Marlene, you've been an outstanding resource for the Lumix G9 and I hope you'll continue with the G9 Mk2. I own the G9 and the 100-400mm lens and have followed all your AF suggestions, some from CZcamsr Matt Granger and, of course, Lumix. Given a little bit of direct sunlight I find the G9 an underrated birding platform, fast enough to even allow me to photograph terns coming out of the water with minnow-size fish and I love the ergonomics. I just photographed the Blue Angels 2023 Homecoming airshow this weekend in Pensacola and pushed the camera pretty hard. Shooting a lot of 20fps bursts the camera did warm up slightly and the battery dropped a couple of bars but the results could only have improved with a high-resolution sensor and a photographer more recently practiced in covering airshows. I think the contrast AF is pretty good, maybe not Nikon Z9 or Sony A1 good, but I was shooting alongside friends with Nikon D850's and the only thing I felt I was missing, mostly, was their full-frame sensor. I didn't miss the weight of their gear. When you get your G9 Mk2 I look forward to your impressions comparing the ergonomics and, after you get the Mk2 dialed in, your hit rate for birds in flight. Thanks for all the work you do on this channel.

Hi Bruce. Great to hear from you again. You've been a very loyal supporter over the years. Thanks for sharing your experiences. For most of the time the G9 AF works great for me too. Skateboarding, portraits, city and landscapes (though I don't do many of those.) It's just my recent passion with birding that has me limited, but mostly in the deep woods. Out in the open with good light I find it works good for me too - but now I want better! I do hope the G9ii works out as I would love to get the best out of any camera and lens combo that I can. I will definitely share my results with everyone. Can't wait to test out the Mkii. Cheers!

@@ImageMaventhe autofocus on the Panasonic cameras is ultimately why we moved back to Canon. It’s awesome 90% of the time but the 10% it didn’t work drove me completely insane. That said we’re still using the various Panasonic cameras for video. I just wish Panasonic would get with the program and use hybrid auto focus like… basically everyone else.

@@ImageMaven It's look like they're finally starting to move away from the pure contrast detection AF to a hybrid system. If you do try the G9 II I'd be really curious to hear how it compares. The G9 has been one of my favourite cameras in terms of overall but also ironically the one I find most frustrating to shoot with because the auto focus system has just let me down too many times.

Hey, Marlene! You've created a wonderful legacy that will guide new users into the world of m43. The G9 is still awesome, and inexpensive. For the cost of a used G9 with 14-140mm and 100-300mm, new users have a kit they can carry anywhere for less than the cost of the G9ii or OM1 body. The G9 and your videos provide a path that will open the world of photography to new users for years to come! BRAVO!!! Take a bow, you deserve it!💯👍

One option for changing focus areas quick. I have mine set up so C1 is set up for birds in flight and C2 is set for perched birds. The customer button on the front under your ring finger is set to toggle C1 and the button under your middle finger is set to toggle C2. Focus area and FPS are set appropriately for each. Easy peasy.

Thanks for your excellent videos on the G9 and Lumix lenses. I too moved to the OM-1 for bird photography recently but with an Olympus 300 f4 with a 1.4 TC and it has been an excellent experience so far. My wife has the Om-1 with the Pano 100-400 V1 and it performs well but a little soft at 800mm compared to the 300. We are keeping our two G9’s because frankly they do everything we need for travel photography. We do have our eye on the G9 II for my wife as she is the videographer in the family but she really hasn’t had the OM-1 long enough to evaluate the video capabilities.

Thanks for all your time & detail over the years. Your videos have been something for me to look forward to. From all that I've gleaned from you & other sources I have a pretty good understanding of the workings of my G9. Like you I'll be getting the Mark 2 by early spring ( I hope ) - after 1 or 2 firmware updates. One of the ' new ' features I'm jazzed over is the G9 II's ability to reassign the ' assigned ' buttons - exposure, ISO, WB & even the red video buttons to other functions ! I've found it practical - for me - to make my G9's front wheel my Exposure Comp - which I often use. On the O G9 this dedicated button can't be reassigned, but on the new G9 II it can - as well as the other 3 top buttons. While I wait for April / May I hope to download the new camera's manual to my computer & familiarize myself with it's new capabilities. By / from your instructive help with your G9 vids I feel the transition to the mk 2 will be smoother. Thanks again.

