    In this video I ride the Lectric XP 3.0 Long Range Edition E-bike to the top of South Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona. I test out the various pedal assist levels as well as Class 2 and Class 3 modes. Towards the second half of the ride we test out the downhill performance of this bike, especially the brakes.

    Thanks, this was helpful. I wondered about battery life vs long, steep climbs. I will have no fears about riding some scenic foothill loops here in the SF South Bay. I remember the Arizona desert fondly from my high school years 1955-1959. The spectacular summer thunderstorms! At 82, I ride an XP 3.0 Step-Through Long Range ebike.

      Lots of great places to ride in the Bay Area. I grew up in Fremont right up on the hills and definitely miss riding around the trails and through the neighborhoods. As you probably know, the Phoenix area is a giant grid system, so straight lines everywhere haha. Have to go up the mountains just to get some curves in the road.
      The thunderstorms are definitely the most exciting part of summer. They usually come out of nowhere. Clear skies, then a couple hours later, the loudest thunder imaginable, gale force winds, and crazy rain.

    • @AnandaGarden
      @AnandaGarden Před 4 měsíci +1

      Oh, yes. When I was younger and still running ultramarathons I often thought how wonderful it would be to do a race in southern Arizona. Never got the chance. But I remember in high school how we would be swimming and tanning at the municipal pool, and on the walk home the clouds would quickly gather, the rain would come down in heavy sheets, and soon the water would be flowing 4 inches deep from curb to curb with violent lightning strikes everywhere. Wow.

    Regenerative braking would add so much cost and weight that it's not worth it, except for a niche customer. Most of us are fine with the range.

I attach the camera to a chest mount that fits most GoPro cameras. I also attach an external microphone with a wind guard so you can hear my voice and not the wind rushing by. I used to hold over 600 acres of Placer and Lode claims in Arizona. Not that you would get rich and my claims all now vacated. But finding color can be fun. Anyone wants to try I will try to guide them to locations. I live in Costa Rica and have more rewarding things to do. All free though. Consider also old condensed milk cans in mining areas. There is a silver button on the bottom and manufactured that way until the early 1970's. Made more from that than gold,
      Don't forget Fat Man's Squeeze in South Mountain Park. goes to a semi tropical little canyon.

    I grew up in Phoenix in the 1950's and 60's and remember when the population reached 250,000. I would take a one speed bike up South Mountain as well as ride to Cave Creek and back. In my teens ride a 10 speed bike to Flagstaff and back the following day. They used to have a parrot at South Mountain Park Entrance. It swore like a Pirate and especially at women. Got so many complaints they had to remove it from Welcoming people.
    Well about to turn 76, I am still biking. As recently as 4 years ago mountain biking in the Andes of Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia walking the bike uphill at altitudes over 16,000 ft. You expect me to peddle? No Way not in that thin air. And sometimes just 10 feet or so at a time.
    I now live in Costa Rica. We have many roads of 30 to 35% incline. And know of one at 41%. I have a 1200 watt e-scooter made by RAM which can do 71 KPH top and on a 21% grade 38 KPH unassisted. I also have a 110 cc 2 stroke moped. I am having a utility/camp trailer built that can be towed by either. IThe e-scooter runs on a 72 volt 40 AH battery. The builder was hesitant of cost. Turns out it will cost $115 to build. In the US I bet it would cost me $2500 as it has removable hard sides and roof making it secure and dry in the rain. I keep mountain bikes in Nicaragua, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Not easy to travel with a bike on airplanes Internationally.
    I live at an elevation of 6740 ft. Pine trees and Cedar grow here along with tropical plants. And not too far away in Cerro Chirripo at 12,536 feet. just under 100 feet short of Arizona's Mt Humphries..
    Governor Ernest McFarland was my great uncle. Two term Governor of Arizona, one term US Senator defeated by Barry Goldwater. But not down for the count, he then became Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court.
    Glad to see some roads closed to motorized vehicles. Should be more. Over the years cars travel so much faster and drivers far more aggressive, at least in the US.

    Except for Intercontinental Highways #1 and #2 posted speeds here in Costa Rica are no more than 60 KPH and mostly 40 KPH. Those other 2 highways are 80 KPH and nothing allowed less than 60. Most drivers here are doing 10 to 15 KPH below posted limit. and for good reason. Should mention as I do not have Costa Rica Residency I cannot obtain a driver's license. So e-bikes and mopeds being exempt are my best option.

      @@tomsgadgetgarage no. The point of my post is that 55nm of torque is not a lot and with other e-bikes i have owned i could remain in the same gear and pa WITHOUT losing speed. • @tomsgadgetgarage
      @tomsgadgetgarage  Před 3 dny

      Gotcha. Yah for sustained riding in the same PAS level more power and torque are needed on steeper slopes. I recall needing to go up to 5 on the XP in the hill climb video. Hi Jack, I’m assuming you’re referring to the part of the video where I mention testing out the brakes on the way down the mountain? If so, the good news is that I used them several times when approaching some of the tight curves in the road and I’m happy to report back that the brakes on this bike are excellent. At no point during the descent did I have any issues slowing down. Great stopping power. I do have the version of the bike with hydraulic brakes, and it’s my understanding that some of the earlier versions of the 3.0 had mechanical brakes.
      In my “How does it ride” video I do test out the brakes a couple times on flat ground from around 20mph and also found they perform very well. One thing I’ll call out out is that if you pull the brakes abruptly all the way, the wheels may lock up.

    This bike struggles a bit on the hills of the PNW. I might add an additional 250w motor on the front just for hill torque.
    I wish our bike laws were regulated by speed rather than power in the bike...the car lobbyists have destabilized everything having to do with bikes.

      @tomsgadgetgarage  Před 7 měsíci +1

      That’s good to know. I visited the Portland area about 13 years ago and drove a rental car around some of the neighborhoods on the hillsides. Those hills are ridiculously steep. What makes them worse is they were wet the entire week I was there haha.

    If you ever need a quick measurement, we hope this small ruler will help you out. Even more than that, we hope this card will show how you "measure up" using the most important standard. Read the other side to see if you meet that standard.
    You may not have realized it, but each of us will be “measured” by a standard when we die: the Ten Commandments. How do you "measure up?" Ever lied or stolen (regardless of the value)? Ever looked with lust, committing adultery in your heart? (see Matthew 5:28) The Bible even says that hatred is the same as murder (1 John 3:15). Ever been guilty of that? God gave us this standard to show us how far we fall short. HOWEVER, God sent his Son, Jesus to this earth. He lived a perfect life and gave himself up on a cross to pay for our sins. Then he rose from the dead! God commands you to repent and put your faith in Christ. Stop striving to “earn” heaven, and realize your total inability to meet God's standard. Trust in what Christ did to save you. Read your Bible every day and obey what you read.
