  • Living off grid in Central Portugal needs one very important thing to survive, WATER. Long, hot, dry summers and the current changes in the climate which is effecting our environment , making sure you have more than one water source is vital to be self sufficient.
    Running our off grid farm we use around 1,500 litres of water Per day!!

    Aha , I hope a certain someone else watches your video on the rules of covering and sealing wells as every time I try to help him I get told I'm talking nonsense . Me personally have got over 500 meters of river and although small its never yet run dry in the nearly 20 years I've been here plus my local bombeiros take all their water from a well / borehole which is on my land which also feeds two local villages . I will come and meet you someday as your on the same planet as I am and I've been a farmer all my life . On the point of fresh water for animals your right as they won't touch any other water source if they have got access to a natural spring source of water normally where it comes from the ground to the surface and hasn't got warm or gone stagnant

      It was the same for me when we first moved here and took about a year before my brain forgot about how we all use water back home, now any leak or similar is sorted immediately and seen as a huge waste of resources....... Thankfully any local fires so far have been small and put out very quickly, often by Molly's boyfriend now he is a local first responder.

      🤣🤣I do wear a cloth or old t-shirt if it is bad, all that dust is bad for your lungs. I know in England many farmers get 'farmers lung' from breathing in all the dust when cutting hay etc.
      I would go in the fires again, sadly stopping the fire pushing the firemen away is a priority out here, maybe i have become more localised than i realise as that is how the locals behave during fires.
      I have a phone video of me and some friends helping on foot to put out fires in a thick overgrown hillside, we got caught in the thick smoke that choked us all to the point of blacking out and then we all got burned ankles fleeing the flames, that was my first wake up call. My only gripe about living here is the fires but think it is only going to get worse across the globe.
      If those guys dont cut back their trees i wont have any doubts in reporting them, the fire has set me back 5 years and burned many thousands of euros of water pipes fencing etc, plus the emotional stress of being through such a large fire.
      An experience i never want to see again on my farm or for anyone else.
      Have a great week Ruth 🙏🙂

    You are a brave man! If the company dont do their work as they should, report it to authorities. All the info on water will surely help others. What about algae! Ive read it must be removed asap esp for animal water, and what isnt good for animals is not for humans either. Take good care.

      The company are here again cleaning the fire tracks, will be in next weeks video... but they dont come every year but glad they come every few years as that keeps the track clear.
      We don't seem to get an algae problem in our water, i have had the IBC tank on the fire trailer filled with water for about 2-3 months now and is still clear and i dont know why but im not complaining 😂 The goats have an automatic waterer and as they drink the water so quickly it never gets bad and we swill it out everyday anyway just for and straw etc that might have got it in, fresh clean water is really important for farm animals. 👍

    180 liters to do ONE wash? omg... I used 30m3 a year with 4 horses and me and that is with watering the garden, dishwasher, shower, washing the car a couple of times... ended up with about 82 liters per day... way far to go up to your 1500/day sheesh I guess I can get by with less water when I move down there :D
    and if they really want paper... they should look into hemp... it grows faster, producing more papermass per year and is a LOT easier to handle and when it is cut = no fire risk at all

    • @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife
      @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife  Před rokem +3

      The 180 litres is for a top loading machine, ours uses 30 litres.

      @LiLBitsDK Před rokem +2

      @@FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife aye 400L for the goats still leave 1100 :D you irrigiate all 32 acres? not just the garden? (other than the overflow when using the last diesel in the pump)

    • @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife
      @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife  Před rokem +3

      @@LiLBitsDK I dont irrigate the whole farm no, but about 8-10 hectares. The left over 1100L is used in our house, Sandra does about 1-2 washes a day and we shower everyday.... Some days we might use less, it was "ball park" figure.
      We are trying to get across, not having much water on your land and having 3-4 IBC tanks, 1000L, filled from rain fall is not enough, 8 months of the year there is no rain.
      We dont really have a garden, all our land is used for the animals, with the goats we cant have a garden, they will find a way in to eat it all, maybe one day.

      The worst part of these fires is they create their own wind, you can here it rushing past you, it self feeds it's self oxygen increasing the heat and flames the more it burns. another reason why some places we see for sale can not be lived in, fires! 👍

    20:33 I think you guyz should plant Fodder trees for your goats. Lucaena, Acacia, mulberry, apple, pulownia that will cover and provide shave as well as food for your goats.

      We are hoping to plant 2500 trees in Autumn including a few species you mentioned for the goats.
      We tend not to cut anything for the goats, for us right now with mainly only me working the harder jobs on the farm it is easier to take the goats to an area and let them eat what they want and then keep them out of that area for recovery.

      Hi, the law has been in place since 2012.
      as the current owner you will now be responsible for covering the wells, dont forget it is to take the weight of 100 kilos per square meter, so if your well is 2 meters across the lid must hold around 250 - -400 kilos in total.
      not having them covered can leave you open to a large fine.
