The crazy thing to me is at that point none of them knew what absolute LEGENDS they would grow to be!
❤
Every single person on that stage is a master of their craft.
The best I ever saw that a rare about to sound live just like there records no other band could do that maybe Marshall tucker
@@stevennowlin8711 then the gentleman did what they set out to do! They wanted their live audiences to hear exactly what they’ve been hearing on their records at home…their songs performed note-for-note! 😀
@@MrsBillyKeys you got that right, sure got that right!
Gary Rossinton great guitarist
They are historic. Ronnie Van Zant was a natural leader and everyone knew that. I cant remember a problem ever with them. They just got better.
Just listen to that crowd, man this band was loved and respected above and beyond.
It’s amazing that three lead guitars would never “step on each others toes”, mix was always perfect
And from all I have heard & read, there were no hard feelings when it came to playing leads. Allen & Gary basically learned to play at same time, taught each other before they were in band together, that's one reason they play off each other so well. Ironically, when Allen 1st started playing, he wanted to play rhythm guitar, not lead.
Ed was great as well. They all did their thing & never stepped on toes, whatever was best for the band's sound.
Then Steve came along, just as good IMO as Ed but he just didn't get the time to prove himself to the masses but he would have been huge.
He sounded diff than Ed & brought vitality back to Gary & Allen. Everything was fresh again. He could also sing & write so triple threat. G & A were so happy when Steve joined, they went though songs, we did them as far as who would play what. It had been just the 2 of them after Ed left them high & dry so they were used to doin it all but they knew Skynyrd was it's best with the 3 guitar army & best 3 guitar army ever iMO. Love these guys
@@kathyrais574 Then you throw Steve Gains into the mix, and it's a complete tech nightmare. Gains was so far advanced except for Allen Collins, but they got along very well, as they saw a future for the band.
Because of LOVE AND RESPECT FOR THE MUSIC IT GAVE THEM LOVE AND RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER.
@@seanmcdaniel7041 true musicians 💘
@@flachlandbraut Absolutely!
What a special band they where, every member was so talented, Steve Gaines bought so much to the table
A damn garage band worked hard and their dreams came true. Not another story like it. They smoked up and down.
Steve may have been the most talented of them all, what an amazing voice and shredder!!! He and his sister were only there for such a short time....Such a tragedy.
all of their songs are great . the Rolling Stones make a few duds sometimes !
Wow! I’ve known of this band forever but only now do I appreciate how freaking good they were.
No flashing lights, flash pots, lasers just good ole rock n roll.
and NO CELL PHONES
This video is a national treasure. This is Skynyrd at their peak. even though it is b&w we are lucky to have this, and the audio is actually decent. Thank you Bill Graham for giving us this amazing look into the past...
Kids this is what a real rock n roll band looks like. Americana at its finest. Great music. I could watch this all night. No doubt about it.
Ronnie Van zant is such an incredible singer/songwriter... The whole band is tight, Steve Gaines is an absolute monster on guitar. Such an arsenal of top notch musicians. A complete joy to watch. Watch it about 5 times. Then tell me if you don't agree with every word I said 10/10.
AMEN!!!!!
You said it right, THANK YOU BILL GRAHAM
Prime Skynyrd. Steve Gaines wow just wow..that solo he created for the ending of Sweet Home is some of the best guitar work I've ever heard. Starts at 54:06. He does a bit of a better job with it on the One More From The Road version... still amazing.
Great comment
> Can't say it any better..
🎸Steve Gaines you are badass...forever..RIP🎸
If Gary and Ronnie were the heart of Skynyrd, then Allen Collins was the soul. His 6 minute blistering, mind blowing solo at the end of Freebird is worth the price of admission by itself. Best live concert I've ever seen in 20 yrs.

Hold on to your R.ossington Collins music if you got it
I agree with you there son. Rossington played about all the memorable guitar licks and Collins would come in and play unmatchable 10 minute solos! I can't separate them in my mind...they play off each other like they're one. Like Jimmy Page with 4 hands lol. When I share my list of top guitarists, I always list Rossington/Collins as one. You can't have one without the other imo. Steve Gaines is great, but he's no Ed King. There's more to playing with Skynyrd than speed. He would have learned though, he just needed to be "Skynyrdized" a little more.
