This is what cycles of abuse cause. The grandma abused the mom and aunt, the mom instead of being a parent to her daughter was extremely permissive and let her get away with anything until the daughter was running the house. Her parents didn’t love her! It was so sad to see. They wanted to protect their reputation as good parents, and they didn’t want to deal with conflict so they let her run wild This movies was so frustrating because so often we see evil kids like this with terrible parents. It was an entertaining 90s movie at least.

This movie goes so much deeper than an "out of control" child. Between the mother's drinking problem, loneliness, and insatiable need for validation, she raised her daughter to be her best friend and makes her kids feel guilty when they're not enough to fill the void from her own mother. Understandably the daughter would have tons of resentment and unaddressed rage. She was raised without having to be accountable for anything she does. Father was detached until it was already too late. Son holding everyone's secrets and feels responsible for keep the family together so takes on his mother and grandmother's way of coping. If you don't address your trauma your kids will most certainly be paying for it later.

One aspect of this film horrified me - when she threatened to falsely accuse her father of attempted rape and glibly said that the authorities would believe her. She was evil. I don’t know if I could even love her anymore. I don’t care how angry she was or what the reasons were. I don’t care if her young age prompted her to say foolish things. She crossed a big line.
After getting over my first shock, I would explain the consequences to her (if she would even listen). She would be taken away and placed in a foster home. She would jeopardize her father’s ability to earn a living, so there would be no more fancy clothes for her. The house would probably have to be sold if her father’s income was insufficient to pay for it. She did not have the right to blithely ruin all of their lives. This might sound cruel, but she needs to know the gravity of a vicious lie.
I don’t know if I would even want her in the house when she reaches age 18 . . .

    • @MarianPerera-ye8be
      @MarianPerera-ye8be Před 11 měsíci +38

Absolutely agree. I think the most intelligent response from the parents would be to explain the consequences and then offer to call the police themselves so that she can make her accusation right then and there to the authorities, and so the police can take her for rape testing, counseling, making an official statement, etc. I'll bet she would have backed down immediately. See how she acted when the police actually did show up? Not a peep out of her. She did as she was told, because ultimately she was a bully only with the people who were terrified of her.
So that's what her parents should have done. Instead, they quickly started walking back the consequences of her behavior (by returning her stereo), and the seriousness of threatening to falsely accuse someone of rape never came up again.

I never behaved like that growing up though I did have my moments of rebellion. But that look on her mother's face when she didn't want to watch the rest of the movie with her mother made me feel bad. I think of the times my parents did make an effort to just spend time with me. In my misguided teen to early 20's rebellious stage I rejected them. Now I am 47 years old. My parents have both departed this world. I'd give anything to spend time with them watching a movie, going out to eat, shopping. Anything. You never realize what you have until it's gone. You don't have the maturity to realize who is in your life, who is in your corner & who loves you unconditionally until they are gone. Then it's too late. All you have are the memories of those kind souls looking at you with sad faces when you reject their invitations to spend time with you.

Everybody saying "the daughter needed to get smacked" dont realize thats exactly what started this awful cycle. The grandmother was physically and emotionally abusive. So the mom tried to over compensate by being her daughters friend or bestie instead of a mother. This cycle continues when you cant deal with your trauma and do better when you know better. This cycle was started by the grandmother or someone before her and continued by the mother and then Deena herself. The whole family is an absolute mess and needs alot of therapy and time to be decent at best. Alcoholism will destroy the best people as well. Addiction is a bandaid to the deepest of pain.

I have to disagree....and agree with you. Smacking someone is very different than deliberate, constant physical abuse. I was very seldom smacked or spanked as a child, yet when it occurred I remembered what I did wrong! Deena was never disciplined, physically or non. Thus this is what happens. .Alcoholism was somewhat of a factor, but far from all of it. The dad didn't want to be a parent either & is also responsible. I've seen this movie several times. It is a cautionary tale of parents have to parent and not be friends until that child is adult! These parents had their own issues that weren't dealt with until the daughter was out of control and hurting them. The son was drinking to cope with home issues he had no control over! Both parents have kind of checked out as a means to cope! Finally the authorities stepped in to bring reality to these parents!

