Two years ago I was passing through Florida and realized I was going to be near the cemetery where the band is buried. It was only 45 minutes before the cemetery closed so I made a quick detour. After paying my respects at Ronnie, Leon and Billy's gravesites, I got into my car to go to the other graves. When the the engine started the radio was already on and the first sound out of it was the intro to Sweet Home Alabama. I literally started to chill and tears came to my eyes. It was almost like the guys were saying, "Thanks for coming by to hang out with us for a few minutes." "Fly on Freebird(s)".

I got to see them 3 times, including their last concert in Greenville, South Carolina just before they got on that plane and crashed. As a Manhattan Yankee Rebel from the war against the British i will tell you that in the 1970's Southern Rock ruled the City from the Battery to Harlem. Lynyrd Skynyrd backed by Molly Hatchet at Madison Square Garden is still talked about as one of the Greatest Concerts ever. Long live the Lone Star Cafe.
My dad had a band in the 40's after WW2. He said the most important person was the drummer. The drummer has to be ever so slightly faster than the rest of the band to keep a consistent pace. Always remembered that.
I'm 113-years-old and Lynyrd Skynyrd is the bee's knee's and the cat's pajamas with their hotsy totsy brand of rhythm and blues music! We dance like a chicken with it's head cut off here at the nursing home whenever this song is played on the phonograph!
My younger brother is gone now after a nearly 30 year-long battle with multiple sclerosis. One day he brought home Skynyrd's first album, and I was immediately sold. As long as I can watch this, we'll both be young, strong, handsome, and looking to mingle. Oh, and he was right. These Southern boys sure can play.
Man, you listen and watch all of Skynyrd songs from Knebworth ‘76 and this really was something special. You just can’t help feel sad that it ended in October ‘77 so tragically.
I was there that day full of vodka and smoke, a month before my twentieth birthday. Long haired hard working youth with an abundance of optimism and a Norton cafe racer at home in Esh Winning. Also did Reading and Celtic Park that year. Great times🤯

I was always blown away by just how much talent these guys had. There has been some great southern rockabilly bands through the years, but nothing with the extensive "orchestrial" combination that Skynyrd put out song after song. These guys could've just as easily put on tuxedos and played at high-ball dinner parties in the best symphonies in New York then, and now. Amazing talent from every member!
Better have alotta greenbacks to have made that happen. Nah bra, tuxedos, orchestra ? Nuthin doin, nuthin fancy. Youd had to hog tie these bruthas to do sumthn like that....aint happenin. Barefoot, in the dirt, outside in the breeze...ok. New York, tuxedos, high-ball dinner parties? ...nahhhh, no thanks.
Ronnie Van Zant was a song writing genius. October 20, 1977, when a great big part of Southern Rock died. If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me ?????? The world has answered that question. True fans will always remember you. We will never forget.
Ronnie wrote some awesome songs - my band cover Tuesday's Gone which I think is a stunning song - but this one was written by JJ Cale. Skynyrd just gave it that country groove (mostly thanks the Leon Wilkeson's bass line)
This whole Knebworth thing is great stuff. The band was flying high with an integrated Steve Gaines. They played the snot out of every tune! If you can't foot stomp to this, check your pulse.
Hands Down... Not just the Southern Rock genre, but to me the very definition of Rock N' Roll. You have to be a southerner to be able to play with such soul and feeling these guys had.
They all quit school and said they were going to be a famous band and that set the stage for some of the best music ever and they changed the way music was done 👍🎉
I had never fully appreciated Steve Gaines' guitar playing until watching this. Just awesome! And EVERYONE was 100% on point! Best I've ever seen of Skynyrd!
Mr. Pringle, these guys were the best live. Someone else posted that this entire 1976 concert is on youtube, if nothing else these guys were entertainers. It would take 3 days to get your hearing back. Oh and don't buy the chocolate mesc.
P. White can imagine if he had a few more years to get into a groove ,I think we would have some I know a little super solo that went on for 10 minutes straight
I have always loved Skynyrd and Southern rock since I was 11 years old, and I'm 49 now. I am a damn Yankee by birth, but always have been a rebel at heart! :)
He's the most underrated of all the guitarists in the band. I wouldn't flat out call him the best but he's certainly every bit as good as Ed or Allen or Steve, in his own way. He was probably the most solid player in the band, and personally he's my biggest influence and the main reason I started playing guitar in the first place. Always been a huge fan of Gary!
