Lincoln cathedral is the best in the UK, by miles. In the words of John Ruskin - “I have always held and am prepared against all evidence to maintain that the cathedral of Lincoln is out and out the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles and roughly speaking worth any two other cathedrals we have.”

I visited Lincoln Cathedral as a child on a school outing and it has always remained the ultimate religious/historical building - nothing else has ever matched the fascination I hold for it. I still have the guide book I bought over sixty years ago.

Brilliant and fascinating stuff, as always! Fun fact: The central tower of Lincoln Cathedral was (probably) the tallest structure in the world after its spire was completed, surpassing the Great Pyramid of Giza. Sadly, the spire was destroyed in a storm in 1549.

What a glorious mishmash of styles! Normally I don’t particularly care for Anglo-Norman architecture, but the the surrounds on all three doors on the west front are both beautiful and unique. The crazy vaulting is fantastic! I don’t know who came up with that idea, but it’s so unique. The choir stalls contain the most over the top carvings that I’ve ever seen before in the choir of a cathedral. Are there any other cathedrals that have that degree of carving? I’ve noticed that English cathedrals are all unique in architecture and decor compared to European cathedrals which tend to fit a particular pattern in some basic ways such as having a rose window over the west entrance. Why is that? The Angel Chapel reminds me of Victorian architecture and decor in that just about surface is decorated to the hilt.

Just a little breathing space to reflect on the weighty points being made, or the beautiful architecture would make this a definite 10/10. Thank you for the great video!

After spending most of my day studying Jira and foreign languages, I can't say how happy I am to hear about this cathedral, lol. Or about anything that isn't Sprints, project configurations, and burndowns... It was so good, but my mind is gone. 😂😭
Anyway, perhaps it's my diminished capacity, but this place is immediately striking. I love the gradient of colors in the bricks outside, it's so pretty taken together. And I spent some time staring at the awkward portrayal of Adam and Eve... Are they infantilized (i.e. sucking their thumbs)? Why are Eve's breasts shaped like literal balloons? Why is the serpent's head so unfortunately positioned (especially in Adam's case, lol)...? A lot going on there. I'd love to get lost outside again.
The eastern end of the church took me away. Every detail was so lovely. I've never been more motivated to get my passport once and for all, lol.
