  • The new 2021 Subaru Outback receives minor tweaks after a complete redesign last year. This wagon looks rugged, is comfortable, drives well, plenty big, and can go anywhere you want to go. Check out the outback's interior, exterior, engine options, and hear how it drives.

LOL !! Sure do and Caddys Lincoln’s had one in back, too. I used to play with spring loaded tall ashtrays on pedestals in the doctors waiting area !! Mom chided me "stop, that’s a dirty thing". And later, work cafeteria manufacturing, could cut air with a knife at noon. And bars. Sure don’t miss that and hair stunk for a day after a bar night out.

Love our new Ouback XT - roomy, comfortable, well built and likely as reliable as our previous Subaru’s. The screen takes some time to get used to but after a half hour or so, we were good with it and find it now to be very good. The only real complaint - Subaru needs to incorporate a simple, one touch “hard” button to turn off the terrible stop/start system!

Just bought the Outback Limited (package 34) it is basically the touring without the brown Napa leather. Question - can anyone help me figure something out? On the 2021 loaner I had before buying an Outback...and on the models that I test drove, a picture of the car would pop up in the upper righthand corner of the infotainment center. I really liked it but don’t see it on mine when so turn the car on. I have tried all of the settings but cannot seem to find it. I wouldn’t even think there is a setting for that, but who knows. Can anyone help me? The only think that I have added to the car is Starlink. Wonder if that has something to do with it.

I have the 2020 Outback. Overall it is a very good and capable winter car.
The Infotainment screen is the main thing I dislike about the car. Everything is buried in menus. Auto start stop is the other. The boxer engine is just not well suited for auto start stop.
I like to use Apple car play and turn the auto start stop off. FIVE touches on the screen to do what you could with one to open Apple car play (if there was no auto start stop). I’ve had two family members buy 2021 Subaru’s. I convinced them both to get Foresters instead of the Outback. The ascent is a great choice too, but they didn’t want a big vehicle.

Having a 2020 XT, here are a few comments after 23,000 km of driving (about 14,000 miles for US people). The car is relatively quiet and rides nice. The inside is comfortable and looks luxurious compared to a lot of its competitors. The software and layout are the biggest issues; screen is slow and there are too many submenus. The two biggest complaints on these are the heated seats (we don't need to double up on temp controls, the hard buttons are enough, give us a cycle-one touch for the heated seats instead, please!). The other item is the start/stop, no matter what I cannot get the car to be in "stop" mode for more than about 40 seconds. Most times the car will start in less than 10-15 seconds. It does not matter whether I have driven for two hours and have everything turned off (I am not sucking power to other systems), the car just starts on its own. The Subaru dealer has looked at it and according to them it is fine.
There are also quirks when integrating with Apple Car Play, sometimes it does not always connect and sometimes Apple Car Play takes over the system after a phone call or other phone function. I got a software upgrade which improved things but still far from perfect. There are other smaller quirks that are typical of Subaru; the heated steering wheel only heats 67% of the wheel, the top part does not heat, the manual is hard to decipher and not user friendly, the rear tailgate sensor for hands free opening works sporadically, the lock sensor on the door needs to be rubbed to find the sweet spot to lock the doors and the temperature control is off by about three degrees celsius (5 degrees for Fahrenheit). These little quirks I have learned to live with, you get used to it and so adapt as needed but it would be nice if Subaru worked on them. Honestly if they worked to get one hard button for the start/stop function, made the heated steering wheel heat all the way round and made the heated seats button so that it cycled through the different modes (hi/med/lo) that would be a big leap forward (and not expensive to fix).
Overall I am happy with the car, fixing the last three items that I mention would make this a really great car.

One of the biggest complaints I've read among owners of the 2020 Outback has been the automatic start/stop system. It's been reported to have very rough restarts and the disable setting is buried in an on-screen menu. No good. Subaru should add a physical button to disable that junk. Make it easy for people. So I’m guessing you didn’t drive the 2020? Everything sounds exactly the same as my 2020 outback except for the updated headlights that now turn. I really wish you would’ve shown off a lesser model with the updated CarPlay because the CarPlay takes up the entire screen just like the more expensive built-in navigation. The infotainment system was one of my biggest draws to purchase this car and then the updated CarPlay made it even better after I purchased it.