I'm not a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan, but their version of Call Me the Breeze IS rock n roll. Solid as a rock, and rolling like an avalanche wiping any other band off the stage including the Prancy Dancer Stones.
If you really like Skynyrds cover of Call Me The Breeze; you might also really like their cover of the old blues song, Give Me A T For Texas and a T For Tennessee. They did that one when blues guitarist Steve Gaines joined the band and replaced Ed King shortly after this show
Ronnie died in 77 so he wouldn't be able to comprehend 2016 back then but i wonder how he would feel if he knew people by the millions are still loving his voice..My guess is he wouldn't believe it
I think it's safe to say that Lynyrd Skynyrd were among the epitome, if not THE EPITOME of Southern rock. I was very young when they were in their prime. Lynyrd Skynyrd had this "Southern magic"--for lack of a better way of putting it on my part--in them that made them an iconic band. From reading these comments, those who saw them perform live weren't just lucky; they were blessed.
I was 15 years old on July, 7, 1977, when I saw them play at the Dane County Memorial Coliseum in Madison, Wisconsin. It was my first concert. I was in the front row standing when they played Free Bird. I will never forget it.
4th of July 1976, LS was in Memphis, Liberty Stadium. The show started with The Outlaws, Blue Oyster Cult, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top came on just about dark. Was blown away, literally!!! Those were the days!! Sometime while The Outlaws were playing the stage was filled with guitar players, you know the bands were partying too!! Great memories!! Wish it had been recorded.
Just sitting here soaking it all in. Skynyrd used to reverberate through my bedroom walls as my brother began his wake up routine in the room next to mine. Don't have the words to articulate what I think of one of the Greatest Bands Ever!

Skynyrd really rocked the fuck on
Maybe the BEST Skynyrd performance! Sure everyone loves Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama....but this song is tight...and look at that amazing crowd!
I LOVE the instrumentals!
It’s a JJ Cale song(one of sir eric’s favorite guitarist. Outta Tulsa,OK
@@paulfarrehi4200 Thanks Paul!
@@ianlayton6949-And Gary Rossington’s guitar work.
He had an awesome voice too!! One of the best
Always. ❤
This whole Knebworth thing is great stuff. The band was flying high with an integrated Steve Gaines. They played the snot out of every tune! If you can't foot stomp to this, check your pulse.
Best thing to do! Now are we clear!
Greatest southern rock band ever? Thoughts, please....
Hands Down... Not just the Southern Rock genre, but to me the very definition of Rock N' Roll. You have to be a southerner to be able to play with such soul and feeling these guys had.
best southern rock band then and NOW
Timeless, the definition of Southern Rock
GREATEST OF ALL. NO DOUBT
Would have to put the Allman Brothers on the same level! Both crazy good!
🎉❤ I was fortunate to see them at winterland and their last concert in 77 at Oakland Coliseum they were awesome
Lucky you I had tickets for Madison square garden playing with Ted nugent. We lost them 3 weeks before that.
Rest In Peace Gary Rossington and thanks 🙏 for the music.
A great JJ Cale tune.....
Truth! And LS did the BEST version of it!
@@2kosher Cale version : more beautiful and pure
More edge here
Most people don’t know this is a j.j. Cale song. He and my oldest brother were good friends
JJ Cale is true legend
My personal favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd tune!
Pales in comparison to the original, I kid you not.
Mine too its KICK ASS!!!!!!
Your favorite Lynyrd Cover!! Hell of a cover band
You kidding me Skynyrd did it way better then JJ Cale.
Awesome well loved from Australia
Quite possibly the best live jamming band in history.
Rod Stewart and The Faces and Humble Pie could hold their own with these boys!
Can’t forget The Allman Brothers Band as well,I saw them all
Bud they good but you need to listen to the Allman Brothers
Santana Allman brothers tucker boys and skynard

The South rose again during that era and conquered. Best music ever!
