Summary:
After years of life on the road and with their role models, the Allman Brothers Band, struggling to survive the deaths of two of its most distinctively talented members, today Lynyrd Skynyrd has become the quintessential Southern Rock band. Under the leadership of frontman and primary songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, the group's melodic lyric driven ballads and power driven hard rockers would catapult the group into one of the most popular touring bands in the world. The group's distinctive guitar attack, combined with an overtly defiant and rebellious attitude, gave them a cultural identity that would help make songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" into anthems of American rock music and staples of FM radio right up to the present day.
Headlining a bill that also featured the Outlaws, this Winterland recording captures Lynyrd Skynyrd following the release of their fourth album, Gimme Back My Bullets. This was during a transitional phase for the band, following the departure of guitarist Ed King, but prior to his replacement, Steve Gaines, coming on board. The band was carrying on as a six-piece unit, augmented by the Honkettes on backing vocals.
This is an interesting time to hear the band live, as their trademark three-guitar attack was reduced by one guitar, leaving more room for keyboardist Billy Powell. On the ballads, like "Tuesdays Gone" and the pre-jam verses of "Freebird," Powell displays great creativity and expands the keyboard's role in these songs.
Otherwise, the band rocks as hard as ever, with a good selection of their most popular songs, sampling a bit from all four of their studio albums. The group's defiant Southern swagger, combined with an infectious guitar and piano driven groove, creates an irresistible combination that resonated far beyond the Southern states. Two of the standouts on this show are both well chosen covers, which the band redefines as their own; J.J. Cale's "Call Me The Breeze" and Jimmy Rogers' "T For Texas." Both of these are rearranged in classic Skynyrd style, with the latter closing the set and clearly displaying the root sound of the band at its best.
The audience demands an encore and the band obliges with a monumental "Free Bird." It begins as a plaintive slow ballad, with Van Zant's distinctively sad vocals over the melodic keyboard playing of Powell and delicate slide guitar ornamentation from Rossington. However, it is the second section, which becomes an up-tempo guitar boogie, that really hits home. Here the guitarists cut loose to create one of the most distinctive solos of all time. Rossington and Collins turn this section into a soaring jam that also features impressive melodic bass playing from Wilkeson and furious keyboards from Powell. Following a brief reprise of the song, they turn on a dime back into the groove of the jam before bringing it to a climactic close.
"Free Bird," more often than not, sarcastically, would become the most requested song of all time. For musicians, this inevitable request has become so tiresome, that the act of requesting it has become universally known as "the mantra of the moron." Still, this only goes to prove just how deeply this song has permeated American culture and is a testament to its enduring popularity, making it one of the true landmark rock songs of twentieth century music. - Hudba

The fact that it sounds this good, Live, close to 5 decades later now. Says everything that needs to be said. This was a band. This was talent, and skill, and performance, on full display. Imagine if you will alternating opening bands.
Skynyrd tours with the Allmans hmmm mmm I bet Ronnie wouldn’t love opening for anyone. To be fair it is the Allman brothers you’re talking about
Allen Collins is the most underrated guitarist of all time.
Yes... he is.

Everyone has their favorites. It is all subjective. Gary Rossington said that Steve Gaines was the best.

Allen Collin's best solo. He owned that song and Gary did a good job of supporting that.
This is 100% talent , no bullshit

No joke. Hard for the youngers to understand magnitude of these guys. Still heartbreaking.
"I've seen a lot of people who thought they were cool, but then again Lord I've seen a lot of fools." This is a great line from this song that has a lot of truth to it.

Allen Collins was definitely underrated. He was awesome 😎😎😎
Nice to meet you too!

Allen Collins solo on this song is just as relevant as it was back in 76.
Ronnie is my all time favourite vocal, Steve Gaines is one of the best guitarist that ever was. But I should admit, Allen Collins is the one who defines Lynyrd Skynyrd's sound!

Man, truer words never been spoken,,,, Great song...Collins rips on the guitar and wawa pedal. Truly an under rated guitar player. With Rossington and then Gaines, the best for as long as they were, R.I.P. ALL THE BAND
This song!!!! The guitars are all freaking on spot! And no matter what you think of him, Artimus is on spot keeping them tight!
Artimus was a good guy... he could describe a situation with perfect wording... even though some stories were a little embelished.. its all good.
Man that clip from Oakland play freebird. Sick bad bad better than studio version. 🍄☮️✌️
Artimus was a very dear friend to Ronnie and Judy ruined everything. She is a blood sucking vampire and actually in Jan of 20 21 moved ( for the 2nd time) Ronnie's grave, " Melody and I were never happy about the spot he was in" so he was moved away from his parents and oldest daughter Tammy's plots- to an isolated area in same cemetery, the new grave 10 feet away from what she called a "peaceful lake"- it's a black moldy pond that looks like stagnant water. She is a VIPER
Perfection but I could say that about many of Skynyrd's songs. What a gift to mankind.