Thank you.....I know so too ....❤😊
Yes. I saw also. Awesome
I can only imagine how far this band could’ve went if the plane crash didn’t happen. They were amazing and made unforgettable music in the short time they had. Music is still played today in 2022. And it still rocks! ❤
And Becky, sweetheart, they ALWAYS WILL! This 😢 concert was months before the crash, I've NEVER found a band I love more, Ronnie has/had the voice that cannot be replaced or matched, what a horrific loss, one of a kind FOR SURE!
THEY HAD ARRIVED!
They had great success even after the crash, but it was.just never the same and not as good in my opinion. There have been other band that have done well after replacing the front man. Acdc comes to mind. But there just ain't no replacing Ronnie or Steve.
Just my opinion, I don't blame them for trying to carry on.
@@rogerpoindexter849 not the same band without Ronnie at all.
The plane crash robbed us all of so much more to come from Skynyard. I can see Bob Burns and Ed King both getting back with them. Even if for a song on an album or joining them on stage once and a while. So very sad!
It tears me apart when I think about what could have been, but I am learning to be thankful for what we have. It isn't often that a band of this caliber finds each other, so I am gonna be grateful for what we got, and always yell "PLAY SOME SKYNYRD!"
Ronnie Van Zhant= Most underrated frontman in music history
he didn't need to run around like a monkey; no need to show off when you're that good.
Not by anyone one on the thread. King of Southern Rock!
Fifteen years ago today the world lost Allen. These guys will always be missed!
Maybe 25 years ago, but the sentiment is the same. He is missed & is a legend.
OOPS!
I wish it was only 15 years ago, at the very least, he deserved 10 more years.
***** Don't forget Leon as Bob Burns calls him Mr.Humble
dreggymon Poor soul had such a tragic life, I hope he's enjoying eternal rest.
The guitar solos in this concert are just sick! So much talent in this band. Not bad for a couple of Country Boys!
Not bad??? They are the greatest southern rock band ever!
Just think of what we missed out on because of that plane crash or if your a glass half full type then just think of what we got WOW
Watch the original free bird 1974 over 11minutes of just Allen Collins on solo.Longest guitar solo in history.
You better believe it, brother.
Steve Gaines , YOU GOT THAT RIGHT !!! !!! !!!
If I leave here tomorrow would you still remember me... 38 years later we still do
+Helene Kane Their songs, not only Freebird, have a prophetic quality to them, strangely enough. I will always remember them, even though I am only 35. My mom saw their last Chicago show. So lucky. RIP to the victims of the crash, we love you guys!

So very true you got that right
Acapulco Gold. Well, I haven't heard that in about a long, long time. Good good, good good times, right alongside Skynyrd.
Awesome
I was at this show. July 13, 1977. I was not quite 17. There was a black out in NYC that night. Great show. After, I waited for the limos to pull out and when they did I knocked on the window of one of them and waved and said, “Hey, Man!”…and someone with long kinky hair - I believe it was Allen (the windows were tinted), flashed me a peace sign. I’ll always remember that.
That must’ve been amazing man.
Great story man. I saw them a little over a week before this. I was 13, and I'll never forget it as well. Bill Graham Presents: Day on the Green, Peter Frampton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Santana and The Outlaws. If you've ever seen "Freebird, the Movie" the performance of Freebird at the end is the show I was at. What a great memory, and chance of a lifetime to see this lineup. Saw them a few times after, but nothing will ever compare to that day. 🤘
never happened, child.
Great memory! 🤘
on the hunt tour gimmie back my bullets and the live album were the shows i went to in Seattle Wash. the On the Hunt show was at the 3,200 seat Paramount Theater i turned to the crowd during FreeBird and everybody was playing air guitar lol
Steve Gaines was just beginning to shine with the band! You got that right!
Gaines, what a talent
+Greg Patterson Yeah!
Greg Patterson what could have been. he was a true talent. I got a little sick watching want to tell them what is going to happen in a couple of months. sad. southern pride.
