This song is actually about the music industry and how they “stroke” the musicians ego to try to manipulate them to get all they can out of them.
Oh come on, quit making stuff up. It's about the same thing as the Divinyls "I Touch Myself" and Cindy Lauper's "She Bop".
@@ckobo84 Your response reminded me of AC/DC's Big Balls.
You're exactly right, its' all about the record companies and how they use musicians own ego against them. Ask any older professional recording artist and they'll tell you it's true.
@@ckobo84 Squire can do a double entendre in a song. The others sadly cannot. It is called talent.
Of course, we as teenagers when this song came out in the early eighties assumed it was about something sexual, but then we had our illusions corrected when we read interviews with him. Still, I know that's how most people still think of the song.
Another winner from Billy Squier! Now you have to check out "In The Dark," "My Kinda Lover" and "Rock Me Tonite." You're working your way through his amazing catalog.
Sadly Rock Me Tonight ended his career
@@glennherron9499 People always say this yet Rock Me Tonight was his biggest US hit at #15 and The Stroke went #17...
@@Will090681 Oh, it is one of my Top 100 songs but the video was the nail!
Omg I totally forgot "my kind of lover" that song is awesome.
@@glennherron9499 Specifically, the music video for,"Rock Me Tonite" ended his career
The whole CD "Don't Say No" is just incredible.
Yes it is!
Saw him on that tour in 1981. Great show!
Agree 100%...
Absolutely!
lp
It’s about record companies screwing over artists. The companies stroke your ego so you don’t look as close as you should at the contract. Some of the lines are how they bleed artists dry and some lines are advice to “keep your contributions by your side” and “keep your eye on top” of what the record company is doing.
One of my favorites for bass and drums but ya, the lyrics say so much about the greed of the record companies. Most people never realized what he was trying to say :)
I always thought it was about self pleasure.
The artist are already egotistical manic narcist. So it's not hard for the companies to do.
@@frightfan85 me too. For real. Im 51 and could have sworn this song was about masturbation. Maybe tgat was just a rumour.
Workin' for MCA (Lynyrd Skynyrd) is another song about the record companies.
Billy Squier was one of the biggest "non-commercial" artists of the '80s
I feel like he is also criminally underrated these days. Until people actually listen to his songs, almost no one in the modern generation seems to have heard of him. Eminem sampled this song but younger people still don't seem to know of him.
Non-commercial? He had 3 albums in a row tbat went at least platinum. He was commercially a great success (at least for 3 years).
It all ended when he shot a video of himself dancing around in his bedroom in a pink shirt. Sad but true.
@@CorePathway And yet, that song is absolute fire. As a 14 year old kid hooked on MTV, I didn't even know it was a big deal or looked at poorly until later in life and the internet. I always loved that video.
J&A, the next Billy song should definitely be "In the Dark". His other biggest hits are "My Kinda Lover", "Emotions in Motion", "Learn How to Live", "Rock Me Tonight", and "Love is the Hero". I also think you would enjoy "Ah, Leah!" and "Love is Like a Rock" by Donnie Iris.
"Learn How to Live" is a great one. Also "She's A Runner."
Definitely "Ah, Lea" and "Love is Like a Rock" by Donnie Iris! I'd like them to do The Raspberries "Go All The Way" too. Love the way that song shifts tempos and styles.
She's a runner is good.. Slower but great
@@jonathangeraldrobinson720 I agree.. I love She's a runner
@@jonathangeraldrobinson720, I was going to suggest She’s a Runner. Such a great, laid back vibe.
'In the Dark' has 5.5 million views for good reason. Hooks and riffs galore in this great Billy Squier banger. Gets my vote for next song!
it is a great song!
5.5 mil is criminally underrated for such a great song. People need to get turned on to Billy Squire. The guy was a huge part of the early 80s, but people seem to have forgotten about him over the decades.
This was early 80's way before the hair bands. This is 70's ROCK working into the 80's. Saw this tour in 1982, it was fantastic.
Not exactly way before, more like just before.
Saw him in '81 as the main act and again in '82 opening for Queen at Madison Square Garden.
@@vernhoke7730 I saw him open for Foreigner in early '82 at the Spectrum in Philly during their 4 tour.
Anyone that grew up in the 80's enjoyed playing Billy's music LOUD. Such a great Jam. Check out "Emotions in Motion", "In the Dark", and "My Kinda Lover". He has a bunch more too.