I have both the G9 and the OM-1. I think the OM-1 is a better camera, but the G9 is far nicer to use. It's easier to set up, you can program whatever you like to most of the dials and buttons, the OM-1 doesn't seem quite as customisable to me (and I miss the rear dial too). But that autofocus on the OM-1 just means it's got to be my main camera for birding, it's just so much better in that respect.

You were one of the few who always pointed out how well the AF on the g9 worked in most situations, if you knew how to use it! I suspect more practice with the OM1 would solve your concerns (e.g.driving a car with the steering wheel on the other side feels strange and then it doesn’t) but look forward to seeing you test a G9ii. Suspect you will love it, or at least what it can do, but there appear (according to some folks who preordered at B&H in US) to be production delays of at least another month or so. And you know what they say ‘to achieve great things you need to move out of your comfort zone’. Makes sense to move on if the tools meet your needs. Always enjoy your advice!

Ha yes, you got me there Gordon. I do love my G100s. I use them so much - more than my G9 these days if I'm honest. I did a baby portrait for a new family member a few weeks ago with the G9 and the 15mm f/1.7 and it was still a joy to use. That old familiar feeling was sure nice. Yes, time to get out of the comfort zone and step up to new challenges. And hopefully the G100ii is the small camera that everyone wants. I'll wait on that one. Thanks for stopping by to chat. Cheers!

    Thank you for this video.
You have made using my G9 easier to use. I think all manufacturers have some engineers write the manual and then it gets translated into your language. Yes, real men don’t read manuals. That being said, they aren’t user friendly. Maybe manufacturers could have the manual written by a photographer or videographer.
That is where you come in. A photographer and videographer. You show us the feature and then how to access that feature. Then how to use the feature. Good job Marlene.
Have the G9 and not upgrading to the Mii. I simply haven’t outgrown the camera. Phase detection would be an upgrade but the DFD is more than adequate for my photographic needs. I only do video clips and the G9 is up to the task at hand for me.
I misplaced my G9 right before a photography workshop. I bought an Olympus EMD1 Mii as a replacement and the 12-40mm pro lens. Then I found the G9 in time for the class. I use the 1 II and love the phase detection autofocus. The IBIS is super. Also love the vibrant colors. I’m not selling my Olympus gear but prefer the Panasonic menus.
You talk about the G9 features. I prefer the smaller Panasonic bodies like the GX9. Many times I can find these features on my GX9 because I’ve watched your G9 videos. Thank you Marlene.
I don’t do skateboarding photography or videographer. I am a street photographer. Once I’ve learned where a feature is hiding I can use it for the kind of images that make my heart sing. There are so many features built into my cameras and I use relatively few of them. The cameras are getting smarter and I am not. I go to the local camera stores for help sometimes. It is easier watching your videos.
Looking forward to your G9 Mii videos when you get your hands on it. Panasonic Canada should take better care of you. For many of us you are a major resource for unlocking the magic baked into our photo machines.

Hello Marty, Great to hear from you again. You make some great points. Cameras are overloaded with things we do not use. But that gives them marketing appeal. Funny how the very high end Leica M series has very few features, but cost 4x more than the average camera.
My second love is street photography. And like you, I use smaller cameras for that - the G100 lately with 15mm or 9mm lens. And I prefer a small camera for holidays too. Carry-on baggage is my preferred mode, unless I'm going on a high-end photo workshop in an exotic locale, then it's the big stuff.
I hear from others in the comments here, that the G9ii is in short supply. So might be awhile yet. That's what happened with the original G9. I got it 5 months after everyone else. But I caught up in time. ;)
Thank you for your kind words. The community here is so kind and supportive. I'm overwhelmed with emotion. Who knew CZcams could do that! All the best, Marlene

Hi Marlene! I'm sure you'll be happy whichever way you go. I'm almost certainly going to get the G9ii when they are easier to come by. I keep being tempted by the S5ii x since there isn't much of a price / size difference in the body, but the lenses are going to keep me on MFT. I don't want to replace the lenses I've got, and if I had to for some reason, I wouldn't want them to be any bigger. For vacations and special events, I think I'd end up just using my phone more often if my setup were any bigger.

