    I was born in Lincoln almost 70 years ago. Lived virtually all my life in Canada. I have fond memories of the castle and cathedral from when I have visited from time to time. The company that made tanks in WWI was called Rustons. My father apprenticed there before joining the RAF bomber command in WW2 as a flight sergeant. There is lots of history both ancient and recent in and around Lincoln, but it's off the beaten path for most tourists...

    I'm so lucky this is on my doorstep....I have 2 daughters ages 9 & 6 and when i say what do you want to do today they simply reply castle and cathedral. Every time I walk in either of them they still amaze me with their beauty and its quite emotional still and I've been in both places numerous times. Great video and thank you

    The opening sequence showing the long Castle wall brings back memories for me. By the postern gate(Little door) there is lots of repair work. In the Middle Ages there was an earthquake and there was a split in the stonework which in the seventies was covered up by shrubbery and climbing plants. On a Friday night after the pubs closed we would climb into the castle run round the walls and climb back down again. Ah the follies of youth!

    I get a kick out of the way Dan's so easily distracted while he's off telling us about one thing, notices something & goes all off that direction, then goes back to the first story! I do that all the time, not exactly while there's bunches of folks all over the world watching me live!!
    -Dan, you're totally killing me how goofy you get about history!! It rocks I'm not the Lone History Weirdo my family's convinced i am!!! Love HistoryHitTV, gotta check podcasts out next up! Thx a bunch for all yr stuff across the board!!!

    Moved here a year ago and love it. Blessed to live in one of the houses he shows. The cathedral is my view - beautiful in early morning sunshine but also when the clouds roll in and it’s lit up against them ❤

      Lincoln is more of a town than a city, the cathedral is the only technicality which changes that. Lincoln has no major road networks, no motorway access or quick links to A1. If they changed the A15 to a motorway connecting the M180 then Lincoln house prices would go up astronomically.

    Thanks mate, Lincoln has always been a favourite of mine since my first ever school visit in the 1960s. To be exact, I always understood that it was the main tower (not the two twins) which had the spire which fell after the earthquake and hence lost it's title of the tallest building after the pyramid.

    The central tower of Lincoln Cathedral still stands. It was the spire on top of it which, before it fell, made this the tallest building in the world.

  • @Paranormalme
    @Paranormalme Před 3 lety

    Lincoln Cathedral did have 3 spires The Central Tower spire is blown down 1548
    A raging storm caused the Central Tower spire to collapse and destroy a large section of the north east transept roof in the process. The West Tower spires are removed 1807. Great Walk Dan. I enjoyed it.

    You failed to mention one of the most distinctive aspects of the battle of Lincoln and that was the amazing woman called Nicolaa De La Haye. Nicolaa was castellan/sheriff of Lincolnshire in 1217 and it was she who doggedly led the defence of Lincoln castle against the forces of prince Louis during the battle of Lincoln. During the battle Nicolaa didn't hide out in the castle basement, she was on the battlements fighting with her men. An amazing woman of her time who is sadly overlooked in this city (no statues, no memorials or plaques). Its a shame that 'historians' also fail to acknowledge Nicolaa's place in the history of this country. For that reason Dan Snow, I mark your little history tour as a B minus - Could do better!

    As you was talking about Operation Typhoon, you missed the hotel across the street to your left. The White Hart Hotel, the very place that the Tank was secretly designed. Too much to see, blink and you miss it.

    That prison building has a unique Chapel with individual spaces so that prisoners could only see the priest and not each other as they had the separate system to keep prisoners apart.