And yet almost none of his official hits have more than 10 mil views here on CZcams, and even less on other platforms. That's criminal for such a huge talent like Billy. The guy knew how to make the most catchy songs ever in the early 80s, but seems to have been forgotten over the decades. He got lost in the shuffle during the 80s revival recently. Once you hear Billy Squire, you can't help but love the music.
His voice has a tone like a bell ringing out. I feel it in my spine. STROKE!
Billy Squier - My Kind of Lover - Rock me Tonight - In Your Eyes - Learn how to Live - Emotions in Motion (All my Favorites)
You can pick any song off his second album “Don’t Say No” and you will love it. Great album, I’ve been listening to it since 1981.
"Christmas Is The Time To Say I Love You" by Billy is one of my favorite xmas songs!
@@Dave-hb7lx Yes! They should review that one for sure!
Classic MTV staple with a total staff Christmas party feel.
Jingle All the Way is one of my favorite Christmas movies
Billy was my first ever concert when I was in 8th grade. What a way to be introduced to live music. He was awesome! The entire Don’t Say No album is gold from start to finish. Icing on the cake, Def Leppard was the opening act!
I'll bet that was a great show!
My first concert was in early '82 and Billy opened for Foreigner at the Spectrum in Philly...the last night of three sold-out shows in support of their iconic 4 album.
@@hondaphan4172 saw Billy open for Queen at Madison Square Garden in '82.
Saw Billy in concert a couple times back in the early eighties - he put it all out in every show he did ! Amazing artist !!
It felt like this song was on every hour for weeks when it came out. You couldn't turn on the radio without hearing it. With a chorus like Stroke, Stroke, Stroke you know everyone was singing along.
Taking me back to high school! "In the dark", and "My kinda lover" would be to great follow up with .
Yes, My Kinda Lover is a must.
You must be old…
Like me
Same! But I was in middle school when I first heard Billy Squier, and the song was Everybody Wants You.
@@billhowe5921 Yes Sir! Really happy to see a younger generation appreciating the music we grew up with!
I'm glad to see so many younger people discovering what good modern music really is with these reaction videos. The stuff they play today that's new flooding the airwaves and the internet sucks and you younger people know it which is why you are looking into what came in the 50s 60s 70s 80s 90s and early 2000s.
Lyrics:
Now everybody, have you heard, if you're in the game
Then the stroke's the word
Don't take no rhythm,
Don't take no style
Gotta thirst for killin',
Grab your vial uh
Put your right hand out, give a firm handshake
Talk to me about that one big break
Spread your ear pollution, both far and wide
Keep your contributions by your side and
Stroke me, stroke me
Could be a winner boy you move mighty well
Stroke me, stroke me (stroke)
Stroke me, stroke me
You got your number down
Stroke me, stroke me
Say you're a winner but babe, you're just a sinner now
Put your left foot out, keep it all in place
Work your way right into my face
First you try to bet me, you make my backbone slide
When you find you've bled me, slip on by, and
Stroke me, stroke me
Give me the reason this is all night long
Stroke me, stroke me
(Stroke)
Stroke me, stroke me
Get yourself together boy
Stroke me, stroke me
Say you're a winner but man you're just a sinner now
(Stroke, stroke, stroke, stroke, stroke, stroke, stroke)
Better listen now
Said it ain't no joke
Don't let your conscience fail ya'
Just do the stroke
Don't ya' take no chances
Keep your eye on top
Do your fancy dances
You can't stop you just
Stroke me, stroke me
(Stroke, stroke)
Stroke me, stroke me
(Stroke, stroke)
Stroke me, stroke me
(Stroke, stroke)
Stroke me, stroke me
(Stroke) do it
Stroke me, stroke me
(Stroke)
Stroke me, stroke me (keep on)
(Stroke)
Stroke me, stroke me
(Stroke)
Stroke me, stroke me
Say you're a winner but man you're just a sinner now”
We did the electric slide to this song. This was about how the music industry can make a singer or break one. Most people think it is a dirty song but it is not.
This song was a party anthem for young people in the early 80's to get drunk, smoke some weed, hook up and actin' wild.
Billy Squier also has an underrated Christmas Song. "Christmas is the time to say I love you". Love that one!
This was the first video I remember seeing from Billy on MTV! Love this song and how it perfectly describes the music biz.
