Summary:
By the time Lynyrd Skynyrd played this sold-out show at San Francisco's Winterland ballroom, they had become the unmistakable kings of Southern Rock. Spearheaded by charismatic frontman, Ronnie Van Zant, the group had taken southern boogie from the swamps and brought it to the masses.
There is an enormous amount of energy and power in the multiple guitar mix of the band, and that is clearly apparent when they launch into solos on these songs. The group had built a solid following via AOR radio by 1975, and songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" had given the band enormous crossover appeal. The group was coming off two hugely successful albums, its debut (pronounced leh-nerd skin-nerd) and 1974's Second Helping, and they had recently replaced original drummer Bob Burns with Artimus Pyle.
This show was recorded during the band's tour promoting their 1975 album, Nuthin' Fancy, and it features Lynyrd Skynyrd at the top of their game. It was also one of the last shows featuring their original three-guitar lineup, as Ed King left the band midway through the tour. Skynyrd confidently played its brand of riff-driving Southern fried rock boogie to near capacity crowds on this entire '75 tour.
Poignant songs like "The Needle And The Spoon" are balanced against established Skynyrd rockers such as "Saturday Night Special" and "Gimmie Three Steps." Songs like "Whiskey Rock-A-Roller", J.J. Cale's "Call Me The Breeze", and "Sweet Home Alabama" are played here in their early forms-many of these classics would re-emerge as part of the must-do repertoire of so many country artists.
The band ends the show with a predictable but crowd-pleasing, version of its radio anthem, "Free Bird." Sadly, the band would change drastically when some of its members, including lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, would die in a plane crash two years after this show was recorded. - Hudba
I just heard the news of Gary’s passing. The original Lynyrd Skynyrd is now reunited in heaven.
Fly high, Free Bird 💔
Allen Collins is one of the greatest guitar players of all time,so underrated.
All three are stupid af ❤
I always believed that too. This is my favorite lineup and to me Allen Collins is my favorite guitarist in the band. The other 3 are tied foe second but if I had to pick a second clearly Ed King was the one and he too is underrated. Now Gary and Steve could just as easily carry this band. But Allen is still incredible and like Ronnie no Ronnie no Skynyrd no Allen same thing he’s that vital to Skynyrd’s incredible sound!
Indeed. I always thought Ed's strat playing was perfect with their gibsons. Perfect spice for the music 😂
You are right my friend Allen was one of the best and so was Gary,Steve and Mr. Ed. They were all great and we will never have another band like them. These boys were on key every show,as if they were in the studio every time ! RIP guys.
He's at the top in my eyes.. Allen Collins -rock/tony rice -bluegrass
Allen Collins, with his energy, makes you feel 19 again, no matter how old you are!
Me (while I'm not even 19 yet) reading this: right??
Absolutely, Allen Collins gave his Gibson Firebird or Explorer a workout every time he stepped on a stage!
I was 21 when I saw them at the Hammersmith Odeon London later that year. What a band! What followed was a lifelong love of southern rock including Black Oak Arkansas, Charlie Daniels, Allman bros, Molly Hatchet 38 Special and latterly BlackBerry Smoke. Thank you 👍
@martynanstis1620 He'll yeah. Just saw Blackberry Smoke a few months ago in Wilmington, NC. Definitely cut from the same cloth.
I was at this concert , About 15 feet back from the stage . I was really surprised when I found this . Charlie Daniels opened this show They were amazing as well
Please write all you can remember!!
😢@@jasonh.8362
Ed King, to this day, is still one of my favourite players of all time. Allen and Gary, and later Steve, we’re all fantastic players in their own right as well.
This should be remastered in color! Epic performance by the boys!!!
