At that time a friend worked in a record shop & sometimes he came up with rare records and/or even bootlegs or just with records from (here in Switzerland) unknown but great rock musicians/bands. One day he came and said with shining eyes: "Listen to this!" (it was the "Highway Song Live" album) and i was flashed by the energy of this music. A few months later there was a concert of our local (swiss) heroes Krokus with the supporting act Blackfoot. It was this concert and it was only horrible, how they soundmixed them down to almost making the songs unrecogniseable ... Apparently they didn't dare to provide the musicians with the same sound system as Krokus was using. Blackfoot = Great Rock Music!

@@chadcorley2702 yes sir indeed. Check out a song for me if you would please. I'm getting ready to jam it now. Type in SIMPLE MAN Warren Haynes live , it's the 19 minute version. If you don't know Warren was guitar player for decades for the Allman Brothers . He's a legend.

Incredible power ballad and this awesome melancholic voice of Rickey - a perfect combination for a big hit. Very close to Free Bird, folks. Unfortunately they didn`t have that commercial success they`d deserved. Want to hear a big "AGREED". Rock on guys.

I was in Jacksonville during the 70's & 80's. I saw All of them play in the bars around town - Skynyrd - 38 special - Molly Hatchett - Blackfoot and even though the Allman Brothers Band is from Georgia they actually formed in Jacksonville. For a season we were the RockNRoll capitol of the world and Ronnie was the King. It was a magical time, that passed to soon with way to many deaths. RIP
All of those bands had great guitarists! I would venture to say if you couldn't play, you couldn't hang in the Jacksonville music scene back in the day. Unlike LA or New York where it's all glitz and glamour, at the end of the day the talent is what keeps you going.

Hammersmith Odeon for me in 82. Having seen them support April Wine and Molly Hatchet in 81 , we knew we were getting a great show. Bloody loved them !!
Saw them around this time. They'd just released Dry County and Too Hard to Handle with live versions of Train Train and On The Run live from Donington on a double single. I went to see them at Sheffield City Hall. Best gig ever!
I saw them on the same tour but can't recall who they were supporting. I think it was Scorpions but could have been UFO or Dio. Whatever, great band and I was hooked!
Saw them open for Nugent around 82 and I remember two guys fighting in between the sets and Ricky Medlock came out and yelled at them! They stopped fighting. Awesome and VERY underrated band!
Was very fortunate to have seen Blackfoot at one of our small local nightclubs. One of the nightclubs owners was a member of the band Vixen, who had toured with Blackfoot. Awsome show! After the band came out and partied with everyone. Really nice down to earth guys. Rickey Medlock and the band autographed my Blackfoot album. What a fun night!
Blackfoot's live album Highway Song is definitely among the best live recordings ever - looking at this live act it's easy to understand why. Amazing what a man can do with only one functional lung!

My Pops showed this song to me when I was in 9th grade. 6 years later, it still gives me the goosebumps. So much emotion in the singing as well as the guitar playing. I finally checked out some other Blackfoot this summer and couldn’t get enough of Fox Chase. But Highway Song just holds a special place in my heart. 🤍
Blackfoot are the only Southern rock band that I liked from the 1970s/80s. A fabulous live band and 'Highway Song' was a great live song. Still sounds wonderful today; takes me back to the first time I saw them, at The Reading Festival in the early 1980s.
These guys are great. My band opened for them last September @ The Catskill Mountain Thunder Bike Fest. Not only did they rock the place but we hung out with them after their set for a good hour and a half. Real down to earth guys!
Heard the "Highway song live" album (recorded in the U.K) in 1983 and fell in love. I was 13 years old and was cruising with my brother and one of his friends in a Volvo Amazon. Played it loud as hell. Now I'm 54 and I still love that record. One of the best live albums ever!!! What a great band.

