Typical run: months/years of prep and thousands of dollars of car mods + spotters and people willing to take a hit.
This guy: What if I just, like, gun it a lot?
It makes me think of my stupid idea that would never work that I thought of when I first discovered rallies like that. The whole point of the rally is to get from point A to point B as fast as possible with as few tickets/arrests as possible right? So what would happen if you just took a reliable, bone stock sedan or something like that. Average about 100mph, and if the cops catch wind of the rally, you'll theoretically slide right by as the cops focus their attention on the supercars around you.
@@tylercady3985 that's what a lot of people did tbh. iirc Richard Rawlings did most of the early gumball runs in a pickup.
An extended fuel tank and a suspension that would handle the weight probably would've done it. I like his style; just keep going and don't look back. That strategy was only really viable during the early days of COVID thanks to the low traffic, otherwise you're eventually going to get stuck and the cops are gonna catch up. As for the "can't outrun the radio" thing... think about how fast you clear through a state when you're going that fast. Even a helicopter or one of those little Cessna 172s they fly for aerial speed enforcement can't keep up with a car going 160+
@@tylercady3985 a Cannonball run isn't a rally. Some runs that have lots of preparation will employ spotter cars or even offer cash to people willing to take one for the team as a decoy.

If it was just the night in jail, I wouldn't have an issue, but when you bailed out you'd still have to return on your court date to the shithole state that is Missouri, and your car would have been impounded, and you'd eventually get crushed by the court for a massive fine or more jail time. I'd believe it. I did 130 to work every morning for months and never got stopped. Even got tagged a couple times and just slowed down to 80(still 20 over)
Facts. I've never driven so blatantly fast without traffic around. Now it's back to defensive driving watching out for idiots again
I moved to Germany in part so I could go fast without being deemed a criminal by the state. Bought a manual N55 135i that's good for up to 180mph / 300kph on the autobahn. Unrestricted autobahn section is a 10min drive from my place in multiple directions.
How do you lock eyes going that fast?

As a Missourian. I'm pretty sure the college town is off of highway 70 and is exactly 1 hour and thirty minutes from the St. Louis area and the cops are aggressive against people who do double the speed limit. As much as state troopers patrol interstate 70 in Missouri I'm amazed you made it pass the St. Charles area.
And Troop C definitely doesn’t mess around around St Charles
70 hasn’t been too bad since COVID, I have seen a decline in state patrol presence across the board, but if/when you get caught they don’t hold back.

This guy just might be "the son of..."
Truckers have always done that side by side thing 🤣 "Imma pass this guy! At 0.5 mph faster than he's going..." 😑
some western states have signage/laws against truckers doing that...still a prob from my experience
good ol' Semi Wars
depends on who's problem.....heh heh heh
They are still dicks, but it's usually the guy on the right being a dick more, and not just tapping his brakes a couple seconds to let the other truck pass. Most company owned trucks have limiters and/or automatic reporting so the drivers can't go above a set limit. You get two limited trucks with speedos that are quarter a mile per hour out of sync, and you end up with a pair of trucks taking days to pass.
All that aside, why is it even an issue for someone that is happy to go 80-100 MPH over the limit? Just pass the truck on the shoulder and be done with it if you obviously don't care about a reckless driving ticket.
Elefantrennen. The Germans have a word for it.

Should of went till you ran out of fuel then tell the cops the accelerator got stuck and ask for free gas.
🤣🤣🤣
*should have
The contraction is "should've," which sounds like "should of" but it's misleading.
The Quik trip where he pulled over is used by law enforcement in that town as a staging area when waiting for calls and for breaks. It is centrally located between two major highways and in the middle of the city, so this guy drove right to them! Always at least 2 Sheriff or police there, also it's one of the only gas stations open super late.
He also says the city is poor, but the city he stopped in has more millionaires per capita than KC or STL, because of the disproportionate number of hospitals and universities for the size. I'm only mentioning this to show people there recognize an R8, it's not a little farm town. They also have a large and active local car club. :)
In short, if he took a left when he got off the highway or literally went anywhere else he wouldn't have had any trouble.

I'm doing 120mph from the get-go all the way to Phoenix, AZ stopping only once in Blyth for gas. Story of a cannonball attempt straight into an ad for insurance... amazing
lol this was so good! I can only imagine David throughout this lol
I'm digging the cannonball stories.
Casual viewers: I'm sure I could do what they do. How hard is it go fast across the country?
This guy's attempt is how I think a causal viewer's attempt would go.
No. Most would be dead. Serious accident or in jail after attempting to run
@@nickabel8279 not really. Driving fast in a straight line on an interstate is not dangerous

Awesome story!! You picked the perfect exit to escape!!
"I'll do this without any prep."
"I'll just speed by the cops at 160."

I can’t imagine averaging 160. One things for sure my ass would have went to jail. Well played glad it worked out.