I watched a interview with Gary many years ago and he said when he gets up there he will tell them all about it,go tell them brother that we’re still listening to there music, best band that ever walked the earth,RIP Gary play it pretty in heaven ❤
One of the best concerts i had the Honor of attending was at the Nashville fairgrounds in the summer of 1973! Skynyrd was the warm-up band for ZZ Top. One of the band members tore their t-shirt into strips, they all tied on headbands and marched out to the Confederate taps beat. One would go left next one to the right. A grand entrance of showmanship. From the first note they were Smoking Hot ( so tight)!! They only had Pronounced out but Ronnie introduced us to a bunch of New songs off Second Helping ; our New album out soon". This was my first of many concerts and 50 years of listening & singing along. Have to thank my buddies Mike & Gary for inviting me to go along that Sunday. A shout out to my 93 yr. Old Mother who would play their music while riding in the car; D.J. would turn to me and say...... They are so tight! Yes, I would respond with a shit eaten 😁 on my face. Knowing I had one Cool Mother who appreciated Lynyrd Skynyrd like me and All my friends till this day! D. J. 's in heaven now listening to Elvis, Eagles and SKYNYRD!
@@johnsullivan9651my pops who died in 18 at 83 was a DJ in the late 60’s and ear70’s. He brought me home the Pronounced album in 73. I instantly fell in love with that album and still have it. It’s been through it all these years. I thank God I too had a super cool parent.
Allen and Gary and Ed on the same stage is beyond words the top of the BEST.
My favorite. I love Gaines badass. But this is top live video for me. Killer
Ed King was popular with my peer group in Jr. High, with Strawberry Alarm Clock' Incense & Perrmints.
The four LS guitarist represent the most multiple talents out of one band in rock history. Gary is the signature sound, Allen the virtuoso, Ed responsible for one rocks most iconic songs, Steve could play with all of them and his potential was unlimited
would like to know more why some of the boys had such troubles with Ed...shame that it did not work out for longer
SW twice. Your right
I never tire of this great band. They don’t make ‘em like this anymore. ❤️🙏
No they don't!! They would be cancelled now. The good ole days!!!
Yep those days are long gone got Dammit
@@pinchegreg1 at least we can watch it repeatedly like I do. That way they still live on. I was only 11 when they died but I had the pronounced album. I was about to get the live album and eventually all their albums. I traded a bunch of baseball cards for the gimme back my bullets album as a young teenager around 13 I guess. Good trade but I gave up a couple Pete rose from different years.
I've watched this concert many times on CZcams, there's no doubt that Rossington and Collins were the sound of this band and later Gaines took it to another level but I don't think people realize how bad ass and on point Ed King was, especially with that Marlboro hangin from his lips,RIP Ed King, you were an original.
Ed King didn't amount to a pimple on Allen's ass lol
@@jstrynzel You buffoon that was what Ronnie said after Ed quit. I loved Ed and thought he was a huge talent
Ed King also wrote incense and peppermints by Strawberry Alarm Clock
Agreed man, Ed King! Original dude, great sounds!
@@jstrynzel EK was so perfect for them!
Only show BP ever missed btw
I'm 17 and I feel like my generation has been cheated out of good music, I wish that I could go back to the 70s and feel the freedom of the southern rock community.(Rock on Skynyrd) we'll always love your music thanks for the years of amazing rock and roll.
If you feel cheated, which kinda were, but you should go pickup a nice epiphone les Paul standard away a pawnshop for like $200 and teach yourself to play guitar with the skynyrd DVD like I did that way you won't be cheating any one by yourself for not ?
You are being cheated, we all are today.
I'm blessed to experience the artists in 1970s-80s as a growing child, but now see we were being led away from families, jobs and farms by those promoting and using these talented amazing artists as lures of influence, that's why I think Ronnie was replaced by Johnny and changed spirit of band, similar to Bon Scott replaced in 1981 for his song Beating Around The Bush on Highway to Hell album.
John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley had no bands to replace them and could carry on without them during those days of changes.
Thanks Chat Bot. I kid, nice to see younger generations appreciate their genius
Are you still around and listening to Skynyrd? I surly hope so in these turbulent times! Never fall for globalization it’s a lie. Always stay a freebird!