Has anyone really thought about how influential Jacksonville, FL has been on music? Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, Blackfoot, etc. I know there were lots of changes in personnel, some by necessity but so many of their songs have stood the test of time and still get radio play. It must have been something in the water down there.
I had the good fortune of seeing them live once in 1998, and this song blew me away. The ending jam on this is on the level of that in Freebird. It's too bad we don't see enough straightforward rock these days.
I never get tired of this classic song..Bought the STRIKES album in 1979 after seeing them open for Ted Nugent...and they came back a year later to open for AC/DC.. Met Rickey in 93 in Germany with the Blackfoot version then..Great guy.
This is one of my favorite classic rock "road songs"...you know like Turn the page, etc. I just picture them laying around on the bus and love having the image of what that lifestyle must have been like. When I hear the guitar in the beginning I get chills.
My son 15 years young now, after listening his daddy's records and after checkin this, told me that they don't play or do this kind of music anymore ; What can you say, the truth is to be sayed by them kids ;) Have a good day!
Charlie Hargrett, one of the best players around and one hell of a nice human being. What a tone in his fingers ! I wish there were videos of these guys when they used to be a cover band, they were tight. I used to be a punk kid on the same circuit as them.
There are a large handful of "Epic" southern rock songs... "Dreams" (Alman Bros), "Fall Of The Peacemakers" (Molly Hatchet), "Green Grass And High Tides" (Outlaws), and pretty much everything by Lynyrd Skynyrd and this is certainly in that list!
When I saw Blackfoot in the early 80s, the coliseum was sold out. During the slow part of the song at 3:10 it was prolonged a bit and I'll never forget this part. Every Bic lighter in the house was lit and as I looked around, no one said a word. The band had the complete, undivided and silent attention of everyone in the coliseum. Front to back, side to side and top to bottom. I'll bet you at least 40,000 lit up the place. One word describes this experience. Unfuckingbelievable!
Can't quite believe that the Hammersmith show was 30 years ago. Never seen a band take the roof of the Odeon the way they did that night. Just think of the quality that was out there at that time in music. I saw these guys a couple of weeks before Maiden who were touring 'The Number of the Beast' and a month before the Scorpions hit town to promote 'Blackout'. I feel blessed to have lived through that era.
brings tears to my eyes.... I remember life on the road with my band during those days..... goosebumps allover me.... million tnx for sharing..... i can't laugh this song's allover me.
This song rocks. Blackfoot gave us highway song, lynard skynard gave us free bird, kansas gave us dust in the wind. Indeed, the souths gonna do it again and again ( CDB ), southern rock rules........
I used to listen to this beautiful song every night when I came home from work in 1979 now getting to see them play this meaningful song means so much to me thank you for putting it on here thank you bro!
just to say Rickey still has it at 60 saw him last week with skynard would like to hear him sing again his voice. was lucky to see blackfoot twice in the 80, he,s great no matter when or where he plays
Doesn't get much better than this! Thanks for posting the live version. Great performance by the lead singer, guitarist. Lost a little bit of the guitar sound in the extended solo but just love the spirit and story that anyone can relate to. Raise those lighters up!
Diffenity want this played at my funeral service. Love Blackfoot, and Ricky Medlock.... Highly underated band. Saw Blackfoot in 1992 at Cadillac's bar and grill in Hickory NC twice. Amazing live band. Actually got to shoot some pool, and drink a few margaritas with Ricky at one of the shows there before they started playing. Ricky is a truly down to earth guy, offered to pay for our drinks, Ricky said no I got it. Great memories indeed...
Is 2024 who's listening? Who has lots of good memories behind this song? I do!❤❤❤ Excellent performance!😊

This is one of my favorite classic rock "road songs"...you know like Turn the page, etc. I just picture them laying around on the bus and love having the image of what that lifestyle must have been like. When I hear the guitar in the beginning I get chills.
This was the first thing I ever watched on you tube. I still come back.
My son 15 years young now, after listening his daddy's records and after checkin this, told me that they don't play or do this kind of music anymore ; What can you say, the truth is to be sayed by them kids ;) Have a good day!
Awesome rock and roll. These guys didn't receive the recognition they deserved.
My favorite song of all time. Perfect mix of rock, some blues, southern tone. Idk, I just love this shit lol
I love this song too. It is all those things you say. I'm 56 and it makes me feel like I'm 18 again.
BlackJesus
Lol. I'm only 53, but absolutely. ;)
ronald reed
Rick you are the total package.
Charlie Hargrett, one of the best players around and one hell of a nice human being. What a tone in his fingers !
I wish there were videos of these guys when they used to be a cover band, they were tight.
I used to be a punk kid on the same circuit as them.
This is from when Rock ruled the world and it was mostly southern. Awesome Song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of my all time favorite songs.
Love this live version killer vocals
and guitar!
Blackfoot is back together, thank you Ricky Medlocke, Spartanburg SC!!!!!!
What a great song! Rock music then was awesome! It reminds me of thumbing a ride on those cold nights from Chanute to Champaign-Urbana.
Saw "Blackfoot" with this lineup back in the day with Nazareth ! Great show! The kids these days missed a lot of great music. Peace.
I always think of Ronnie Van Zant when I hear this song. Don't know if it's right but I do.
They were good friends and Rickey played with Skynerd off and on before his present full-time spot.
Always thinkin of Ronnie
'82 was a good year...gave birth to my daughter...and taught her to LOVE THIS MUSIC!
Blackfoot, just love them. Rickey Medlocke is incredible, singing and playing.
This song rocks. Blackfoot gave us highway song, lynard skynard gave us free bird, kansas gave us dust in the wind. Indeed, the souths gonna do it again and again ( CDB ), southern rock rules........
You forgot The Outlaws Green Grass and High Tides
I used to listen to this beautiful song every night when I came home from work in 1979 now getting to see them play this meaningful song means so much to me thank you for putting it on here thank you bro!
stephenmr2 all of my friends are all dead I have no one to remix about these songs
These guys are gods....utterly underrated,, maybe even better than Lynyrd Skynyrd
Loved these guys back in the day Used to listen to Marauder in my 72 Chevelle with the Jensen Triaxles cranked back in 1982 :)
Fantastic song. Almost got me a number of speeding tickets. Had 1 cop walk up, heard the song and said "Slow it down.", and walked away. Cool dude.
Saw Rickey and Blackfoot open for the Who in 1981 (?) and became an instant fan. Great stuff.
Charlie Bay
Remember Rickey has only 1 lung. RIP Jackson Spires. And Walker before wigs.
..singing on and on..............2023......................lots of love everyone.............................
just to say Rickey still has it at 60 saw him last week with skynard would like to hear him sing again his voice. was lucky to see blackfoot twice in the 80, he,s great no matter when or where he plays
Doesn't get much better than this! Thanks for posting the live version. Great performance by the lead singer, guitarist. Lost a little bit of the guitar sound in the extended solo but just love the spirit and story that anyone can relate to. Raise those lighters up!
They were a force to recon with and loud as fuck. The energy level at their shows made them play hard and fast. Legends never die!!
Fucking Smokin Band - One of the Best Ever !!