This song kills in concert. I was fortunate to see him live once. It was a crowd of only about 3 to 4,000 but the participation was energetic from beginning to end. He finished with Everybody Wants You. A fantastic 45 minutes. I 💕 the final lyric - You say you're a winner but man you're just a sinner. That is a classic rock slap in the face to the criticism by critics. Love it when vocalists use brutal honesty.
Funny story... In the late 80's early 90's, I was a competitive bodybuilder. As part of your routine, each competitor needed to do a posing routine accompanied by music of your choice. I used ''The Stroke''. I won that competition but an even greater thrill was seeing the audience rise to their feet & rock out to this song.
My Kind of Lover - Billy Squier
I have a suggestion for you guys. "Children of the Sun" by Billy Thorpe. It's got some elements you both really like: a bit of psychedelic noise, some gritty guitar, and some fun vocals.
"Children of the Sun's" intro is what I used back in the day to see just how good someone's sound system was. Still one of my all time favorite tunes!!!
Oh hell yeah..
Yes...yes...yes!!!!
That one is meant to be played *LOUD*
Yes yes yes...children of the sun!
Billy Squier is amazing - I’ve been listening to him for years. Fantastic artist!
Over the year, you've done a lot of artists and music. But, I promise you, there's still SOOO many more gems for you to uncover. You've scratched the surface. It was THAT good musically, back then. The backdrop of our lives was soo dang cool! 🙌
It's true!
I agree this is a banger. "Rock Me Tonight" "Everybody Wants You" "Lonely Is The Night" "She's A Runner" are all good.
I will never forget when this song came out. Everyone was listen to this. He is awesome.
Emotions in Motion is a MUST Billy Squier listen! But you really can’t go wrong with listening to anything of his!
This song is always best played LOUD! Love it.
Would love to see you check out Benny Mardones, ‘Into The Night’ (1980). The vid is whack but that man’s voice and the song are sooo good!
Benny died years ago already
This song is about record companies stroking ego's of artists.
My Kind of Lover and In the Dark are personal favorites of mine.
Fun fact: at 2:55 in this song (the march section with the snare drum; it’s at 5:10 in this video and continues after the commentary break), you can hear “The Song of the Volga Boatmen,” a traditional Russian work tune first published in the 19th Century & inspired by barge haulers on the Volga River in Russia, in the background, played by what sounds like orchestra strings but is more likely a keyboard synthesizer programmed to sound like a string section.
TOO DAZE GONE - “It takes the morning after, to forget night before”
Another Squier gem.
Once in a while, and album would come along where every...single...song was just awesome. Back in the vinyl days, you'd spin up an album and if it only had a couple of songs you liked, you just had to sit through all the others...but those albums that were just so awesome were gold. This is one of them. In The Dark, Billy Squier.
Check out "In the Dark"!! Holy came out of nowhere back in the eighties, his sounded like nothing else ,at the time..
J & Amber, you'll love his "My Kinda Lover"!!!
This song was THE jam at the roller rink in 1981! We would all do these one-leg high kicks every time the background singers yell "stroke."
I was lucky enough to see Queen in 1982 on their last U.S. tour. Billy Squier was the opening act and people were digging Billy's performance. Billy was at the height of his fame, "The Stroke" being his 2nd biggest hit charting a little below "Rock Me Tonite". Both acts were great and of course Queen were awesome.
What's great about this song is that usually writers clothe sex in innocent sounding wordplay but this song clothes a pretty harsh critique of the music industry in sexual terms. That reversal is so very clever!! Great reaction guys! 🤘Rock On!🤘
Emotions in Motion, I was lucky enough to see him live several times in the 80's!!!!
The band used to open for Queen for their Hot Space tour. Awesome stuff
I'm at the perfect age. Got to experience this song/album and artist as a kid then got to hear it again in my 20s in Adam Sandler's hilarious comedy Billy Madison. Love this song!
Squier's first album was called The Tale of the Tape - before The Stroke and the Don't Say No album. The single from that album was You Should Be High Love. The drums, bass and guitar on the first half of the song were recorded backwards! Billy doesn't get enough credit for his skill and creativity as a producer, imo.
This is THE BILLY SQUIRE song. He’s got a handful of strong songs . This is number 1. His most famous song.
That drum sound was popular in the 80’s. It was created by recording the drums separately and playing it backwards during the mastering.
fun fact: Billy Squier opened for Queen in the early 80's, saw them in Toronto in 1982. also, Freddie sang back up on Billy's song called Love is The Hero.
Nice.