Awesome band saw 3 times
I'll never forget that fateful day when the Skynyrd plane went down. A pain settled into our hearts that NEVER healed. Every time I enjoy a piece of their vintage performances I rejoice in their exceptional music and hurt for their families, friends and fans like myself for their loss was a forever stabbing to the heart.
Amen brother 🙏
Big time especially here in Gator Country!🤙🏻
Way before 24/7 cable as we just had maybe 3 or 4 channels on the TV.
Me and my best friends were playing poker one night as we were just 18 as we saw on the TV a photo of Skynyrd, we had to wait to see what happened as we waited until the news came on.
When the news came on they reported Skynyrd’s plane crash, but that’s all they said and later they gave us terrible news.
There were not many channels on the TV and No Mobile phones.
When the 10 pm news came on as we were devastated to hear the news! 😔
We were all stunned as they were our favorite band for sure!
We were at least blessed to have seen the original Skynyrd 6 times in concert as they came to Mobile and Pensacola all of their tours!
I still crank Skynyrd all the time!
I graduated high school , and went into the military overseas 60 days later. This band ruled , and honestly still does. ‼️👍🇺🇲😀❤️♥️
Finds like this are what make CZcams so great.
Yes, exactly.
You got that right!!

It's fun to watch Ronnie and his stage presence, he had a unique style like nobody else
3 of the best guitar players that ever lived right here on the same stage.
we really had a great time growing up in the 70's to their music. You'll never see music like this anymore.
@jameslomenzo1139 I totally agree Lynyrd Skynyrd that ever was that ever will be Skynyrd play your music live on you guys need to be in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland because Lynyrd Skynyrd definitely deserves it 🎶🎸🎵🎵🎶🎸🎵🎸🎶🎶🎶🎸🎵🎸🎶🎵🎸🎶🎵🎸🎶 can't you smell that the smell of since around you

He has never been underestimated Lynyrd Skynyrd has never been under estimated
You either love them or you hate them and if you hate them, there’s something wrong with you
@C C I said underrated and he definitely was. If you ask 10 people who Allen Collins was 5 would have no clue!!
Ed King was the best. He made them better!!!!!!!! RIP.
Formally of the Strawberry Alarmclock, love Ed's style
So professional, well-rehearsed... Ed King is always a joy to watch... Gary's chops are incredible... I think Allen was born attached to his guitar. RVZ rules! To this day!!!
Ronnie you are truly missed..... THE GREATEST SOUTHERN ROCK BAND THAT EVER WAS...
+ogrebattle22763 And you won't tell me no lies?
+itsadogsworld yaknow ....Wrong.
+itsadogsworld yaknow "Johnny sings better than Ronnie" lmao you're a special kind of moron, aren't you?
+itsadogsworld yaknow Ronnie never said that, quit making up bullshit. Johnny was only 16 years old when Ronnie died…
+itsadogsworld yaknow he merely threw the idea around, he never set any definite plans for that to happen. That was also before Gaines joined the band, after that Ronnie was re-inspired with Gaines on board. It also had nothing to do with him being "bored", it was because the alcohol-driven lifestyle of Skynyrd had started to take its toll on Ronnie's health and also because he wanted more time to spend with his daughter. Learn your facts before making a fool out of yourself.
Another killer live performance! Fly high Free Bird!
I'm a native Georgia boy so... I might be a bit biased, but, in my haughty opinion, these boys mostly from Jacksonville, FL, are not only the "Led Zeppelin of the South", they are the best band in modern rock/pop/music history to ever come from these United States!
This performance should be digitally colorized and remastered.
Where you from Sam?

I live right down the street from where it all started, been here 61 yrs. heard and seen it from the beginning, still rocking The Skynyrd, pass by the Jug bar all the time where the song gimmy three steps was about, the field where they used to play ball is not far from here.