I went for the OM-1 along with the Oly 100-400 this summer, shooting puffins in the air(smallish and immensly fast) in Northern Norway, found it to be a marvelous combo. Cropping into birds the size of gnats on the sensor, they are tack sharp to the tune of actually seeing the brisling/sardines in their beaks. Unfortunately, the crop is so hefty that the colours are washing out, but it instilled quite the respect for the combination in me. Also, shortshifted myself in regards of the location but better luck to me for the next time around. 🙂

The interface, controls and menus were just so confusing to me. I’d find something ‘happened’ and I didn’t know what I’d pressed and how to get back. But I need to have it in my hand for a few weeks to see how it affects my shooting especially after a long day of birding. I've never had an issue with focus on my skate photos. That's how I really got to know this camera. It just performed so well. I used it in September at a big skateboarding event and it was still so good at getting the shots. No misses in focus and I shot with the 12fps burst most of the time. But I expect even greater things from the Mkii. And thanks for watching my videos, Sven.

Many thanks for your very helpful G9 videos Marlene, and best wishes for whichever direction you decide to take. I've reached the point with my stills photography where I just need a low weight, small, interchangeable lens, good quality, photocentric camera which makes me want to pick it up and go out and do some 'shutter therapy'. So, I'm sticking with my GX9 and will probably trade in the heavier and larger G9 for an additional prime. Perhaps Panasonic will see the light and realise that there is a market for micro four thirds as it was when introduced, i.e. compact and discrete, but capable of producing great images. IMHO, updating the already large G9 by putting the mkII in a full frame chassis defeats the philosophy of micro four thirds.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  Před 7 měsíci +1

Hi Robert. I'm with you on the smaller camera chassis. I keep my G100 close at hand. I find it's photocentric enough for me, even though it was marketed as a vlogging camera. I also have the GM1 and GM5 cameras, but prefer the G100 as it has more features that I use and also I basically wore out the GM5. I love the G100 with the 15mm prime, though I wouldn't say no to that old 20mm pancake lens as it will definitely be pocketable then. Maybe I can get a good used one. Cheers, and thank you for the kind words.

Grant Robert Davies (GRD) on his channel loves his GX9, good idea sticking with that. All these cameras need is some good glass (even the G100 comes up a treat, pic wise with good glass). I'm not upgrading to more bulk - keeping my Oly em5-M3 for travel, I find my G9 pics too flat - one dimensional and the camera too bulky to travel with. Have kept my legacy canon lenses and now using an R6 M2, not for travel, but for quality pics of my grand kids and my family and local holidays where I can take it in the car and not overseas.

Love your videos Marlene. I certainly have learned a lot from you, even though I don't own a G9. I can imagine how you feel switching to an Olympus or whatever they call themselves now. I have been shooting with Lumix MFT bodies for years and the menus are as comfortable as an old pair of shoes. As for the G9 ii - at $1900 for the body alone it is a difficult purchase for even a MFT lens hoarder like me to justify. It appears to me that the next step is to jump into the full-frame world at some point (a heresy!). Hi Marlene, I was so excited, I thought this was going to be a review for the G9ii. I’ve handled the new model, it feels quality, but for me the grip isn’t as good as the original. Rest assured it doesn’t feel bigger. I do agree the OM-1 feels great, but I dislike the user interface. I had about an hour playing with the G9ii with the Rep on hand to answer any questions. I’m liking the familiar layout, the screen and menu layout is improved. I can get used to the missing top screen, but it’s a shame. I don’t like the new fixed strap lugs, well the one on the right is ok, but the left hand one sticks out at a right angle and I don’t like the look and I think it’ll be easy knock against it, it looks sharp! The good news is it is in stock at my local store 🥳

Hi, Marlene! Thanks for your dedication to the Lumix cameras. Regarding the G9, I would like to say, it is not obsolete yet. Despite 6 years old, it is still a very capable camera that has much to offer. The EVF is great, DFD autofocus is quick and reliable, IBIS is fantastic, the body feels comfortable and secure in the hand, image quality is almost on par with G9M2, ... and much cheaper today. If not in need for the very best MFT camera, then this is a great one. If I did not damaged mine (it survived being overriden by a car - still functioning but not able to focus to infinity with manual lenses), I would not be probably even tempted to buy G9M2. Anyway, G9M2 is really feature packed and definitely a big step up in usability. There are some quirks for sure, but the overall feel and ability to quickly get the picture as you intended it, is just way better. And the OM-1? I tried hard to like it because I used to love Olympus cameras (E-PL1, E-P3, EM-5) but ended up almost hating it. The control wheels are stiff, buttons difficult to press, shutter button hard to find by touch, joystick tough and difficult to move, AF piont jumpy, touch interface weird, on/off lever on fancy but totally impractical position, ... I felt it was getting in my way instead of the opposite. Like driving on left side of the road - an apt comparison indeed. G9 and G9M2, on the other hand, are easy to set up, highly customizable (to a bigger degree than OM-1), easy to use and a joy to take pictures with. I am looking forward to see your future videos!