This song makes me feel so lucky I grew up when I did, even tho at times I’m sad about getting older… the memories this brings just sets in stone I’ve lived during the best music of all times. My fav by Billy is def My Kinda Lover! Yes, as a little kid I ran around singing My Kinda lovahhhhhhhhh…. That’s how we rolled.
You guys should react to Billy Squier…
"In The Dark", "My Kinda Lover", "All Night Long", "Don't Say You Love Me", "Love Is the Hero", "She's A Runner", "Eye on You", "The Big Beat", "Rock Me Tonite", "Emotions in Motion"
🎸🤘
Shit, I forgot how many hits he had.
"In The Dark" is my favorite!!!!
Don’t forget he does Love Is the Hero with Freddie Mercury
Best memory is me and my friend hanging out each window of my brothers red Camero driving into a crowded skating rink parking lot with this song blaring! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Billy Squier was huge in the early days of MTV
His videos and music really was hot in the early 80’s
This is arguably Billy's most popular song. I saw him in concert about 20 years ago, and could not wait for him to play this song. When he did "The Stroke" he did it like a ballad with an odd reggae backing music. You could have heard a pin drop in the crowd, and there were even a lot of boos when he finished.
He and Ted Nugent were opening for Kiss. I'm not a big Nugent fan, but the guy puts on a fantastic show. He saved the night for me. I think Billy let a lot of people down, and Kiss put on the worst show that I have ever seen. They were atrocious.
"In the Dark" is the quintessential Billy Squire song. It won't disappoint.
Billy Squier - the most sampled artist of all time
I saw him live in Detroit! The crowd went wild!!
I can only think of four others and they are "In The Dark", "Rock Me Tonight", "My Kind Of Lover" and "Emotions In Motion", Billy Squire is a great, underrated talent, great on the guitar and awesome voice. Thanks for this video reaction!
Y'all really need to check out Billy Thorpe's "Children Of The Sun" and Joe Walsh's "The Confessor"
"Whadda You Want From Me?," "In The Dark," and "My Kinda Lover" should definitely be on that Billy Squire playlist.
Knew you guys would love The Stroke. In The Dark is a mega banger. Can’t wait for y’all to hear it.
Four longer iconic masterpieces that eagerly await your reaction:
Elton John: Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding (11 minutes)
ELO: Roll Over Beethovem (8 minutes)
The Doors: Light My Fire (7 minutes)
Deep Purple: Highway Star (6 minutes)
Billy Squire is the most sampled artist in the history of rock and role! Something about the sound of his drums that they can't get now.
Saw Billy Squier back in the day when they opened up for Foreigner. It was amazing. He brought a group of people up on the stage for the "Stroke" party. Super fun!
BILLY SQUIRE:
"One Good Woman"
"Emotions In Motion"
"Whadda You Want From Me?"
"Learn How To Live"
"She's A Runner"
Basically ALL of his tunes!
You missed a few like my kind of lover Lonely Is the Night
@@koolkitties8552 the opening of lonely is the night. Mmmmm. Love it!!
Whadda you want is SUCH a killer track. Never gets enough airplay
Two great deep cuts : "I Need You" and "In Your Eyes" 👍
In The Dark...
My favorite song of his and the first one I’d heard from him, this song had a big impact on me back in the day! To see a different side of him he also had a reeeally nice rock ballad called “Nobody Knows,” I’d highly recommend that one!
Billy Squier is one of my favorite artist of all time! I grew up listening to him. I love every single song I just love him.
I cannot say tell you in strong enough language how big this song was in my senior year of high school. Listening to it sends me immediately back to riding in cars home from school, playing Euchre in my living room with three friends, doing homework with the radio on... great reaction!
Time to revisit 80s rock with John Parr...fire up "Naughty, Naughty." Catchy rocker.
totally forgot about that one!
In the Dark next, please. Thanks. Love your channel.
The year that this song came out was also the first year that the student body of my high school raised enough money to put a jukebox in the cafeteria. For a solid 3 months, during the entire three-hour lunch period (all three lunch periods for the entire school) this song was blasting in the hall 3 to 5 times. We would be doing like a rocking head-banging move in our seats, yelling STROKE, STROK! While teachers sat around looking like we had lost our minds. Sadly, teachers got the jukebox removed the next year. Thank you for doing this song, it really brought back fond memories
"My Kinda of Lover" ... "Rock Me Tonite" ... Total bangers you two haven't heard yet.
