This Swiss team is really strong, the NHL players like Hischier, Meier, Kukan, Moser... all are insane. I hope this team can really make a special thing in this tournament... What a game that was !
Honestly the other non NHL players are not bad either. Swiss hockey in general is good.
swiss hockey has changed significantly that's for sure. I am latvian hockey fan myself, yet since I've started to watch hockey, Switzerland's team switched from regular weaklings to potential elites imo

They already are for the last 10 years when they scored the first silver medal ;-) Also, SC Bern has a larger audience than any other club in Europe for almost two decades, saying everything about the significance of ice hockey in Switzerland!
@@daserdferkel7388 Switzerland is small but densely populated from Lake Geneva to Lake Constance. They have had massive immigration in the last 60 years or so and almost doubled their population to nearly 9 million people (the biggest growth of any Western nation in %). Finland has a population of only 5.5. mio and they are the best hockey nation along with Canada and Sweden. Tradition has a lot to do with how good these countries are.

@@therevolution91 thank you as well. You need to bear in mind that preparatory games don't usually mean anything. We DEMOLISHED Sweden 9-3 just 2 weeks before the championships and lost 3-5 already in the group to them.
We also managed to lose to Austria - absolutely negative performance. Then we stomped Latvia and stopped playing for the rest of the match. If we were to play Switzerland now it all depends on our motivation I think - the game can go either way any match already, we're not anymore "overall better hockey team" so that you would expect us to win. No, the opposite is true - if we don't play our best, we're not going to beat Switzerland because they will always play their best, and their best is Canada-beating best.
Now it depends on the group standings - we might/should beat USA and thus we should play Canada in quarters. Don't worry then :D
And to the style of hockey - yes, I absolutely love our hockey style, not so much how we carry it out. Actually Slovakia currently plays maybe even "Czechier" hockey than we do, but this style is common for us, Russia and Slovakia, we like to play aesthetically pleasing, elegant hockey - which might work best, but we need to convert the chances created to goals. This ineffectivity is costing Slovakia right now a lot, in their game against Canada they had like 6 chances that any Canadian would turn into a goal. They did not.
@@ariarion137 my take on that would be Canada/Russia - top 2, then Sweden, Finland and Czech Republic (historically). Right now, Switzerland is stronger than Czech Republic imho. USA depends - they have the players to rival Canada, but they usually don't send them to "inferior" competitions (in their mind) like World Championships or Olympic Games (lol). If World Cup of hockey is played and NHL stops for that occassion, the top countries will be Canada, Russia, USA, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Czech Republic (in this order I'd say). Slovakia is also historically very strong but just like Czech Republic it's in a decline for last few years.

The funny thing is I'm not surprised. The Swiss has been great VS Canada in resent years. At the same time it's awesome to see that they are making progress in these match ups. They have gone from having a defensive approach, to actually taking more control of the game. Impressive indeed!

Well done Switzerland. For the last few years Canada has been struggling alot with Switzerland. They lost to them in 2017, 2018 (0,4 seconds away from losing in 2019) and now.
Most of them train and play in Canada been training people to beat us for many years now in the name of growing hockey around the world.

Switzerland is underrated. I think it's because of their rapid development into a strong hockey country. From the point of view of a Czech fan, I'd expect beating Switzerland like 6-0 in 2001. Nowadays I can't really even expect to win against them - our hockey went into a bit of a decline while Switzerland truly became a great hockey country. They deserve huge respect.

I played Ice Hockey in Switzerland till the Junior Major league.. so 14 years of Hockey.. My brother played for the national league as a Goalie and was in front of Berra and Genonni in th U18 Swiss team.. so Hockey is a big part of my life and I was good at it... just chose the party and music life instead of focusing on Hockey.. but still love it so much..

The Swiss league is of very good level of hockey, for years and years now!!! Hockey is the most loved sport in Switzerland, also adding that it is the best payed league (or one of the best) in Europe!!
The arenas are always packed and the matches and fans are out of this world!! You should come and try it for yourself nothing to envy to the NHL!!

Switzerland is like how Finland was at the dawn of 90's, and how Slovakia was at the dawn of 2000's. Just waiting for the first win, as it draws near...
The question is will they stay consistently good in the future years? Some key Swiss players are getting old. Slovakia used to be very good 20 years ago but has fallen alot in the last decade (due to the succesful generation getting old). Only now we seem to have a bright future with the new young players.
The Swiss have been at this level for the last 30 years. They look this good when all the good players are busy elsewhere

@@pascalschacher6971 I think the start of the 2nd period was basically theirs. But then came the foul and PP goal by Hischier, then Canada realised "wait, we're not 10 times better, we're not better!" and since that moment I think Swiss were better for the rest of the game.
If this was all Canada could get for this tournament they should have sent the Junior team instead.

Congrats to Swiss: they played the better game. Canada has a weak defence, weak penalty kill, can't win the boards, gives up the blueline, can't check in their zone, too many stray shots on the other net, etc. The talent is there, but not the cohesion. Canada will reach 1/4 finals, but 1/2 finals are a big question mark.
It's basically an AHL team, don't expect any more than this

Yeah there's a couple. Most are AHL players that get call-ups from the NHL once in a while. The Goalie's are back up goalies, you'd think they would play up to that level though but alas that is why they are call-ups
