- The year was 669 AD and Constantine IV was in power since the sudden death of his father in Sicily a year before. After having quelled the usurpation of Mezezius, the troops located there returned to Anatolia. The Arabs took advantage of this fact to pillage the Island again.

This channel definitely deserves to have more attention and subscribers.
Never knew the Arabs had managed to set up bases so close to the imperial capital. Great work!
You’re in for a rude awakening in 717 😂
you deserve so much more attention, your videos are so high quality and in depth while covering interesting historical niches.
I agree.
Dude you rock ! Most people stop doing videos after 476 but you still keep going , on top of that the graphics and animations are very detailed and pleasing to look at and with your detailed story telling I always learn some new , truly well done . You are definitely one of my favourite underrated creators
Thanks for your kind words !
I'm so glad you made the change to zoom the map out more at the beginning and the end. We can see in more detail what happened and what changed since the start of the video and it complements with your recap at the end too.
You requested, I answered
You deserve more views, very good quality content about an era that is often overlooked
You make some of the best History videos
I love your videos
Your channel is so underrated
Man I really love your channel. Most channels focus just in the military affairs and battles but you provide a wider picture of the events. I like that.
Awesome, incredible vid
Awesome video very well made thank you
I know most of these battles aren’t really very well documented but I actually really liked your simple battle design for the theodosius video and Rome against atilla I hope you bring it back once we get to more documented battles
These videos are more about general narratives of various states in history. I avoid diving to deep into the military side of things. But I will consider it.
Love this channel, the best maps on CZcams without a doubt
I’ve loved your videos since the beginning, looking forward to seeing you get as big as some of the other history channels
Great episode as always! Thank you for your great insights.
Brilliant as always! Thank you! I wait your videos like good movies)

Great video!
Please keep making these videos, I am a fan of your channel. BBBB :)
I recommend the Peter Crawford book if anyone wants to read about Justinian II. Great video man.
Awesome channel!
Constantine the IV was a bad ass
Yes, he is very underrated.
Everybody loves to look at the crisis of the 3rd century as the lowest point. Theses were the true bad days of the Romans. People wonder how Rome survived that crisis, look at Constantinople and Rome in the empire at this time. There were actually a lot of atemps in the western lands of userper leaders of Italia militia technically part of the Roman army tryed and of course some userpers appointed to Ravenna who revolted against the Emperor or Papal issues. Seriously bad bad times
How fascinating. I'd never even heard of the Mardaitai.
Wonderful video
Niche Byzantine history let's go!!!
Good video
Everyone always say Justinian II is one of the worst to ever do it and yet he did pretty well, at least for the first reign. The first few years was pretty good until the Slavs defected in that battle. It makes you wonder what would happen if they didn't. No 20 year anarchy? Would he continue the momentum and liberate Antioch 3 centuries earlier? Maybe those Syrian Christians could help him liberate Syria and the Caliphate never truly consolidates.
The problem with Justinian II is his second reign.
The first reign was still okay, but his reaction towards the families of the slavs of Anatolia when the army deserted to the Arabs was a signal that he wasn’t mentally stable.
It also said that Justinian II abolished office of Consul something that make Byzantine seperate from it's Roman origins
@@hiskakun2276When you are the strongest man in Europe and possibly the world it's hard not to be brutal
Splendid video, which sources did you use on the naval engagements between the Romans and Umayyads in the Levant? Especially this one at 11:18
Glad to see you here again,
you can find all my sources in the description but here are those which specificaly mention naval engagements :
Modern books :
> John Haldon, The Empire That Would Not Die: Harvard; 2016 (mentions imperial fleet raiding palestine)

@@ancientsight My thanks! I also wonder what's with the French wikipedia pages being so much more informative than the English one? They have more sources and are better structured (for the most part, at least about certain topics). Like, the English page about Leo IV the Khazar has only a few paragraphs, while the French page is a compilation of every available source, medieval and modern, about the Emperor, mentions everything from internal policies to wars and foreign relations. The French wiki about Alexios I Komnenos is also a gem that could pass as a biography.
Yes that's confusing for sure. I cannot say I know why it is the case. Perhaps the most hardcore fans of byzantium among wikipedia editors happen to be french. The detailed articles about Komnenian emperors may have something to do with the crusades, a part of french history. But that's pure speculation.
If only constantine the 4th had not died of dysentery.
Lets go!
Will the next video be a standalone episode or a continuation of the Byzantine series?
Standalone on the Ostrogoths
Please do Bulgaria.
bro we are waiting the next part
I know that very well no worries. I am currently working on the next videos
I can't wait to see it!
Question: Will this focused mainly for the relations between the Romans, the Arabs, the Slavs and the Bulgarians for the time being or the Conquest of Hispania will be featured as well?
This series of video is about the history of the roman state. Thus there will not be not much details about the conquest of Hispania by the caliphate
@@ancientsight And will you go beyond the year of 1453 as well? After all, both Russia and the Ottoman Empire claimed to be the continuation of the Old Roman Empire as well.
@@lerneanlionclaimed but weren’t actually the Roman Empire he is covering the Roman Empire
Those borders hurt
Same without Syria and Egypt, largest Population in Europe, strongest and biggest army in Europe while they earn victories in every front against formidable enemies and you're sad😂
17:18 where is that picture from?
Here is where I found it : fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichier:Sednaya_Mary.jpg
Although I think it's supposed to portray the first Justinian.

When will justinian return?
If the next video covers the 20 years anarchy (or 22 years) Justinian II will be there again. He returned in 705.
The guy was the real joker of this world. What he did in the hypodrome was a masterclass that even joker would have been jealous. He returned only with one reason in mind. Kill everyone and destroy everything

Justinian 2nd from 685 to 690 😀😊 restore Armenia Antioch part of Cyprus and have libya and north Africa Justinian 695 lost Antioch calicia and north Africa is about to be invaded libya was lost 😢 it could have been greatest come back ever ;(
Ps : losing Africa was the end of eastern roman empire to the Byzantine empire it lost all hope to be powerful as Justinian days also it was the gate of eroupe
that ps part makes no sense the empire still had stuff in Italy and the Mediterranean islands
@@barrett206 north Africa was very important had they kept it libya and Egypt could have been retaking
@@barrett206 also after north Africa fell in 709 lets how spain held ? 😂
@@rickyyacine4818 just berceuse north africa fell doesnt mean the eastern romans turned into the "Byzantine" it was just another loss of territory, there is no such thing as the "Byzantine" empire only the roman empire
@@barrett206 jokes a side as empire the fall of north Africa completely changed everything meaning that the Byzantine lost any major comback on long run and it kept on the defensive from 717 to 960s the moment the Byzantine got stronger again it failed so fast after that in 1071
nice. I read a historical fiction on this Justinian II. Awful guy