Well said! I think the part where the mom brings pizza to the daughter and says can't you say thank you?
That right there is so relatable to almost everyone's lives. The mom was complete opposite of her mom and yet here is her daughter who has been treated beyond well and can't comprehend the pain and neglect her mom had!!😢
It's a masterpiece, I am trying to get off drinking myself but I come to this movie from time to time
My dad was a cop and though I had a dad in my life I feel like I don't know him much. I give my kid the opposite of what I had especially that night when I drove my dad home because he was too drunk and I worked 2 shifts that day and he said I'm a horrible son, he never loved me, I said I needed you my superman my daddy, he looked at me and said you idiot, got out the car and slammed the door on me leaving me there.
Anyway, when people say Jesus Christ isn't real, I say he's the only one that keeps me going!!
I love my life, my family and I have an incredible testimony to share!

A prime example of severe family dysfunction caused by Mother Hunger. Alcohol is not to blame here - both the grandmother, mother, and son uses alcohol merely as coping mechanisms to deal with their pain and to suppress negative emotions. Deena's coping mechanism becomes the boyfriend and sex. The father/husband's coping mechanism becomes his work in the basement. Deena's acting out, aggression, skipping school and lying are a very loud scream for help and love from a healthy mother - not an alcoholic mother who thinks of her as a best friend - which is a clear example of unhealthy enmeshment often seen between dysfunctional mothers and wounded daughters. The original wound (trauma) is Mother Hunger, which then branches into dysfunction, dissociation, enmeshment, and addiction. No one is to blame here because they are simply remodeling the behaviour which was modeled to them. Gabor Mate states that we cannot blame people for simply wanting their pain to go away. However, everyone has a responsibility to heal themselves and will be held accountable for their choices. People don't know what they don't know. If we don't heal what hurt us, we'll bleed on people who didn't cut us - something which is expressed in this movie through three generations of unhealed trauma.

Where did you get your degree in Psychology and Sociology? I made it half way through this movie, and I am appalled and sickened. The mother and son needs help with alcoholism, the father with avoidance issues. That Deena girl is way beyond out of control. She's violent, beligerant, irresponsible and manic. And that boyfriend only throws fuel on the fire. He needs the heave ho! There's programs and medication that can help rehabilitate her, but if she refuses, there are other, less hospitable places that will incarcerate her and keep her from hurting anyone else. Face it, some people just can't be helped, no matter what you do, and they get worse as they get older. No one should be subjected to physical and emotional abuse on any level. Period. Glad to see in the end they all got the help they need as a family.

Fast forward many years later, Swank has two academy awards now. Great movie, I’ve watched it several times. Ps- Dying To Belong was a good one too.

I have an 18 and 19 year old and never have they even raised their voices let alone hit me. She’s 15 and allowed to come and go as she pleases no boundaries. Respect there is none. To let her have a boyfriend and go out and about whenever she likes and they have never met him. Can’t help but think there have never been boundaries in that house.
These Parents don’t work as a team and that’s always going to end badly. Right in the beginning father said he was going somewhere on the weekend and thought he would take the son. Mother gets in the car and says your father is going away this weekend why don’t you and I do something! Kid has tantrum shoves mother breaks stuff and doesn’t apologise her mother does then buys her a ton of clothes she trying to buy her she should have taken those clothes back. They are pathetic. Reaping what they have sown. The mother is pathetic

Basically the father is just taking up space and paying the bills. Never stood up for the the mother of his kids. He was just as bad as the mom. Mom was all on her own dealing with it.

The dad seemed to just not care enough to speak up or try to find a solution when both mother and daughter get into disputes like he’s still a parent and part of both of their lives.. if no solution or closure ever seem to come out of their arguments, another parent should try to step in as a last resort…

Even Deena is stuggling to understand - "Why did I hit her? Why did I grab that knife, where does that come from?" Then the drunk phone call from her mom, who doesn't understand either why their relationship is damaged, who thinks she's tried so hard but doesn't understand her alcoholism (the toxic, passive-aggressive "I don't want you to say something you don't mean...I'm sorry I called"), her seeking validation from her child instead of being a parent because she had a terrible mother...it's a cycle and was glad to see it broken at the end.

Thank you!! My mom is Jamaican and my dad is Haitian. They would have buried me deep if I would have hit my mom in her face like that.
