Frustrating. I almost had the same problem two days into a big tour. Fortunately I noticed the hairline crack but unfortunately left the spare key at home. Never made that mistake again. Managed to get a new one cut the next day.
The problem is caused by the fact you open 6 other locks with the one key, only the tip goes into the 6 locks, you’re twisting on the weakest part of the key, especially in the fuel cap. Get yourself 3 keys cut with no chip, cheap as. At your local electronic shop get 3 small aluminium HiFi volume knobs. Cut the keys short enough that only the required amount sticks out of the hole in the volume knob. You may need to file them down a bit to fit the hole. Then glue and screw the bit of key into the volume knob. Put one in each case and the glove box. The glove box is the key you use to open the fuel cap. The case key is the one you use to also remove the case. I’ve never broken a key since.

Glad yours was ok, funnily enough, yesterday I went to get a spare cut for another bike and because I had a blank key already they refused to cut it, will have to look for a independent locksmith ☹️

@@vroomroom1 blanks are cheap enough it’s the chip part that costs. Incidentally your old RFD chip will transfer or just cut it short and put the chip end on the key ring. They must, backup the chip before they do anything. All just personal experience and tips here for your viewers.

I’ve had nothing but problems with my ST1300. I’ve had over 100 bikes & this is easily the most unreliable. Build quality is terrible

Hi, once you have the key cut you can clone the chip which is only a couple of quid on eBay then there's loads of videos on CZcams showing how to clone the chip. It's easy to do 👍