Ronnie saw the talent & skill he had & added him to the band right away... Ronnie knew talent when he saw it....
Huge loss... we only seen a snub of what he offered... reminds me a lot of John Frusciante.....
yes
It’s incredible how good they sound together. No auto tune or editing just raw talent on a stage together.
No auto tune because it’s literally 1977 and they have the best talent because of the hell house

Less than 100 days later, the world lost some incredibly talented people in that tragic plane crash. I was always just a casual fan, good music is good music after all. Then I saw the documentary, If I Leave Here Tomorrow, and it made me appreciate the band so much more. Absolutely raw, unfiltered, off the charts talent, coupled with hard work, dedication and totally devoid of any bullshit or pretense, their legacy will live on forever. RIP those that have passed on.

One of the greatest performances of Rock N Roll of all time.
Lenny Skynyrd was the very first Southern Rock and Roll Soul music no one has ever coppied them, but all bands that came after all evolved from LS THE GREAT

This right here, is why I think they are better than Led Zeppelin, because even though Jimmy Page may be a better guitar player overall, he was too busy showing off, leaving the band to have to try to catch up and keep up.
@@sixshooter500 Jimmy Page although great for his time, and innovatively genius, couldn't hold the guitar strap of one of these cats.
Lots and lots of practice my friend 😉.
Those mushrooms didn't hurt anything either.
These guys were always so tight and well rehearsed. The three guitar attack was always intense. Fond memories of a better time.
Saw the original line up many times. Huge part of my teen years. RIP those who are gone. And thank you.🙏

Steve Gaines was that fucking good!!
You can see the adoration and pride in Ronnie's eyes as watches Gary, Allen and Steve play, but especially with Gary. These guys can take a shitty day and make it better in a song or two.. I can't help but wonder what they would be doing and sounding like now. I wish there were more live concerts sadly there isn't. God rest their souls and bless them. Rest easy. Thank you for all the wonderful, magical music 🎶 ❤️🎵
Rust in peace my friends 😢😢😢😢❤
I get a thrill out of watching Ronnie as he watches Gary Steve and Allen
Not too long before this Gary was in a pretty bad car wreck. probably lucky to be alive let alone play guitar ,Ronnie's really watching him on Gimmie three steps, with what looks like admiration and damn Dude you ARE back
watching steven Gaines perform you got that right is priceless
very good
he never went by Steven.
His death is what breaks me up the most about that plane crash. He was finally succeeding after years of work, had a baby girl on the way, and it just ended. He was also just an amazing guy overall.
He had the better range too. So much f'n talent!
Yes it was priceless. Ronnie stepped back and let the kid go. Good Stuff
Fucking beautiful man.
Artimis kicks the shit out of the drums with solid grooves and great dynamics
What a great time it was to be young back then! We didn’t know how good we had it!
I would give anything to see these guys live. No other band will ever compare to them.
You can say that again
Yes true they are legend
I thought the present line up was great. I can only imagine how good this group would have been to see them live
I just saw them this past summer. They ROCKED!! But I agree, the original players would have probably taken my breath away! #SkynardNation
Your right
2022 still brilliant
Man, Steve was a great addition to the line up, love his style. Ronnie put together the perfect band
He was never recognized by musicians but he was great!!
Thanks to Cassie! She's the one who finally talked the rest of the guys in to trying him out! At first she told them how good he was and they didn't believe her... Ha, boy did he show them!!
Perfect video if you ever needed a reminder about how damned special and talented this band was! They deserved so much more than a rickety plane ride.
It's a shame that with so many great songs by this band, "classic rock" radio only plays two or three of their songs over and over.
Depends on the market you live in.
Who listens to commercial radio anymore?
Back in '77 FM radio in NY Philly area played deeper cuts of most bands. Whole album sides , more requests etc. Radio and media in general has just gotten shallow. Satellite radio doesn't impress me for classic rock, my own collection has more to offer, just hit shuffle.
But thank goodness we have the technology to witness this band at their peak. I only fantasized this would be possible back in the 70s.
