I've been an Interpreter for the Deaf for 40 years. I am impressed that Trevor Noah was so insightful about the impact of this fake interpreter. All the Deaf people in my circle IMMEDIATELY identified that as fake sign language and were so disappointed to not have the opportunity to know what Obama ACTUALLY said.

As a Brazilian I'm happy that he got so far to learn to speak a sentence in Portuguese! And most of all, he knew that Brazilians talk Portuguese haha. Most gringos think we speak Spanish like most of our neighbours. I think his humor is respectful and well thought, he is explaining very well his South African culture and making people interested about it. I wish that there was a Brazilian humorist that expressed him(her)self well in English so s/he could share our rich culture with the world.

FYI most of interpreters profit huge by interpreting for the Deaf and they don’t give back to the community. Few do. Average interpreters earn around $120,000/year. While the average Deaf person eats $35,000.
And the governing interpreting organization called RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) oppresses the Deaf by denying them equal governance within this organization. There are Deaf interpreters and we have to label ourselves as Certified Deaf Interpreters. While the hearing interpreters don’t need to call themselves certified hearing interpreters. Worse what? During most of their meetings they refused to sign. They prefer to speak. How can they oppress Deaf people while making fortunes off us Deaf people.
Please don’t misunderstand me. I have met many wonderful interpreters in my life. Yet they make a small percentage of genuine individuals who cares and gives back to the community. The majority just in for the quick buck.
No Deaf No interpreters. Few interpreters do appreciate and involve within the Deaf communities.

I'm a sign language interpreter in the US. Dude, this was hilarious! I about died when you covered your eyes and said, "I'm not listening." For real, Deaf people do some variation of that all the time. It's rude, but they do it if they're mad or don't like you.
And for those people who will inevitably get offended by this, just know that Deaf people make jokes about themselves all the time. It's part of their rich culture of storytelling. You can laugh about disabilities. It's ok, so long as it's in good fun.

I'm not deaf, but "hard of hearing" (I think that's how you say it in English). I gotta say, thank you. I completely agree with the dude you said you talked with. You can laugh about disabilities. As long as you don't humiliate or try to portray disabled people as inferior, everything should be allowed.
Most of us (I am also friend with many deaf people, had to go to a special school twice a week during my childhood, and know people with autism and things like these) love it. Laugh about it. Don't mock it, but laugh about it. We are like everyone else. We are human, and seeing people get offended for us can get annoying. It's like segregation, like they see us as something so fragile we must be protected at all costs, they prevent us from having fun, and being able to laugh about something hard, reminding us even more that people like them don't view us as normal, as any other people.
The only thing with humour based on disabilities is to not make only these jokes. If all of your jokes are based on disabled people, it can get annoying and look like you really focus too much on it. But if you laugh about everything (as the guy you mimed said, white, black, short, tall,...), then we understand that you see us as a part of mankind, that you see us like any "normal" (as in the norm, a disability being anormal biologicaly) individual.
I want to thank the guy from the paralympic team, and also you. Being able to laugh about my disability makes me feel like anyone else, like nothing is forbidden to me

As a person who is legally blind in one eye and totally blind in the other I love this.

For those who don't know, the sign language interpreter's name is spelled Thamsanqa Jantjies. Also, when Trevor repeatedly pauses in the middle of a speech, he is mimicking the then-president Jacob Zuma, who is well-known for constantly pausing and slowing down in the middle of speeches.

I’ve had to change careers at age 50 because I’ve become hard of hearing and this video is a hilarious release from all the seriousness! Thank you, Mr. Noah.

Cicero Progontus Thanks! My previous career was call center customer service representative. (Kinda’ hard to succeed at a phone job career when you can’t hear the callers! 😅) ... I just finished my first bachelors degree, in “Internet & Web Development”. So, now I’m working with my state’s Voc. Rehab. to get a job in Web Design, Web Development, or UX Design/Research.
