    Setlist:
    0:00:00 - Sweet Home Alabama
    0:06:58 - Freebird
    Personnel:
    Ronnie Van Zant - vocals
    Allen Collins - guitar
    Gary Rossington - guitar
    Steve Gaines - guitar
    Artimus Pyle - drums
    Leon Wilkeson - bass
    Billy Powell - piano
    Cassie Gaines - vocals
    Jo Billingsley - vocals
    Leslie Hawkins - vocals
    Summary:
Just three and a half months before the fateful plane crash that killed Skynyrd members Steve Gaines, his sister, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (of the Honkettes), and lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zandt, Lynyrd Skynyrd played this 4th of July weekend program in Oakland.
While this is only a partial recording of the show, two of the three songs are probably the ones you would skip to anyway: "Sweet Home Alabama" and the legendary closing track that has inspired legions of concert-going yokels to make millions of ironic requests over the years, "Free Bird." The first track is an excerpt of a standard Skynyrd live show cover, Jimmie Rodgers' "T for Texas" The guys take six minutes to stretch their legs on this version of "Sweet Home Alabama." The song had been released three years prior as a response song to the Neil Young numbers "Southern Man" and "Alabama," which were both critical of southern politics. Ironically, by some reports, Van Zant was wearing a Neil Young t-shirt at the time of this performance.
The show is closed with "Free Bird," which by many fans' estimations is only rivaled by Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" as the most epic closing song in rock history. Allen Collins handles most of the five-minute solo, while Gary Rossington plays the "bird-chirp" guitar parts, which are not on the original recording, as well as the slide work on the opening riffs. Billy Powell also plays a masterful piano solo that is unique to the live show.
While Lynyrd Skynyrd would release the multi-platinum Street Survivors in October of 1977, the band's structure would be fundamentally devastated by the crash of their private Convair 240 that took the lives of three members, as well as the pilots and assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and terribly injured every other member, except for Honkette, JoJo Billingsley, who was at home with her children and had reportedly begged the band to quit using the plane after dreaming of such a crash.
From the ashes of this Skynyrd incarnation, Van Zant's younger brother, Johnny, stepped in and made Lynyrd Skynyrd a popular band once more when they reformed in 1987. Lynyrd Skynyrd is planning to release an unearthed recording of pre-plane crash Skynyrd in 2009.

I was at this concert, 18 years old, just graduated high school. What a day it was. Music was hot, weather was hot, chicks were hot! So happy I was able to see Skynyrd in person before the devastating plane crash. They were so good and the best was still ahead of them. The songs/music the world lost, what a shame. Frampton and Santana were great that day too, great times that are long gone forever......

I was there too. I was only 13 years old and went with my friends who are 14 and 16 years old definitely was a hot day and the best concert I have ever been to!! Lynyrd Skynyrd completely rocked! Though I loved everybody that played that day! I really love Peter Frampton and Elton John and Santana but we were all there to see Lynyrd Skynyrd!! But I also really wanted to see Elton John. So many good memories of those days and the music. So glad I was able to be in that time.

My boyfriend always wanted me to sit on his shoulders and he'd be eating handfuls of shrooms, smoking Columbian gold, probably already shared a fifth - he never dropped me, but I have no idea how he stayed up! Partied hard and went to see just about everyone that came to Texas. youtube almost takes you there. And thanks for uploading the whole fabulous concert!

Oh God yes, I want my 1977 back. I turned 12 that October 13th. The plane of the GREATEST BAND EVER- LYNYRD SKYNYRD went down 7 days later. That is 7 DAYS into my 13th YEAR. And as of the day of this July 77' concert, I had been playing guitar for about 2 weeks. Music became my life!
Steve Gains is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, so so sad his life was cut short that tragic day, but so wonderful to know that his talent just sneaked by as the 4th 6-steel string slinger of Skynyrd's lineup. People say, "Steve Gains would have become a legend!" No, he IS A LEGEND!

I watch this as much for the crowd as I do for Lynard Skynard. I miss the 70’s and the joy I felt back then. Life was so uncomplicated. I can feel what it was like back just by watching the crowd. We went and did things back then and no one sat around inside or on their pc’s or phones (and not one overweight person or cell phone in that crowd anywhere!!) I miss those days and hate that my kids don’t know life like I did back then. Best days of my life ❤

Ronnie Van Zant was the fucking man. He led his band like nobody else ever has. The way he walked, the way he talked, he was not to be fucked with and that band knew who ran the show and he led them the right way. They blew up faster and bigger than anyone else behind Ronnie’s leadership. It’s crazy what he was able to do making the decisions for the band and doing so without any advising or any experience with such pressure and superstardom...doing so and being smart enough to turn down a lot of money knowing they’re worth more money.

Somewhere, out in that crowd, I was standing, with 4 of my shipmates. Had no idea who the hell these guys were. Found that out later after buying their LPs. We bought "dirt weed", that we smoked and smoked and smoked, and convinced ourselves we were high. Great concert that day.

in '77 I had some Japanese friends who a couple of them 1 time bought some weed, they couldn't understand why they didn't get high from it, so one of em asks me, being American, to check it out... I took a whiff in their baggie and told em, basically, they could put it on their pizza and eat it! I then explained how some dirtbags mixed cheap Mexican weed w/ basil & oregano... to sell it to unsuspecting "rookies", that's how it was explained to me in '75-'76. Yeah, life's a good teacher, hopefully people learn from experience.

Put a stiff drink in my hand and turn it up as loud as possible and I'm in hog heaven with the biggest shit-eaten grin you ever saw. "Kings of southern rock." I understand your opinion, they were truly great, I go with Allman Brothers Band, tho, personally; they were all great, though. I missed LSB in Philly, was too young to ever have seen ABB with Dwayne.

kewlbreez77 Skynyrd was more of a rock band and their influence was deeper than the Allmans. The Allmans were a good band, but they were just like the Grateful Dead. Jam on and on until you don't know what the hell your listening to. Skynyrd could write songs with meaningful lyrics with great licks and grooves. The Allmans made some great music, but I can't connect to their music. Two completely different bands.

I was there that day. There were four bands that played in this order: The Outlaws, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton. Lynyrd Skynyrd was the best. They had everyone stomping their feet to the music.

What a brilliant live rock band they were.
I was lucky enough to do front stage security (as a student I just enjoyed the gig and let the crowd go mad as I remember) at their De Montfort Hall gig in Leicester UK on Valentines day 1977 so just 5 months before this gig was filmed.
I saw as it turned out their last ever original line up gig in the UK.
Fantastic memories of an awesome live band.

the amazing thing is how good there tone was. this is 1977 .with todays amps and gear just think what they would sound like.

    • @rs8707
      @rs8707 Před 2 lety +4

Not any better. They are all trying to emulate the vintage amp sound of the 60s and 70s now...