They all quit school and said they were going to be a famous band and that set the stage for some of the best music ever and they changed the way music was done 👍🎉
this song gets my blood pumping and grabbing gears and rolling smoke in my Kenworth log truck. I even have LYNYRD SKYNYRD Painted on the hood.
Ron's dad Lacy was Truck driving man from their song of the same name
Gator33able good taste!
I could fall in love with u gator
I had never fully appreciated Steve Gaines' guitar playing until watching this. Just awesome! And EVERYONE was 100% on point! Best I've ever seen of Skynyrd!
znogypogy .
Steve Gaines was in a league of his own.
Love Steve Gaines , ❤😯
Certainly one of the greatest bands to see live !
Best guitarists together of any band.....past or present!
You'll live forever boys.
Gary's such a great guitarist
Gary was incredible add Ronnie Allen Stevie all the mules they owed it all back then
Gary Rossington made that Les Paul wail. 🤙🏼
Gary just made it look effortless! He knew how to make that Les Paul tell a story!
67 years old and still rockin to this amazing band. Top to bottom the best ever
Musicianship in spades! No autotune BS. Just pure mastery of their craft.
Who the hell hit the dislike button on this great performance?
No camera love for Billy Powell?
tippimail1 don't think the camera man knew the difference between a guitar or piano , your right ,terrible! . Hope he didn't get paid !
tippimail1 who ..ever ..it..
.was. .don't....know ..kick ass. Southern. Rock. The. Boys. From. .Jacksonville .fla
Agreed, This song spotlight's Billy's piano and not one camera shot of him.
tippimail1, maybe you answered your first question with the second question.
Agree with you mate, not even on the solo 😑
i am so glad i grew up on this. I am southern born and i love my south! Skynyrd is still the greatest Southern rock band ever!
I have always loved Skynyrd and Southern rock since I was 11 years old, and I'm 49 now. I am a damn Yankee by birth, but always have been a rebel at heart! :)
Suzee Q.
Indeed this jam is Epic!!
Mark Selin
Where were you born?
What do ya mean by rebel - ?
I grew up in Dixie and this was the preferred type of music. Class of 76
William Cason you rite
My first and only yuckupon band New levis jeans she couldn'thold here drinking Evansville,IN in Roberts St.in1 1976
O original nunca morre !!!LYNYRD SKYNYRD forever 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Golden music, never going down in value and no more to be found.
They were called the 3 guitar army !
Gary is often just flawless on the guitar
He's the most underrated of all the guitarists in the band. I wouldn't flat out call him the best but he's certainly every bit as good as Ed or Allen or Steve, in his own way. He was probably the most solid player in the band, and personally he's my biggest influence and the main reason I started playing guitar in the first place. Always been a huge fan of Gary!
Gary has great feel and style.
Comparing Gary, Allen, and Steve is like comparing Emeralds, Rubies, and Diamonds.
Brian Lewis you left out Ed King
GARYKICKEDITOFF
turned 60 last week and this sounds as good today at 60 as it did when i was 14 one of the best southern rock bands ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is one of my favorites by them, just love the piano!
Love this video, makes me feel I was there.. NOBODY ROCKS LIKE SKYNYRD. EVER !
STANLEY M fuck yeah bro
I seen them in 1976 with the Outlaws at Dayton Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio on this Tour. Best Concert that I've ever been to~👍💯
Great band. Long live Lynyrd Skynyrd !!
They did that one when blues guitarist Steve Gaines joined the band and replaced Ed King shortly after this show
Just saw a live version, guitar duals galore drums keeping things at a pretty zippy clip. They had their Southern Rock thing down.
them boys can play! sounds down home. beautiful
God I miss these days !! great music
totally agree
ditto - they were the best times of my life
Peter Rech me too
Zipora Linzer wish I could go back way back
I thought it was cool Skynyrd was willing to play at a 3000 seat venue
Ronnie died in 77 so he wouldn't be able to comprehend 2016 back then but i wonder how he would feel if he knew people by the millions are still loving his voice..My guess is he wouldn't believe it
i think your guess would be correct
Trev Mac
He wouldnt believe we were watching him on a telephone....
love him still
he'd take his music back.
Ain't no changes in me.
