaking them
I'm so scared my E is about to break I'm a beginner I can't do this
