    Dude! I just got a Sunburst Miata out of luck and was recommended to restore it by other Miata owners. I’ve been searching for restoration info but ended up finding your channel look for a way to properly jack up my car to change the brakes 😂 your channel is a Godsend man!

      Do the fuel filter. I guarantee the previous owner neglected it and you'll notice a massive difference. Especially if you're overheating, this is probably why.

    If you are going to use ramps as that extra layer of protection maybe it would be a good idea to build a chock-like structure on the top of the ramp (using those holes) so the car would not roll down the ramps in a disaster scenario. All just extra extra protection but pretty easy to do.

    Absolutely what I was looking for. I’m a complete beginner when it comes to car repairs etc. I’m a car person but not a mechanic. This video was completely what I was looking for since I had no idea where the lift points were for the miata. However I don’t think the jack stands should be on the frame at the very ends, not on the ribbed part of the body.

    Recommend some slotted rubber boots for the top of the jack stands when using the pinch welds.Have you ever tried putting the stands parallel to the pinch weld behind it? So many different opinions.

The car looks like it's rock solid and look how high it is! I was crawling under the car with just enough room and scared it will fall on me and stuff. I'm gonna try these tips. Thanks!

    RennStands are a great way to jack the car up by the pinch welds, and also support the car at the same time. Don't need to jack up in one place, and then find another place to place the jack stand. They are pricier than jack stands, but how much is your life worth? Quick Jack would be the ultimate if you don't have space for a lift. Would make it a bit tricky to do things like a clutch swap, as you can't access the car from the side.

    • @RestorationForBeginners
      @RestorationForBeginners  Před 3 lety +1

      for sure. I sold my quickjacks to a buddy of mine thinking that I was going to put in a two post lift in the garage, but I decided to hold off on that. Quickjacks are great though.
      But there's nothing wrong with a good set of jack stands! Just take a little more effort to use.

    • @BoCarlson
      @BoCarlson Před rokem +2

      Ya and then they don't recommend the groove style stands which most people recommend if you're going to support it by the ridge. They also don't mention that the pads behind the ridge are reinforced for 4 point lift jacks. If a jack stand punches through those points the car is rotten.

    Literally every floor jack is a long-reach jack. Twist the handle counter clockwise, tilt to the ground, and then rotate it clockwise. The jack should reach practically to the middle of the car. More important is a low profile jack if the car is lowered. No need to spend 250 on the Daytona, the 50 dollar lo-pro works just fine. Cheers!

    2:50 "close to their limits"
    What? A Miata weighs 2500 pounds, or 1 1/4 tons. Maybe 3000 at the most with a roll cage and a full tank of gas. Using 4 jack stands @ 2 tons each gives 8 tons of capacity, which isn't even to mention the safety factor of 2:1 or more that jack stands have (which is to say, the stand is rated for 2 tons but it is designed to take 4 tons without failure). In what universe does this even remotely come close to being "close to their limit"? 4 jack stands @ 2 tons each could safely hold a ford F350 with an extended bed and cab!

  • @dlg5485
    @dlg5485 Před 2 lety

    It certainly wouldn't hurt anything, but if you're not going to be working back there, why bother with it. I'd just place them at whichever end you're working under.

    This is a bad video man. A lot this advice is wrong. Don't jack on the frame rails at all. Most importantly, don't put stands on the pinchweld. They go behind the pinch on the rippled part. Don't put your backup stands on the sill either.

  • @lukasrydelius6174
    @lukasrydelius6174 Před 2 lety +1

    "don't want to use jacks stands close to their limit"
    so you have 2 X 2-ton Jacks stands for the rear half of the car. The car, as you said is 1.5 tons. So you have (1/4 X 1.5 tons =) 0.375 tons on a 2-ton jack stand that was likely designed with a 2x safety factor.....Are you even thinking any more?
    Like why not just line the entire underside of the car with a wall of jack stands while the car is on a lift, and suspended from a crane while you work in a pit under the car? Cause, you know, SAFETY!!! You heard of stories where people incorrectly used/setup jack stands, got hurt or killed because of it, and now jack stands are unreliable? This is so asinine. Sorry dude, it just is. It's not the object (jack stands), but how they were used/setup.
    And also, If the ramps are more reliable than the jack stands....why bother with the jacks stands? Just use the ramps.
    Chocking the wheels on top of E-brake, on top of putting it in gear. Holly redundancy batman, might as well build a brick wall behind the car, and put wall mounted tow straps pulling in all directions on the car to keep it from moving as well..
    There's safe, and then there's dumb...the shit in this video is dumb.

    • @wanderingmercurymarauder761

      Honestly this video shows a very reasonable and smart amount of redundancy. It’s not like putting your car in gear is hard to do…
      If you don’t back up the stand with ramps you could also just keep the floor jack in position.
      Plus bigger jack stands are just generally easier to work with even if the capacity is overkill.
      All it takes a freak earthquake or some failed weld to kill you. Sure it’s unlikely but you still want to prevent it if you can.
