- A sombre week for us all at Quinta Fonte da Pipa after Molly found one of our baby goats drowned in a water bucket😭..... Sorry for posting the video late.
I'm not sure what is more upsetting, loosing the goat or watching Molly feel so upset as she cares for them all so much.
We need to fix this as soon as possible to make sure this never happens again.
This means a few more jobs are added to the already huge 'To do' list and
Alex tried to take some time off but ended up hurting himself instead.

As a small goat farmer myself, I understand the responsibility you feel for the wee one. I also understand the precarious positions they put themselves in. You can not be their 24/7 to keep them out of harms way. Y'all are wonderful stewards of your livestock and land. Ouch, Alex. Hope you are mending well.

🐐 sorry for the loss. Now that youve got 1 of those water things could you adapt it to connect it to some guttering? and put the guttering along one wall of the shed at the same height, might save you having to buy more of them and the goats would have the length of the shed to drink from, hope that makes sense 👍

Totally makes sense. Only problem i can see is the goats like to walk on things and along the edge of the barn where i hope to put the water points...they will probably break it, i might have to case it in wood with gaps they can drink from.

@@FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife I have brilliant ideas now and then lol i did think about that, if its plastic the goats might break it or try to nibble on it but what about cement? putting some kind of cast on the existing wall and pour cement along the top and create a gully, it would be stronger if they jump on it. Anyway just a few ideas hopefully you find a solution which works for you and the goats 👍

Alex... so much respect for someone who can take responsibility for a situation and even get things done. I don't think you could have ever guessed that would happen. You have to watch out for goats they are just weird and get up to all kinds of mischief. 🐐I like your determination to do things better in the future. Wishing you a speedy recovery...

@@FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife Hello Alex , that must of been a nasty fall !!! I still ride most everyday to work Wich is just 15 to 20 minutes . Sometimes I go by bicycle when I go out metal detecting , but that just about it , not like I use to do .Since I had a knee injury ,10 years ago , I'm not been able to climb hills ,just plane surface .
Sorry to hear about the baby goat. But sometimes you can't get everything ready in time.
With the new drinking system it won't happen again.
Hopefully Alex is getting better from the bike crash soon.

Hi Alex and family, sorry to hear of the misshap, things happen in farming,don't beat yourselves up over it. Hopefully the cooler weather will be coming and it will be more pleasant. Jasper is a gem of a guy. Glad things are going on along OK. Stay safe,no more jumping on the bike Alex.
Oh no! I am so sorry to hear that you lost the baby goat, I know how much they mean to you Molly. I second someone elses comment, re having a guttering type system for the goats water? Dad is pretty creative and I wonder if he can think up a system that'll work?

Keep your large buckets and add clean bricks and rocks ,you can then adjust the water depth and keep the larger surface area..
Oh by the way Molly your father is not going to grow up so just accept it and do a first aid course..

We still have some more water points to put in but it is a much better situation now.
I was a trained first aider and did several first aid courses years ago, i am ok now thank you, just a small hole which i steri-striped. all healing up well.👍🙂

Eleglide/electrical bikes can be harder to control...in my opinion
I was pushing the bike to it's limits on a very rough track, my fault entirely but then i used to ride mountains and race bikes so i like the speed....... just been reminded i am not 25 any more.. on the mend now thanks Anna🙂

Sorry for your loss but you are doing a great job with what you got looking after the animals and your family as well . As you are a very knowledgeable person why don't you make shift a basket or back pack to use when riding the bike so you can have your hands free, I'm sure you'll come with something in the near future 👌👍. Thanks Hazel, yes it was very sad for Molly as she raised this one by hand, wish i had found it, not Molly but she knows it is part of a farm life, now to make sure it doesn't happen again.

So sad. Poor little bugger. But as you say, these things happen on the farm. Many years ago when I too lived on a dairy farm - Jersey cows, not goats - we noticed at milking one morning that one of the cows, that had a newborn, was not in the queue at milking time, and one thing and another, we let it slide and didn't go looking for her until we noticed she was missing again the next day.
After much searching we found her jammed in the race in the old sorting yards, stuck at the base of the ramp that leads to the 'truck break' (where the truck backs up to to collect the cows for sale at the markets), and it was too narrow for her to turn around. It was the bleating of the calf nearby that drew her to my attention.
Mum stayed with her most of the night, feeding her and making her drink, but she just sort of gave up - apparently Jerseys do this - and we lost her. Mum was so upset. She was her favourite cow, named Pitti-Sing, after the Mikado character. Such a gentle, lovely creature, and a good mother, she didn't deserve that sad end.
But you get over it.
And I can tell you for free, you can be thankful you only lost a small baby goat.
Digging a hole for a full-sized cow is not something you forget doing..!!

Yes sadly part of farm life, My grandad had a large herd of Friesian cows in the UK. It is always sad but we have to learn from it and changes things so it doesnt happen again.

Hi Anna, in the first week or so yes the mums are very attentive. even though we have mums and older babies who will forage and sleep together they seem to become more detached in ways like protecting their kids as they become older..... The mum of this girl has hardly noticed she is gone🙄 but she was a bottle fed baby.
All very sad but we hope we and others can learn from our mistake, more waterers on the way🙂