On the hunt riff is possibly the first southern metal riff ever. Such an underrated tune. Always has been.
dude skynyrds riffs were heavy as fuck in general. from trust to I ain't the one, I'm actually a thrash metal fan. I like bands like Exodus and violence and I know these guys were heavy as fuck
On the hunt is one of my favorites, Skynyrd opened up with it in 75 with Van Zandt coming out barefooted and spraying wine on us in the first couple rows🎸🎶
I’m a HUNTER!!!
Loved Allens and Gaines work, Rossington was bad ass. Ed king you can't deny his riffs n solos. Honestly they all made the band. Without RVZ and the initial line up we wouldn't have none of this. Wish the world crapped out more badass musicians like these sad we prob wont see em with these kids who run this industry now. But woodsctock is in 2019. I wouldn't mind playing somethin like that man, bring some Hendrix up and s9me new shit
Sexy ass song too, something people today either forgot, or will never understand.
What a fantastic concert! I can hear Ed Kings guitar solo's so clearly, it is sheer bliss!

Happy to have taken my little sister to her first concert ❤️, and even happier that it was this great band !!!
Ed Kings tone on whiskey rock and roller was phenomenal!
And on Freebird. My favorite versions of that mostly involve Ed.
Smug and low-key Ed King is a total MONSTER on guitar, most underrated ever....
R S. Ed is pick'n lt a part , seems like every time the spot light shines on him ol Gary moves in to get even more of it. Lol Ed doesn't do that he just played it and did some singing talented and it shows at this concert !!
Underrated is so right, he was a music master..
I got to talk with Ed on Facebook, and as nice as he was (maybe because I didn't ask questions), Ed himself downplayed his importance in music by saying this:"I was just a punk kid who got lucky."
Very humble.
@@jacobabrownful yep
Ed King filling in for Billy Powell’s solo on free bird was really beautiful. What a band!
i wondered if it was before they had a piano in the line-up. so where was billy powell? it is a great performannce but i missed that piiano intro
Rare & unique to hear them in 75' without Billy on piano. I love Billy but enjoyed this, it was heavier. ED to complete the 6 piece here too!!
That's because he was busy being a Roadie for the Band. They didn't know he was a Killer Pianist. They promptly fired him, then hired him for the Keyboards.
@@jordandickerson4069while that story is true, he was a member of the band for quite a while at this point. He didn’t play this show because he put his hand through a glass door the night before and couldn’t play.
Man alive, with Artimus (drums) and Ed King (guitar) they were TIGHT! Woot!!
Only if Billy was at this show to play his parts and solos in songs like Whiskey Rock N Roller, SHA and Mr. Breeze and of course Free Bird, then this show would been even more awesome!
No filters, nothing but some minor PA feedback, and Ronnie singing "ON THE HUNT" like a man possessed with that hypnotic descending bass line.He sounds better than Joplin for sure, and doesn't miss a note, high or low. What a powerful set. Jeez, they were beginning to soar at Winterland. By 77 and by bringing in Steve Gaines they went to another stratosphere. What a short time they were there. A band soaked in talent built around the songwriting and singing of one man who just stood there. He did not need to dance around. He cannot be replaced by a brother, or anyone. He was Ronnie Van Zant. He was Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Jerome Brown ......
yep
Jerome Brown lol he sounded better then Janis , where'd that come from? He sounded better then Jesus 😜
Jerome Brown Steve Gaines was the man!
he was part of that machine bro,so many talented member s in that band,he wrote lyric, but the members wrote the music also,WHAT band gave them their first tour....PETE TOWNSEND..WHO!!..RONNIE DEF HAD THE "IT" FACTOR THEY WERE A GREAT LIVE BAND,SCRIPTED EVERY SHOW.NO JAMMING,..
Man .......Alan Collins was a monstrous guitar player !. When you can stand out in a band that also has gary rossington and ed king you know you're a monster !
Thanks for the music Ed King. You will be missed, as will all the members of this definitive line up.
Yea I always liked Ed. I got to see him again in the 97 Tour after the accident.