Really fun to see how much you guys enjoyed this!!! I can't remember seeing this video before but this gives me really strong Freddie Mercury vibes with the way Billy Squier's performing in this song!!!❤️❤️❤️
Freddie actually sang back up on some of the tracks on the album. and in the 80's Billy Squier opened for Queen. saw them both in 82.
Is that your real last name? Just asking, 'cause I know someone with that last name.
In The Dark by Billy Squier is his best.... just my opinion but that opening guitar pulls you in immediately! Thank me later!
Completely agree
“In the Dark” has become my favorite as of late. That my friend should be your next Billy Squire reaction.
Billy is one of the MOST sampled artists because of his big drum sound
Brotha, you’re getting into some serious Squier. Great bass line.
Always loved this song!! Banger for sure!!
"All Night Long" is awesome too!
One of my most favorite albums of the early 80s. So many hits from this album.
Love Billy Squire and love this SONG!!!!
You need to try "Emotions In Motion". It has one of the COOLEST bass lines EVER!!!
I had a flashback to roller skating at the local rink on a Friday night with the DJ blasting this. A great choice! I’m glad you liked it!
Billy Squier is one of my favorite artist!!! So Cool!!! So Charismatic like Freddie!!!! Love him!!!
Billy Squire has done so much & plays great guitar! There is so much more in his catalog. In the dark, My kinda lover…
as other may have told you, the video for "Rock me tonight" ,... really ,unfortunately, unfairly, totally crashed his career down to earth, he now discusses it at length and admits it......it really turned off almost all of his fans, you should see it........
Wasn't a deal breaker for me, I could have got past it. But yeah that was the moment Wilma Flitstone started the rumor that "Rock Roll" 🎸 was a "SQUARE", and it was all over.
No! Don't let that video be part of your first impression of the song! It's a good song. The video was the iceberg to Squire's Titanic career.
Yea I think that was a bum rap!
I’m not sure what was worse the entire video concept or Billy’s spastic dancing. I hope they listen to the song itself and give the video a miss.
Glad you found Billy Squier. He was huge in the early 80s. More great songs:
My Kinda Lover
In The Dark
Learn How To Live
Emotions In Motion
She's A Runner
All Night Long
Rock Me Tonite (video ruined his career)
The Big Beat (one of the most influential and sampled songs in early hip-hop)
Next up, and it very well may be your favorite Squire time, try “My Kind Of Lover”. I got caught dancing to it while working!!
Billy Squire has been on so many peoples Rock playlist favorites list since the song dropped back in 1981! This was his first single to chart, reaching No. 17 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It was a bigger hit on rock radio, reaching No. 3 on the Top Tracks chart. It also reached the UK Singles Chart, rising to No. 52. It was also named the 59th best hard rock song of all time by VH1!
Billy Madison anyone?
Knew I'd heard it somewhere
I had the album on cassette tape and played that thing to death. It helped me do my blasted chores and got me down the road many times!
Billy had 3 platinum albums in a row in the early 80's; 8 charting songs and 2 no 1s. In The Dark next for sure, but my personal fave is Emotions in Motion with a really simple but great bass line.
I hope it is live or orginal video, the song is actually about the business. There was a dance to this Amber and even a country line dance too. He did play harmonic.
Billy Squire rocks....My Kinda Lover, Everybody Wants You...check all out. He doesn't disappoint!
almost 2am and this 59 year old is rocking an air guitar like it's going out of fashion!
The Stroke" is a song written and recorded by American rock artist Billy Squier. It was released in 1981 as the debut single from his 3× Platinum album Don't Say No.
This was Squier's first single to chart, reaching No. 17 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It was a bigger hit on rock radio, reaching No. 3 on the Top Tracks chart. It also reached the UK Singles Chart, rising to No. 52. It was named the 59th best hard rock song of all time by VH1.
I saw Billy Squier open for Queen in Portland, Oregon years ago. As much as I love Queen, that particular night, Billy blew them out of the water.
Please react to more Foo Fighters! It's been 4 months since your last reaction and they have 15+ BANGERS. The last GREAT rock band
ALWAYS a favorite of mine! This was a roller skating rink staple way back in the day! Dancing while on our skates! “Everybody wants you” is my second fav of Billys ! I suggest “My Kinda Lover” next! 🙂💕💙
Everybody Wants You is a another great upbeat song from Billy Squier!!! Not to mention In The Dark and My Kinda Lover!!!