On the studio version, where Ronnie says “I know, I know, I know” and it fades out to the guitar. That for some reason gives me goosebumps, the way they recorded that intrigues me.
I like that part too
Plus Collin's clean wah soloing so emotional

Alan Collins played his guitar solos, the same exact way every time……they say that is almost unheard of ❤❤❤
Allen Collins was electrifying great guitarist he gave lynyrd skynyrd that special sound.
Gary and Allen on guitar. Love this version of the band. They had an attitude and edge like they had to prove themselves every night. Think they were at their very best and the addition of Steve Gaines later on made them what could have been the best band ever to grace a stage.
Steve Gaines was phenomenal

Out of all the great guitarists there is nothing like the sight of Allan Collins playing deep in the neck delivering his unique style of playing. My pick for the best of the greatest guitarists.

Ed King was great! Smart south californian hippie as a contrast
You just can't top this band.... they were just so fkn talented in every way...nobody can do this shit but them..this is the greatest band ever!
This music has aged like fine wine. And now we know. They may have been the greatest band the south ever saw. As great as the ABB. Allen Collins , Ed King and Gary Rossington. Electric guitars played with SOUTHERN accents. 💙
They SMOKE the ABB....I Love Dickey Betts tho.
They were the best rock n roll band than anyone else and Allen Collins was a dam good guitar player that didn't get the recognition he deserved. God bless these guys
Allen shreds in this song. Killer
Allen Collins , we love you and miss you , he will always be one if not the greatest guitarist , who over lived !
R.I.P. Gary Rossington
( 04.12.1951.- 05.03.2023.)
was an American musician and songwriter. He is best know as a founding member of Southern rock band
Lynyrd Skynyrd, in which he played lead and rhythm guitar. He was also the last living founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Rossington was also a founding member
of the Rossington Collins Band, along
with former bandmate Allen Collins.
God how I love/ admire Allen Collins ......
His solo's are so emotional..... 🌟

Do these people in the audience even realize how lucky they were?? Wow!
@Mark Cianfarani Same for me when I first saw Marshall Tucker in Tampa Stadium, opened for the Doobies. Doobies sucked compared to MTB. I think most of us wanted Marshall Tucker to come back out and throw the Doobies off the stage. Way over rated band (the Doobies)

It would be hard to have three lead guitarist in a van, and all of them be on key every time, but Skynyrd did it. ❤❤❤
I can’t think of a better band than this
This is such a mesmerizing performance. The engineer who was at the controls that night absolutely nailed it. You can hear every instrument perfectly. Billy and the piano keys come in clear. The Honkettes are crisp and at the same level as Ronnie. He is a puzzle. So tough yet so gentle almost. It’s still so sad that they had no idea what fate had in store for them. What a loss. Who knows what further greatness they would have achieved. All time great group! ❤ 🙏

If you don’t get absolutely fired up listening to Skynyrd, there’s no rock in your soul! They had the perfect blend of rock, R&B, rockabilly, country, blues, and a touch of jazz. The ultimate group.
Like others have mentioned here, to me Allen Collins is a guitar great -- often not mentioned, but still was influential, and we see evidence of why that is, here on this video. He was, in a sense, the epitome of American blues rock playing (Hendrix was another universe) -- you hear a little bit of Clapton influence, a lot of Kossoff influence, biting pentatonic riffs and some down home Southern-ness in his playing, all delivered expertly and with a lot of drive. And he wrote some great tracks, including this one. And how this band either developed or found so many great musicians... It was amazing.
Man talkin holy grail here now, Allan Collins rip brother, icon, legend, etc
That's some of the best guitar playing I have ever heard.
20October1977. The day OUR music died. I will be 63 in September by the way. Grew up in Atlanta from 1971 to 1989. Everyone played Atlanta during that time. The magical 70's....

So underrated, so powerful, so thankful to get to see this live footage of the originals!
The Skynyrd rock story may be the most tragic ever! Watch an hour or two of Lynyrd Skynyrd live videos from the '70s and you'll be a fan almost instantaneously. The legendary talent on stage is among the best you will ever see of any live performance. I always knew and respected the band but really had no idea how great they really were. And I hate to take anything whatsoever away from the obvious great talent of the guitarists, drummer and bassists, but Ronnie Van Zant was truly a once in a lifetime lead singer, song writer, band leader and frontman. One of the worst losses in Rock and Roll history that seems to be sorely overlooked.