Oakland and Knebworth are definitely better with Steve Gaines. Also Billy is missing on this one.
What about 76 winterland.that was a good one too
@@johngullo9420 I like Steve for sure. I've always though Ed King's guitar was the right fit for the band. Allen, Gary and Ed have that right sound.
What I would give to be back then watch them. It was not just music it was magical and real! Born in 82 but since I could walk I loved this band all of them! Still do to this day!
Pure talent ; all of them !
This ole Florida boy grew up listening to skynyrd!! I still have my pronounced album I’ve had since the earlier 70’s! It’s incredibly beat up and hangs up in my garage!
Where I went to high school in Marin across the bridge from San Francisco, southern rock was huge! A bunch of us girls would take the bus over to the city, get dropped off on VanNess & Geary and walk up to the venue, Winterland. Then we’d walk back down to catch the bus back to Marin. Those were the fuckin’ days. My dad was a cop in the city and he thought this was ok. Never could do that now a days. Blessed to grow up where & when I did. Saw so many epic shows!! God Bless, Bill Graham!! 🎶
Love Marin, the real Northern California border. What a profound difference the state is once you cross the Golden Gate Bridge. Nice people, cold windy nights, rolling hills, dark skies.
I was there too... fringe , beads, chocker, long hair rocking back and forth. 2024
It’s rare I’ll watch a concert on CZcams from beginning to end. This was the exception.
Ronnie Van Zant sexy and soulful as ever! Those guitar players and drummer... what a combination of excellence! Best rock and roll band ever!!❤️❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I will always love how in control of the entire band Ronnie is. He just stands there and directs the whole band. In another video Allen goes a little off on a tangent and Ronnie calmly taps his shoulder and Allen gets back in line with the original solo. They were so much more than Sweet Home Alabama.
He was the director and leader of the band for sure. Just like James Brown. Wanted his boys to always be on their toes and tight as a drum.
@@rudolfschenker absolutely or even Michael Jackson. Same deal. The hours behind the scenes really shows when you get on stage. And then of course you Have Freddie... but that's another story for another day 🤣🤣. The greats always leave us too soon

lucky you...THE BEST AMERICAN BAND EVER!!!!
Actually I love Lynyrd Skynyrd and always have but my favorite all American band is The Carter Sisters with Mother Maybelle with or without Chet Atkins. I discovered them thanks to the Railroad song and searched for Jimmy Rogers videos, it's a long story but I bought everything I could find that they recorded and their legacy and body of work is amazing. Awesome talent.. Fly on Freebird I will always love RVZ and company and they are my second favorite band, but The "Girls" were planting the roots of American R & R years ago when they were touring America in the 40s and 50s especially with Chet Atkins on lead guitar. Helen accordion, Anita on Bass, Mother Maybelle on rhythm and lead guitar and the first real "front man" or women in this case June Carter... Their lead and harmony vocals are unique and unmatched. I have 35, 15 minute shows from their 1949 KWTO Springfield Missouri radio show. They were cutting edge for the day. They were drawing thousands to live shows all over. And not only that but these Sisters were beautiful!! Elvis opened for them in 1955 and was smitten with the beautiful Anita Carter
A very underrated guitar player. I could never figure out why he didn't end up in another more famous band...
God Bless Bill Graham for catching this!
My First Skynyrd Show!
At 37 born in 86 , this is the best concert that exists. They were the best of all time growing up . And Still are .
I was at this show and have managed to remember quite a few things, First, during "I Ain't the one" Ronnie walked toward the front of the stage Spinning the mic as a HUGE Confederate Flag unfurled in the background, 2) I can still see all of the young ladies in the crowd up on the shoulders of the guys during Free Bird.... After that, the band walked off stage and a few of the band members emerged (either after Free Bird or the Encore) to tell the crowd that they "Had played everything they knew how w/o Billy, because he cut his hand"...Then last year the band (What is left of it) played in S.D. at Humphrey's by the Bay, I showed up and waited in the Parking lot with a guitar I wanted Gary to sign. As the show ended and the guys streamed past me on the way to their bus/van, I asked Gary to sign and he kept walking. So I said "Aw C'mon man!, I was at the Winterland show where Billy did not play because of a cut on his hand"...Gary stopped looked at me and said, "You were at that show"? "Yes" I replied. "You came out and told the crowd you had played everything you could w/o BP" he smiled at me and signed my guitar
Confederate flag bullshit
Now, that's a story worth tellin'!!! God bless & good for you!!!