I tried OM1+pana 100-400mm before. It worked really well with the autofocus. One thing to note is that I would recommend turning the OIS off but only use the IBIS only. In addition, I would use the smallest area and use AFC (not AFC+tracking) for static subjects, especially those birds hidden in the tree branches. Another thing is the subject detection is really easy to get confused by branches so I would set up a button that can quickly turn it off when the bird is behind the branches, only relying on the smallest area AFC and using the dial to move the AF point to the eyes of the birds.

I have both the OM-1 and the G9II and intend to run them in parallel for a time, before deciding whether to keep both. A few OM-1 tips. To switch quickly between focus areas I use the function switch. Position 1 is set to all points (or large area) for birds in flight, and 2 to a much smaller area for perched birds. I also use CAF+M for difficult subjects, as this allows manual focus override just by turning the focus ring when in AF mode. Enable the ‘joystick’ button to scroll between the various focus areas, Don’t use CAF + Tracking with Subject Detection , just use CAF + Subject Detection for best results. I’ve set the two front function buttons to switch on and off Subject Detection and Human Eye Detection respectively. To switch between subjects, hold down the assigned button and turn the back dial. By the way, compared to the OM-1 the G9II feels heavy - it’s about the same weight as my previous camera - Fuji x-H2 APS-C.

@@ImageMaven Your’re welcome. I should have said, to enable the ‘joystick’ go to menu cog and you’ll find ‘Multi Selector Settings’. Here you need to enable Center Button - first of the two operational options, and Direction Key. If you’ve set it correctly, in the menu you’ll see five dots in square brackets for both functions. Now you’ll be able to bring up the focus area by pressing the centre button of the gnarled joystick and use the back or front wheel to scroll between the options. You can also use the centre button to magnify photos you’ve taken. While I think about it, I’ve set the AEL button, which I never use, to magnify. By pressing it twice in shooting mode, when using, say, a single AF point, or when focusing in manual override, the image is instantly magnified. This can make focus confirm that bit easier. I tend to use this for birds in amongst branches. To get out of ‘Magnification Mode’ press the OK button.

Thanks for sharing your experience. The double image stabilization (in lens and in camera) does only work on same brand lenses. So if you buy an OM1 and want a perfect stabilized 100-400 lens, you have to buy the M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm. I can understand the marketing strategy. But sorry, OM Systems, I'll stick to my Panasonic system then. (BTW: I use also one of their great shavers!) And I totally agree with Marlene: An MFT camera the size of a FF camera somehow beats the whole purpose of the system. I'll just wait and keep using my old G9 (and even older GH5).

I have a question having recently gotten my g9. Do you think the G95 is better for vlogging/ CZcams video game content curation, such as that I'm looking to create on my channel? I'm still within the window of being able to swap if I've made a mistake on the matter and was hoping for an expert opinion.

Hi Ben, Hmm that’s a tough call as I haven’t used the G95. And actually I use my little G100 for most of my CZcams videos. I mainly shoot photos with my G9 and sometimes short clips of birds. My best advice would be to talk to other gamers to see how they create their CZcams content. Your choice of lenses may also be important. And of course your audio and microphone. Sorry I couldn’t be more specific but I don’t want to steer you wrong.

Not an expert, but I set up a couple of custom buttons for the different conditions, C1 for clear shots of birds in flight, c2 with a single AF point. The AF is soooo much better than my G9, otherwise I agree with your observations. The G9II sounds fantastic, I'd love to see a GX9 or one of the more compact bodies with the new phase detect af. I really hope you get a g9ii soon to try out. I had a bridge panasonic z82, and stumbled by accident into birding/ photography. . As I got hooked i then upgraded to a bridge sony rx10 iv. The sony takes better pics but the pani was nicer to use. Now I'm thinking of taking the leap to a g9ii with the 100-400, but I'm also considering a canon r7. The sony has given me some lovely shots, and is light weight and easy to carry on hikes, and it's really true that 'the best camera is the one you have with you'. The Sony is so portable, and light, which is really important on long hikes. However I really want more reach and less noise. I will look forward to your thoughts on the g9ii when you do get the opportunity to try it.😊

Hi Marlene, I was at Pro-Camera open house with all the camera reps. My husband asked if I wanted to upgrade to the new lumix from my lumix G9. I was tempted but thought I would wait until I hear from some photographers reviews. Hope you review the new Lumix. Rep told me it has animal eye contact and creates less noise. Told him I wish it showed my focus point in the meta data which the Olympus showed. Members in my photo club are mostly Cannon and Nikon. I switched to Lumix G9 in 2019 because I could no longer handle the weight of the camera and lenses. The downside is that I don’t have much support from other club members.

