    As someone who bleeds Black & Gold, my thoughts on this team have been consistent from the start of the season. I didn't think they'd slip back as far as so many were saying, but I did believe they had a ceiling which wouldn't produce a Stanley Cup. I had them finishing in the 2nd or 3rd spot in the Atlantic and I consistently felt this team had one playoff series win in them. I had Panthers in 6. They hit their ceiling.
    I'd prefer to be happy over right however.
    The important piece to remember is that this was never going to be a Stanley Cup year for Boston. This was a year of retooling the roster, managing a very difficult salary cap situation and introducing a number of rookies to the NHL roster. Along with 109 points and a playoff series win against the Maple Leafs, the Bruins saw amazing growth from players like Beecher, Lohrei, Poitras, and Brazeau. The defensive additions of Peeke and Wotherspoon look very promising. And of course, we all learned that the Bruins have a premier #1 goaltender that can handle playoff pressures in Swayman. There's a lot to be excited about going into 2024-2025 for the B's. And don't forget that the salary cap moves up next year. Say what you want to about ownership and some of the moves by Sweeney over the years...but ownership always spends to the cap and Sweeney, even when he misses, is typically aggressive in the free agency marketplace.

    You pretty much nailed it. Panthers were just a better team this year. I not disappointed in the B’s play this year. They made the best of what they had. Next year should be better.
    Young players did get to play and gained some good experience. That being said 7 to many men on the ice was ridiculous. Monty needs to address that.

      @@DarthLetalis Vancouver has some tough decisions to make with their pending FAs this offseason. It's certainly possible that Lindholm re-signs here, and I think the team is more likely to give him an offer he'll be willing to accept with his performance in the playoffs so far, but Zadorov, Hronek, and Joshua are also due for substantial raises. Also, if they want to keep Boeser when his contract expires at the end of 24-25, they will have to avoid spending right up to the cap, as the OEL buyout penalty increases by nearly 2.5 million for 25-26.
      What I would say is that if you don't see something happen with Mikheyev's contract or Hronek's RFA rights, there's a much higher chance of Lindholm going to market, as those are the two big variables I can see that would impact Vancouver's ability to keep him.

    It hurts me knowing that we've likely seen the end of the Goalie Hugs. I wasn't hot on Ullmark when we signed him, but he proved me wrong so quickly and I'm happy he did. It really is a shame we likely wont keep him. With the amount of cap space we have there, there is no reason the Bruins can't go out and get a pair of true top-pairing centres and another winger to fill out the top lines again. Names that immediately come to mind (despite needing offer sheets which the Bruins are limited in) are Necas and Jarvis. There's a lot of people talking about Drai and Ullmark being trade pieces, which would be awesome, but that's kinda hard to see happening, lol

I was not optimistic about beating the Panthers, but it was frustrating just how spectacularly inept they made the Bruins look at times, when the Bruins simply could not clear the puck from their zone or enter the offensive zone with possession. Completing a pass in the neutral zone was nearly as challenging. It was as if the Panthers were playing "Dead Puck Era" trap hockey, without the clutching and grabbing. The Bruins had no answers. Only Swayman made the series as close as it was. I'm curious if the Rangers can do better.

They have $20 plus million in salary cap space. Yeah Swayman is probably going to get 6 million or so, but they are going to trade ullmark. They’ve already tried and it’s only a matter of time before he gets traded. There are some really decent players and free agency. I think they need a top four defenseman and multiple top six forwards they can do that because of the money they have. There are some real decent players in free agency they could get that could help them with this team.

    Seems like everyone gave Monty a pass this year. Maybe he could have done better. As far as the too many men penalties go...when the veterans play like rookies, coach them like rookies. Do some line change drills. The Bruins answer for Offense is always "line change". It didn't work for Julien. It didn't work for Cassidy. Its not working for Montgomery. When the opponent takes out your top scorer, you need a PlanB. Where was Monty's PlanB?

    I don't understand the thought held by some hockey experts that Ullmark OBVIOUSLY must be traded. No one ever explains why, as far as I'm concerned. I find it puzzling how little of their salary cap teams devote to goaltending. Isn't it the most important position? Suppose Swayman earns $9 million next season and the Bruins keep Ullmark at $5 million. That would mean 16% of the salary cap is spent on goaltending, which seems reasonable to me. I think I would trade Ullmark only for a talented young center.

    • @HHSGDFootballJPD
      @HHSGDFootballJPD Před 21 dnem

      1) About the only other thing Swayman could do this playoff run to improve his performance was skate the puck to the top of the circle and try to score from 140 ft.
      2) Goaltending is important, but sometimes it just comes down to riding the hot goalie (like VAN vs EDM or Aidan Hill last year).

  • @Cableguy15
    @Cableguy15 Před 21 dnem

    On the topic of the point difference between Pastrnak and the next closest player this season, I don't think that's the issue. Last year, the supposed super team had a very similar gap between Pastrnak and the next closest player, Marchand. 113 pts - 67 pts. The difference is, there are 7 other guys in the 50-70 pt range on that roster as opposed to this season at 4. Anyway, the B's strategy with Pastrnak is a little obvious at this point. Teams know to guard the Ovechkin dot and that's where he scores a lot of his goals. Another part of the problem is that a lot of his teammates would rather make an unrealistic pass to him than shoot the puck themselves. Zacha and Coyle are the worst culprits.
    I think the frustration with Pasta comes from some bizarrely low hockey IQ plays that he tends to make. Lots and lots of giveaways at the offensive blueline, for example. The no-look pass fails 9/10 times. The complaints about him would simmer if he cut back on these things. I think it's a fair expectation that he plays *a little* more defense, too. He's making 11 mil. That's too much for him to spend most of his D-zone time floating.