Trust me Rusty we got to the show at 8am it was raining for about 3 hours someone got a Parachute and tarps to cover us while we waited in line for the concert and after it stopped raining it got cold they let us in early about 5 pm! We never heard Lynyrd Skynyrd before and Freebird was the last song they played!!!!!! needless to say a couple of us were blown away by the song but everyone wanted The Who to play and after the concert we got a flat tire and we had no jack it took a long time for someone to let us borrow their jack!!!!!!!!!!!! can't make that shit up Bro!!!!!!
Ed King jamming on Whiskey Rock a Roller is so freaking good. All three leads are damned good in different ways. What a treat to watch and listen with headphones. Here we are 49 years later and it still runs rings around the current bands.
RIP Gary Rossington, the last rebel is no longer. Up there jamming with Ronnie, Allen, Ed Steve, Billy, Leon and Bob again

top notch man for sure are his fingers really that big or is that a shorter necked guitar?
His hands were that big. The way he played the neck he more just typed on the guitar. When I first seen him play like that I was hooked. He played bass on the pernounced an also all the horns you hear on second helping an nothin fancy we're all Ed
Thing is he does 4 harmonic in a row up and down the neck that fast and then uses the whammy bar on the last one
That song was his masterpiece. The whole thing came to him in a dream. He left one hell of a mark on that band.
If you left here tomorrow......yes we'd certainly remember you and we do! These guys were awesome and taken way too early at the peak of their lives. RIP fellas, thank you for the music!
Kick-ass music, Southern pride and not apologizing for a damn thing.
Just how it should be.
Well said
This concert is my favorite piece of music I've ever heard and I've listened to it literally hundreds of times of the years and it never gets old! But always leaves me wishing what if.
Best lineup of all-time right here folks!
Dagger 323 .... Bar none!!!!!
I'd say they got better 1 year after this when Stevie Gaines joined the line-up
Dagger 323, I have to respectfully disagree , Steve Gaines brought a ton of talent to the band, he cud sing, play guitar and write songs. How many other members of the band have you seen RVZ let sing lead vocals?
Nah man they were better with Gaines
Absolutely!!!!
I'd give the twins to see pre-crash Lynyrd Skynyrd live just once more before I die. Hell, I'd give Big Jake too. My god how I've missed them for 40 years.
Narquatt Slagg I saw them in ‘75 in MIlwaukee, WI.........never forget it.
Thats a comment i can agree with and thats funny i dont care who you are lol lol lol lol lol
Free Bird one of the greatest songs ever!
I saw Skynyrd in January of 1976, with the Outlaws opening. I believe that Ed King had already left. It was one of the stand out concerts I went to. Ronnie VanZant was always in control, on stage. He had an impeccable sence of timing. A very tight band. Any concert footage, no sloppiness, or screwups. The concert sounds were as good as the vinyl sounds. I don't know of any groups that had that ability. Skynyrd died when Ronnie did. What a loss.

EXACTLY Right!! You echo my thoughts. Ronnie was like the Ultimate Orchestra Leader.. He oversaw everything happening on stage. IMHO, Skynyrd was at its BEST when Steve Gaines joined. My Lord.. The connection, intuition and love those three guitarists had with each other and Ronnie.. It was Spiritual!
THE reason for their perfection is not of this world is what people don't understand. these people are phenomenon's among regular men, their potential to be prefect together is meant to be for a reason. One day we will be shown why !