Hi Kathy, I do plan to review and create some tutorials on the G9ii. Just not sure exactly when. Still waiting to get the camera in my hands. I hear you about the weight of dSLR and FF gear. That's one reason why I switched from my big Canon gear over 10 years ago, plus M43 is much less expensive too. Not to mention the ongoing physiotherapy sessions I would need to carry it around. People keep asking if I'll go FF Lumix, and I am sticking with M43 for that very reason.
Ah yes, the old camera club boys do like to wield their big gear. I feel that way when I'm out shooting birds - they all look down their noses at me. The joke is on them though, as I can get 800mm reach with my 100-400mm and even though they have a FF camera, they still have to crop a lot more than me because not many of them have that kind of focal length. And the cost of my lenses is way less than theirs at that focal length.
Hold your head up high and join Micro Four Nerds facebook group where you will get a lot of support - even from some of those old camera club guys who have also switched to Lumix.

It's taken me a while to get used to the OM-1 after using Panasonic for so long. I think I've gotten it figured out, and I'm doing pretty well with it now. How it handles focusing and adjusting that on-the-fly is so different from Panasonic. It's a bit obtuse when you're used to one and switch to the other. I think Olympus and Panasonic have always just had vastly different approaches. If the G9ii had been out when I got a new camera, I'd probably have gone with it. I wish Panasonic had gotten it out a year earlier. I do like the OM-1, and it gets me good photos, but it still feels a bit foreign to me. I think Panasonic handles user friendliness a bit better. • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  Před 4 měsíci +1

You never said what you need it for, or what your budget is, so I can't really give you an answer. But the G9 is still an excellent camera. If you're a serious birder you might want a camera with Phase Detect AF. The G9 doesn't have that. The G9II does, as does the OM-1 and OM-1 Mk2. But if it's vlogging you need it for you might consider something else. Even something like a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is excellent for content creation. But strictly for photography and maybe some video on the side, the G9 is still awesome. I wouldn't say it the best low budget camera out there because you also need lenses and those can add up. But lenses are a long term investment as they also can be used for more than one camera. And for birding, the long telephoto lenses are quite pricey, unless you stick with the Lumix 100-300mm.

(I own/use both the original G9 and the OM-1) Re. recording video on the OM-1 when in 'photo' mode - the reason the 'video record' button doesn't do that is because (in OMDS's infinite wisdom...) by default in 'photo' mode that button is programmed to control the 'High Res Shot' function. You just need to re-program it to have the 'video record' function in 'photo' mode. See Chapter 6 'Customizing the Camera' (page 208) in the manual for more info. Note that the programable button settings are separate for photo and video modes.
Best way of quickly changing from photo to video mode (instead of using the mode dial) is to set the function of the 'Fn Lever' (on the right of the EVF) to mode 3, then it works as a photo/video mode switch. See page 220 in the manual. As I frequently switch between shooting stills and video, this how I have my OM-1 set up.

Thanks for this info. Since making this video I’m getting more used to the OM1. I changed the red button to video mode as I’m not interested in the high res mode. And I accidentally pressed it so many times the first couple weeks that I had that camera, that I decided to figure out how to change it. And I now have the G9ii to play with for a couple months. Another camera to learn! Cheers.

Wow you've got a great collection there! Thanks for the tip about KEH. There's really no good central place to buy and sell used stuff in Calgary and KEH stops by The Camera Store a few times a year. I have sold stuff to them, but got very little for it, so it was disappointing. But I guess that's the norm for selling used gear. Thanks for watching and sharing.

    Hi Marlene,
My EVF won't switch on automatically when I put my eye or even my hand to it. I've to use the EVF fn3 button to switch between it and the screen
I've gone through the menus on my G9, to see if it's a setting that I turned off by accident but I can't find anything.
    Any ideas?

Off the top of my head I'm wondering if the LVF sensor is blocked or dirty. Did the eyecup shift in front of it? I also looked in the manual under LVF. Page 41 talks about the Eye Sensor. It may or may not have something to do with it. That's all I got. Please, let me know if/when you figure it out!
