- Taking notes on books doesn't have to be a laborious or complex process. Just write down what the book makes you think! In this video, I discuss my note-taking workflow for reading books and how Obsidian plays into it.

Thanks Justin! It's really helpful to see the process you are using to keep track of your reading. I'm just starting out with Obsidian and love it so far.
You're so welcome!
I really appreciate you going through this in depth with us - thank you :)
I'm a teacher and feel learning how to learn is so important, so I'm trying to integrate these ideas into my lessons to help students make connections, dive deep into ideas and form their own beliefs.
That's so amazing -- keep it up! Honestly wish I had more teachers thinking like you when I was younger!
You can use "---" above and below the Yaml Frontmatter and it will not create a headline (also Obsidian hides metadata in preview or highlight them differently if "show Frontmatter" is activated in settings):
---
Author: [[Walter Isaacson]]
Type: #book #literature
Topics: [[Einstein]] [[science]] [[creativity]]
---
Good call on that -- I haven't been treating these as frontmatter, just a regular heading. Thanks for the tip though!
The reason I got obsidian was to make overviews/reviews on all forms of entertainment (books, films, shows, games) as it allows me to remember them better
That's an excellent reason to get into it!
I really liked the way you deal with the tags!
Glad you found it helpful Ricardo!
Thanks for the tutorial Justin! I learned a lot as I'm new to obsidian and the Zettlekasten method of note-keeping.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for sharing. I think this might prove helpful for my blog.
Glad it was helpful!
Kindly make a walkthrough/video on PKM!
That was a nice creative use of links I’d not thought of using. If I make a link I almost always make the page. Even without lots in. But you make it and then using it as a pointer to the links and might never put text in page.
Exactly! It's a helpful way to aggregate connections. Plus with the local graph view, you can then see connections through that node, too, and possibly make better links.
That is an interesting way to integrate Obsidian and Zettelkasten.
I am curious about what you do after you put those notes on #todo. Is there any video explaining the process after it?
I want to know the process from rough ideas to permanent notes. Or maybe, as a bonus, you can show how those permanent notes put to use in things you write. I would very much appreciate it!
By the way, thanks a lot for the tips! God bless :)
Check out my most recent livestream -- I do some permanent note crafting there with the #todo notes. You're welcome, too!
After that process, how do you turn this ideas into permanent notes? I love every video of you showing your method related to Zettelkasten! Thanks for sharing!
Check out some of my recent livestreams for some permanent note workflows. I'll look at doing a condensed video though!
This is good. Very useful actually. Thanks a lot and my compliments for doing amazing work on Obsidian. I have couple of questions though: 1) You took notes first in Drafts. Why not take notes directly in Obsidian? Is it because you took notes on the iPhone? 2) What is the significant advantage of hyperlinking the full sentence as opposed to the keyword in a sentence? I am asking because I have been hyperlinking only keywords. Isn't it good to hyperlink only keyword, so that it throws up more linkages in the graph, allowing you to recontextualize stuff? 3) What is the function of #todo? I mean, I understand that you will do something with/to that note later but what exactly is that?
1) Drafts is always available for me. It's an old habit to use it, and it serves me one purpose: capture.
2) You can hyperlink both. Whole sentences for me signifies an atomic thought in the Andy Matuschak-style Evergreen note.
3) #todo simply tells me I need to come back and flesh out a permanent/evergreen note with more thoughts.
@@EffectiveCo Thank you
Thank you for asking the first question. It was exactly what I wanted answered.
Thank you for your sharings!! How can I put the Tag and the filters bellow the tags?
Click and drag the tab to the bottom of the side pane. You can do this with *any* pane in Obsidian.
Great vid just subscribed as struggle with learning. You have plans to make a remnote course?
No plans to cover RemNote right now, but I'm really glad you have found this helpful! Anything else we can help with?
Thanks for the breakdown, Justin!
I wanted to ask what the numbers adjoining the folders were, and how that integrates with Zettelkasten note-taking.
It's merely a way to keep the folders in a specific order in the navigation pane.
Thank you Justin! Quick question, in Drafts, why didn't you add the Author, Tags, separator, and [[Block References]] but waited until you got it into Obsidian? Just curious . . . Also had you been taking the original notes on the iPad, would you have used 1Writer or would you still have used Drafts? Afterward, where does this Literature note get filed? Anyway, thank you for the info. All the best!
Great question -- I generally do these in Obsidian because of the autocomplete. I don't have to think then. Plus I have templates now set up which aids the process. On 1Writer, I seldomly use it to do serious editing in my vault. I primarily use Drafts just because it's an old habit :P
Great video, a small trick I learned: If you use the _ instead of - , you don't get the annoying head issue. Cheers
Great tip!
@@EffectiveCo hello, how to take continuo bullet points on this app? I have to manually type a new ‘-‘ before starting a bullet point
Thx! I am using obsidian for my research but I am still new to it. How did you do different bookmarks for tags, links in the top right corner? And what is a paper plane for, I assume it is for sharing?
You can turn on tagging to get the tag pane. You can also drag panes up there to add a specific note to the tab bar too.
The paper plane is for Obsidian Publish, which allows you to publish some or all of your vault to the web.
@@EffectiveCo thx!
Can someone show me a video of what's next after this, how to properly build a permanent note? Also how does that file structure and MOC work?
I've done a few other videos on the channel around this concept. Check out the playlist: czcams.com/play/PLrI2d6gSaO9BCd8HjgkSY1yd50nyfxYpN.html