Plane went down on way to do our show in Michigan that we had to get tickets mail order to prevent trampling each other in lines for tickets.
We all were excited at age 13 through 16 to go see them and heart broken by their plane going down.
I wasn't allowed to keep tickets as memorial by adults buying tickets they returned for refund.
I'd have to day the only other band I heard that could duplicate their lp sound was Rush.
What a great concert that was. We won tickets on the radio and went that night with a bottle of ludes and an ounce of weed. O God they were the days. What a great band. I'll never forget them.
Suz Valentino. So cool to hear that. Ok we got our tickets, I got 714's Roar, had a bag of reefers rolled we where in Tx. But hay we seen SKYNYRD and had a damm good time 70's. Too good !! What this up tight world needs some more good muz and Ludes ✌
Lucky Fucker!!!Hell I wasn't even born yet....lol I would have loved to see ronnie and this band
@@MsDta420 Beans,man! 712's,714's,Mandrex &Seconal! Drugs you could drink a keg too. Er..and wreck a car or two...
The greatest rock band ever , the best singer by far and of course the great guitarist who gave the vibe to the whole act , EDKING from california !
You’ve got to give Ed King a bunch of damn credit
Didn't know Ed did the slide work on this track. Always thought Gary was the "slide guy"
Rest PEACEFULLY brother Gary
I love the fact that Ed King plays 4 different guitars and fills in piano solos because Billy Powell had hurt his hand! That's the theory.(love Ed's slide guitar work) Ed sings backup vocals on Whisky Rock and Roll, Gimme 3 Steps, Don't Ask Me No Questions, Sweet Home Alabama. I love the original line up the best but Gaines was great and a great addition. I would of liked to see what they would of recorded if not for the obvious! Long Live Skynyrd, Fly that Confederate Flag Proudly! Gary and Allen and Ed were very special and never duplicated (The Original 3 guitar attack) Check out the sustain Gary uses out of his 1959 Les Paul and his amp at 28:40 ... This version of "Call Me the Breeze" kicks azz You can hear Ed on a Les Paul playing fill in licks and adds a great solo to go along with Gary's great solo and Allen playing rhythm. Wow no piano but the 3 guitar attack kills.. Ed Kings fill in leads on Sweet Home Alabama and Freebird are epic I ran lights and helped on sound for my brothers R&R bands as we were growing up Check Ronnie at 30 seconds into the show he looks over and motion thumbs up. He was telling the sound man to turn up the monitors so he could hear himself sing . Only roadies and band members understand that.lol
Tony, Ed was very talented and a great contributor to the band for sure, I mean (Sweet Home Alabama ) says it all. But in my opinion they were about to hit the stratosphere when the tragedy happened. Steve was an unbelievable talent, could write, play and sing and what stands out to me is this.... he's the ONLY one Ronnie let sing lead besides himself
I knew exactly what Ronnie meant when he did the thumbs up..... but I'm glad you included that in your description to confirm my belief that he needed the monitor turned up. Too bad Ed and Ronnie didn't see eye to eye, but you can only be "rode" so long before saying the hell with it. great stuff, just unbelievable that this footage exists.
I'm happy to hear a live Free Bird without that damn piano tinkling.
I instantly knew what it meant! Been on both sides....sound and band...
@@hk-wr2jt yea, good point. Powell was good though
My absolute favorite concert they did! Magnificent and the very best of this extronary incomparable band. The band that defind my youth. Class of 76, they were our personal group
+Susan Pethtal I am from the class of 76 as well ! We Loved Skynyrd in St Louis! And yea this freakin band changed our lives ,for the better!! I'm a Simple Man ; with a 20 year old son and I was Mr Breese, until I found that ;women and found true love ! ( I always come back to this concert when I have to have my Skynyrd fix....
Suzi Bailey-Pethtal class of'79!!!! Rock on my friends!!!!
Hell yeah! Class of 77 ! Fkn A bro!😎
Class of ‘76 as well. Bicentennial year. Saw LS 1976 Cicero Illinois and before that at the Ozark Music Festival Sedalia Missouri in 1974.
