    I think it will be a good idea to mark all the hidden walls and trenches like they do in the alps in winter with the roads. Fix a 2,5m pole every 5 to 10 m and paint it red, so you can follow the lines with your eyes. It`s for your safety and i think you find enough eukalyptous poles.

      @@FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife Hey Alex. Truth be told, it was watching you deal with your tractor and learning that you had to pay 50 euros for the manual that did it. I realize that 50 CAD is significantly less than 50 euros, but both involve a 50 and that was good enough for me. Btw, I just remembered that my handle on here is shoesonwires - this is Justus Hayes, the guy from Burnaby with the special needs son, Rowan, who loves watching you on the tractor.

    Your videos show real life on a Portuguese farm and the skills needed. Too many ex-pats think it is Utopia and don't realize the amount of hard work required. Question -- I know the Cork Oaks are protected and have a multitude of regulations attached to them -- one of which is you must get permission to cut them down even if they are dead. I suspect -- post the fire -- you had to wait 1-2 years before a fire damaged Cork Oak was declared dead. How difficult is it to get permission to cut the dead ones down?

    • @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife
      @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife  Před rokem +4

      I see a few channels cutting or pulling down old cork trees and have told them they cant do it, i often get told, it was old so it is fine to do it....... it isnt and you can be banned from your own land for 20 years of caught doing it.
      We waited to see if ours came back to life and glad we did as some have, the rest i need to call a friend who works for the ICNF who will come and give me permission and list what is cut down.... if they are dead it is as easy as a phone call, not worth risking being banned from our own land.

    Good morning Alex, Sandra and Molly!
    Wow on so many levels!
    The enormous amount of land and it’s complex terrain you need to cover, work and clean keeps you very busy!
    Farm life and work never stops.
    The tractor 🚜 sure gives you headaches, but you manage it so well! You have a tremendous capacity and skill to “put it back in good shape”.
    How often do you need to do a cleaning of the land to avoid fires?
    Molly, that birthday burger cake! 😆 Yum, yum!
    What kind of cake was it?
    Hope you guys don’t get more “peeping Toms“. It can be very weary and scary too.
    Hope all is well with you all at the Quinta!
    Hopefully, fires will be at a minimum this year.
    Fingers are crossed for your tree planting project to go forth!

    Alex, glad you were productive while the ladies were on vacation. For somebody who has never lived on farm they simply dont realize how much or how rapidly underbrush can grow to need cutting and clearing. Vital for fire safety in drier warmer climates. The plants species are different but they still grow wherever you live. Impressed you were able to get the tractor up and running for a minimal investment. Hopefully the tractor was not designed by an American engineer. LOL Have some more of your vids to watch...am busy myself in the yard/garden. Randy/GA (USA)

    Have you thought of digging pits across the land to create a sort of composting system where you collect these dry material and shove the whole thing in the pit along with some water so the composting process commence in the pit, and then you can mark the pits so all family members know that its a pit and to avoid it.. Perhaps digging on the sides where there is no possibility of you riding a bike or so.
    Just saying.
    Within 6 months you have high quality compost.

    • @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife
      @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife  Před rokem

      Dry plant matter alone wont compost it needs green plant matter with it. Later i will plough this land which will put most of this in the ground anyway.
      When we clean out our goat barn we have lots of perfect compost almost ready to use, in a week or so we will be using it to start our new vegetable garden.👍

    Does the bicarb help the goats to burp? 🤔 or do they fart the excess gas from eating green grass? I srsly don't know how the bicarb works with them.
    Oo, yeah, that had a more athetic build than a carpe, so I vote it was a black bass, too. Wow, you got a LOT of closely cropped cleaning done! fashion victim, you. Nope, not boring. Fascinating, actually, to see how you approach cleaning varied and so very much terrain. and by yourself! Gee, seems like actual fire encourages eucalyptus to spread 😕. Hope that Portugal, the EU, and Auz can work out how to neutralize eucalyptus and other tinder scrub. I'd be interested in seeing your continued progress cleaning.
    Yay, Marco! Yay, Oli! 🙆🏻‍♀️
    What an excellent cake Molly made for Jose! It's a blessing you and Oli can always help one another out. He and Jana and you Blakes are angels to one another. Whew! bless you for being able to fix your tractor engine! 🌟

    • @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife
      @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife  Před rokem +3

      The Bicarb helps reduce the fermentation in the gut from all the fresh grass and yes often you hear a fart 😂.... it can work well on many animals who naturally can not burp, i have seen goats die in 2-3 hours if not treated.
      Like mastitis once a goat has it they have it for life and no longer any good as a milking goat.
      The carp in this lake are old breads so slim but they normally dont jump so high for flies etc, the was a bass taking a small fish for breakfast i think....... i need to go fishing LOL
      Eucalyptus is a great tree for paper and fire wood but only in certain places, Portugal has allowed it to be planted so heavily it becomes a problem... it actually needs fire to continue to grow and spread, the roots give off something that prevents anything growing around it so it gets all the nutrients and water, clever but invasive.
      Have a wonderful week Ruth🙂🙏

  • @danm339
    @danm339 Před rokem +3

    All these large bodies of water in Portugal i think a carp trips in order soon im guessing most of the barrages are untapped for the carp? And what ideal conditions for them to grow huge. Do you know what local tickets cost?

    • @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife
      @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife  Před rokem +4

      The carp are like common carp but dont grow huge, i have had a few from the lake but return them after a good look , the locals eat them and have yet to try one.
      i have had some large , large mouth bass from there which taste great bbq'd ... there is also barbel in there...... i need a day out on my boat.
      A local ticket is around 8 euros, i think a national on is about 20 euros but covers all Portugal.🙂👍