Yep, so much great shit that a lot of folks have never heard. (edit) glad I'm not one of 'em. Gimme some Mississippi Kid and some Was I right or wrong
I've always thought of Skynyrd as Rossington/Collins but MAN STEVE GAINES What an absolute freight train of a guitar player. Like unbelievable
These guys were absolutely loaded with talent
Gary Rossington another underrated guitarists.Dont think I ever heard him play a bad note.
gpetropolj Yes Gary Rossinton very under rated and very very good!!#!
Yeah he was the lead player no question hands down ,it's funny now he doesn't play hardly any lead he gives it up to Mark and Ricky
Scott Keller that piece of shit gene Odem called him a second rate player what crap back in the day he was great and still is what that man has gone through and still brings it
gpetropolj
@ Scott
After playing for over 50 years and being a top rated guitarist, Rossington has laid back some. He still has major problems from his arm being almost ripped off in the plane crash and arthritis is a problem in those areas. So at least give it to him for his major licks. He's one of the world
s best.
Steve Gains was ready to take these boys to the next level. That boy was hot!!!
trudaroof gaines took control over this band
Maybe a better singer than ronnie too. But ronnie wrote great lyrics
Interesting that Leon sang with Ronnie on 'Call Me the Breeze' tho. Steve coulda done that too 8)
Leon sang backup with Ronnie plenty other times in the Ed King version of the band and before Steve came along on songs like of course The Breeze, Gimme three steps, I'm a Country boy, Got the same old blues and Alabama with Ed and Ronnie before the girl singers came along too.
fuknArite Steve Gaines was taking them above and beyond,we will never know what could have been..we know, but we never got the chance to experience the next big thing after Street Survivors follow up....
I believe they were just at their best right before the plane crash! That was such a tragedy. Imagine where they could have gone! Glad they left recorded music video for all of us! RIP LS

Really makes me sad what happen to them. I wish I was old enough to see these guys in person back in the day. It’s weird certain people that are unique have such bad things happen to them
Yeah, man. Skynyrd was like a rock symphony orchestra having a 3 guitar band is no joke - everything composed and worked out in the tune PLUS they could improvise on top of that!
@@zachkelly89 but they and ronnie knew long before the crash day that the plane was falling apart and still they chose to do nothing about it, very strange.
amazes me how they come up these kinda riffs at their age, try playing the Bass line to Simple Man, ain't that damn simple, Ronnie would have kick my ass several times then probably would've shot me, still learning
I remember in a little town with 200 people leaving school at lunch walking across the street and turning the Jukebox up at the pizza joint that I worked at listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd sitting there by myself because I had the key to the place. That's when I really started getting into Lynyrd Skynyrd. I remember listening to their new songs and it was like the next day in class a little red-haired girl handed me a note saying Lynyrd Skynyrd died in a plane crash last night. I was exactly 10 years old when this was filmed.Born on 7/13/1967 This is by far the Greatest Band to ever play for us. They now live on thru all of us that keep on loving there music..............................................................................................
One of the last Freebird's to be sung/played... it's beauty, timeless.
I love how Ronnie stalked the stage and watched the guitars with such observation...
@ Rob
Yeah, it's said that he fined them $ 1000 per missed note. You gotta be good under that kind of pressure, or else stay broke or jobless
@@TheFruitloop186 the band members probably gladly paid up. In the early years Ronnie would slap em around if they didn't play well.
He was known for beating the crap out of own band members when they screwed up at practice
Doghouse Superstream Ronnie grew up in a rough neighborhood and was not well off, I do not want to say poor but he was determined to succeed and he was not gonna let other band members stop the success of the entire band!
@@johnnypissoff244 Thank You, Well said...RIP.. 10/20/1977
Now this is skynyrd...Ronnie just can't be replaced. His voice, style and energy will NEVER be duplicated..even by his own brother
AINT IT THE TRUTH RONNIE RULED !!!The STAGE 😁g
Imo Skynyrd died the night Ronnie died😢
INDEED!
like with every famous singer there are likely many people right now who can sing exactly like him but there's always something that gets in the way of hiring the perfect replacement, in this case family. Right now there is at least one guy who can sing exactly like Layne Staley, Ive heard him on yt but for whatever reason AIC keeps the black guy who sings very well but sounds nothing like Layne. It's a shame, an established great band is a rarity and when a component is lost, the replacement should be as close to the original as possible, identical would be ideal.