Every now and then you get the PERFECT mix of people, and they take over the world. In Skynyrd's case it was a bunch of them. Of course Ronnie was the leader, but it couldn't been done without every fucking one of them! Best band ever!!
That was great! I grew up listening to them, but never saw them live. Had a bunch of their albums. They were all great albums. They never made a bad album, or a bad song for that matter. Man, they sounded great live. Those boys could rock!
One of my first concerts , hell of a f n show, Ronnie Van Zant, one cool guy, he's the reason the band was tight, sorry Johnny, you never came close
Kevin Kurtz It is what it is
Long live Ronnies words still today.Hell Yeah
For RVZ memory his brothers did and his legacy 2 his kids. Respect
EXACTLY....RONNIE IS NOT REPLACEABLE
Ed came out smokin!
Yes he did!
Amazing quality, the passion of Skynyrd's early years lives on
Some of the absolute best musicians in the world, gone way too soon.
these boys did not fuck around
DIDNOTFUCKAROUND
I love this comment. Bc it's so true.
Well Said
Saw them twice between 1975-1977 just an amazing band. RIP
Randy Piplica omg so so lucky whew I could only wish
Allen was a Great rhythm guitar player. Maybe the best, plus he wrote FREEBIRD!
Saw this show live 7/1/75! All time best!
One word, PERFECTION! It just doesn't get any better than these guys. Many have tried but no one comes close.
Couldn't agree more!!! They're my heart and soul!
The only band I'd put close would be eagles especially live.
Too bad I can't watch and listen uninterrupted by adds
IT IS GREAT TO BE ABLE TO listen to pure music and bring me back home to the SOUTHLAND!!!!
This is the best footage I've ever seen of this version of the band. The two baddest of the badasses on stage (and in most the early pictures) are definitely Ronnie, and Ed King. In the tribute band, we saw a kinder, gentler version of Ed, and further refinement of his talent. Liked Ed's solo following Gary's slide on Free Bird. Ed, Gary, and Allen were my favorite three guitarists in the band. They wrote the book on how to play without stepping on each other and they were the masters of that art. Where's the time machine? Beam me back, Scotty!
BB
Hahahaha , great comment. I love it!!
This is the real Lynyrd Skynyrd here, the best southern rock band there was and will ever be !!!!!!!
This footage captured their still raw talent, beauty and appeal for so many. One of the very BEST bands of their era, and if not for the crash, I believe, with a little more time to create, they may have become one of the greatest bands around.
When they play on the hunt, I get a chill, Gary Owns this one!
My favorite live version of Sweet home Alabama. No one can play it like Ed King.
Winterland was an epic venue. I have the 2 day DVD of the final closing the grateful dead blues brothers and a few others shut it down!
Such a loss. Ronnie Vanzant was buried just down the road from where lived at the time. So sad to watch the hearse pass by that day. :-(
Absolutely the saddest thing, Ronnie's death. I was only 11, and knew nothing of LS at this age, but was shocked to learn lately, that had he lived, he would be close to my dad's age now around 74. I see Ronnie and MELT. 😁 We can only imagine the wonderful songs, RVZ, would've written, had he lived.
Judy, Ronnie's widow, sobbed during the memorial dedication, when she recalled, how Ronnie, always referred to himself, as an Alabama man, which was weird, since he was from Florida, so his death in Alabama, was a tragic tie in to this. Judy said, she came to get him there to bring him home for the last time, and some 40 years later, you could still feel all the pain!
@@lolitagrant6751 He actually referred to himself as the "Mississippi Kid" and even wrote a song about it. The plane crashed (and he subsequently unfortunately died) in Gillsburg, MS, not Alabama in October 1977.
Real vocals real musicians.....👍👍👏👏✌️
One of the best live rock n roll performances ever.
OMG Railroad song. When Allen comes in...chills
Oh yea ❤
