Love me some Billy. "The Stroke" remains my favorite of his just because of one of the catchiest riffs of all time. "In the Dark" is also a banger, as is "Emotions in Motion", "Rock Me Tonite" and "Don't Say You Love Me". So glad you are diving down this rabbit hole! (Also - he had a Christmas song, so write this down for when December rolls around - "Christmas Is the Time To Say I Love You".)

Billy Squier wrote one of my favorite lyrics in this song. "You've got your glory. You've paid for it all. You take your pension in loneliness and alcohol." The steep price of fame. Emptiness. What does it profit a man to gain the whole world only to lose his own soul?

    • @RockPowerUSA
      @RockPowerUSA Před 2 lety +6

I agree and that phrase sums it all up perfectly. As long as you don't keep dipping into alcohol later then you can be immortal like some of the bands out there. Old guys still cranking in out, not on illegal drugs, but regular medical prescription drugs to shake those aging aches off. I am so glad I was born in the 60s listening to songs growing up and now sharing that with our young couple giving us three times a day Play rekindling some of our best memories.

+ it's been far too long since you've reacted to The Police/Sting! Please consider bringing them back on the channel! "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," "Don't Stand So Close To Me," "King Of Pain," "Wrapped Around Your Finger," "Roxanne," "De Do Do Do De Da Da Da," "Message In A Bottle," are fantastic Police songs (their music vids are always a must) and Sting's solo career is amazing, I think Amber will really love his solo music especially: "Brand New Day," "Englishman In New York" and "The Shape Of My Heart" are a great place to start. "I Burn For You" is a personal favorite, his performance in Brimstone And Treacle, the movie the song is in, is so creepy. Sting was originally a teacher as well!

Amber…you are amazingly spot on…and most often with the pieces that don’t jump up at us as readily apparent..you have a real talent for getting to the heart of the matter in every song…
I am really glad that you guys don’t just talk about what the song is about…heck most of us know what it’s about!1…it’s “how it’s about what it’s about “..that matters…and you clearly seem to know that..
further though…it should be said in no small measure just how together, trim and elegant you have become in these few months…you both must be really happy how many changes you have come through in one short year…I mean I can hardly recognize you…possibly given that I started your catalogue of reactions with your earliest ones. This is great to see…and it just keeps getting better…

Although he didn't have the same level of success as some of the other artists of the 1980's, some of his songs are absolute rock anthems in every sense of the word.

Discovered Billy in 82 in college - got a cassette tape for the car, and wore it out. Great driving music. Good, clean (tone),and loud rock.

Hey, Jordan and Amber, now that you'd reacted to this song and " My Kind Of Lover", there's a few more Billy Squire songs that you definitely should react to:
    In The Dark
    The Stroke
    Emotions In Motion
    Rock Me Tonight

My Kinda Lover is very catchy. I've seen him live (in the 80's) he sounds the same as the recorded version. Eye on You is one of my favorites and is not mentioned. I'm also glad you're going down this rabbit hole!

Great underrated song. Since you're on the 80s, I highly recommend The Pretenders. Two songs by them.
Brass in Pocket. '79'. And Middle of the Road '84
Just subscribed so don't know if you already listened to them

l met Billy. I went to see Qween at the Joe in Detroit. Squire was warm up band. Any how after the show l walked over to the Rein Center and was sitting buy the 4th floor rail looking down on the plaza when l heard a voice saying great view. l turnd to this guy in a black Leather jacket pulling out a Marlbro smoke. I asked for one and got. Said thank as he smiled and walked off. The dark eye shadow was the light bulb going off as to who he was. Best concert ever...

I was in my 20s in the '80s, but I didn't discover Billy Squier and develop an appreciate for his music until hearing it played on oldies-classic rock radio in the early 2000s. I must not have listened to stations that played his type of music in the '80s. Now he's one of my favorites from the '80s. Better late than never, I guess.

And thank you for spelling 'Squier' correctly. I mean, it's been misspelled many many times thru the years, but you'd be surprised how many people spell it wrong (Squire) even when it's right there in front of them! Lol. 😉

I love Billy Squier, especially the Don’t Say No album that this song is from. Another band you’ll live is Y&T. You really need to give the people what they want and what you need. Listen to Y&T. Start with Black Tiger, Mean Streak, Rescue Me or Open Fire. The guitars are incredible, the drums are so powerful and Dave Meniketti’s voice will make your ears happy.

Late 70's. It was the song dedicated to me every night at The Skate Place. A friend (a dj) played it to me as a joke. It lived a life of its own. He said he started having 30+ dedications of that song to me nightly. Lol he and I laughed about it. I even made a skate routine to it. High school days were the best.

In this song he's talking about the trappings of fame. At this point he had been a successful music artist for about 7 years so he was well aware, however after the mega success of his prior album (Don't Say No), it really became obvious.