@@joejones9520 Thanks for sharing this nonsense.
Best live band ever, they had there shit together..👍
I just imagine what Steve and Ronnie could have done beyond their last album. Two great talented singers, song writers.
Yes of course but Allen and Gary were no slouches either with Allen writing this ripping tune That Smell
Don't forget Cassie.
Yes sir. We are very lucky to have this footage of Steve. Singing & playing song from Street Survivors. He was really finding his place in the band & sounded amazing! Just a tip of the iceberg we would have seen from him
@@kathyrais574 I agree. His guitar playing seemed to bring life to the other guitarists. Ronnie seems to have enjoyed being on stage with him.
@@blakegregory969 He was a triple threat, he played mean ass guitar, wrote lyrics & sang so I think it revitalized whole band
"These intermissions are brought to you by Budweiser,...the king of beers and ,Acopoullco Gold". LONG LIVE Ronnie Van Zant
Dude. That's my fav new. Saying.
Thanks. Brother
Acapulco gold filters, a stoney 3 hits longer! 😉👍
@Lebo leigh Leigh got that right !!!
Amen to that!
As a teenager growing up in the '70's in Jacksonville, these guys were like family to me. Loved each one of them and miss them dearly. Long live Lynyrd Skynyrd!
No one can ever doubt the superb musicianship of Skynyrd watching this. Unbelievably masterful and tight.
Ronnie Van Zant really liked watching the guys play guitar...it always brought a smile to his face...probably making sure they played it right too...lol.
Ronnie really got it !!!!!!!!!!!!
He dug the shit out of Steve Gaines. Best guitarist LS ever had.
Watch at 7:25 when Allen hits a few licks
I think Ronnie really appreciated the great guitar playing from all three of them!
Yes
If there is a heaven for me, I get to see every show from the late 60s till 1977
Our ideas of heaven are very alike
+James Ebert I'm coming there too.
I will see u there brother !!!🤘
I love that Ronnie gave Allen, Steve, Gary and Leon the spotlight during Freebird
Holy hell the piano in Call Me the Breeze boggles the mind. They were so amazingly good
All Ronnie had to do was stand there and sing. What a voice.
AMEN💋💋💋💋💋💋
And fucking barefoot too!!!
AND a cold Budweiser.
After a long night, Allen still had plenty of gas in the tank to pull off his amazing solo for the encore. Best live version of Free Bird I’ve seen or heard.
Ronnie had the best mules I've ever heard play together! FIRE 🔥
This is the version of the band I saw at the palladium in the city 47 years later still one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen
"If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?" Yes Ronnie, we'll remember you and your music for a long long time.
Forevermore. Always in my heart. I too hope to see them when I get Home to Heaven. I truly believe Ronnie was saved by grace.
FOREVER Guys and Cassie
Yes wood u remember me?
Allen Collins, rules!!
Amen to that. Growing up in the 70s was the best. 1970 thru 1978 we all were rocking to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Bros, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, A R S, U2, & so many more.
It still amazes me how flawlessly they switch back and forth taking lead guitar!! Masterclass!!
God bless whoever recorded this!
Well, thanks. It was the team I worked with, we called ourselves Performance Video, working for John Scher's Monarch Entertainment. I was the recording engineer for the video recording and sort of a half-assed producer, coordinating the tech side of things. This was shot on 1/2" reel to reel videotape. I've written more about it elsewhere for the tech geeks like me.
Legendary mythological glorious. Where can I read about the tech?
Thom Drewke TU! Great job!
@@tdrewke Thanks for uploading! !!!!!!!! Greetings from the Netherlands.
@@tdrewke I mean of course thanks for recording! !!
When I die and go to heaven I'm going to see them perform at no cost.. R.I.P guys love ya!!!!
If you gone a die,you free like a bird! Maybe an eagle :-)
Me too Regina. Just to see them one more time....I have to wait for when I go home to see these amazing artists.
@@ariedekoning6377 yes!!!I I want to be the Eagle tho.
