- Video tutorial on how to tie a Thief Knot. This is different than a Reef Knot because the free ends are on opposite sides of each other. This is used to connect two ends of rope together and isn't a very stable knot.

Had a shoe string break, and after looking at six videos this is the only one that was actually any good.
Thank you :)
If you want a permanent knot for two ends of equal size rope try a double fisherman or a splice.
Good job, an accurate representation that works! I looked up several videos before hand and found that yours was the only one simple enough for me to do quickly.
Thank you so much!
Simple and easy, thanks!
thanks alot. great help concise video. zero waffling

4DIYers you’ve a bell clicking subscriber in me sir! Ah you seriously saved me with this their knot, I do aerations for a company called TruGreen, and the strap I was using to tie the machine down, snapped. This tutorial absolutely saved me having to make a very embarrassing call which would have resulted in a very angry boss! So again, I thank you very sincerely!!!
Awesome, thank you so much for the support and happy to help!
Best knots are easy to tie and just as easy to untie.
Thanks tough guy, cool knot!
No problem, happy to help!
OMG, this helped me a lot, thanks dude a lot
Good video. But this knot sucks for pulling on each side of the rope. It comes undone with bit of effort. But thumbs up for straight to the point, easy to follow.
Thank you. This knot isn't intended to tie two pieces of rope together. It was used by sailors to determine if someone tried to tamper with their belongings. You'll want a square or reef knot instead.
@@4DIYers thanks... I actually tried using another one. The water knot and that worked great. I don't know if that is same as reef knot since I only watched one time and cant' remember. But I kind of dig knowing how to use these. I should have stayed in boy scouts longer as a kid lol
perfect guide,thx a lot
No problem!
Very good explanation. Curious, how secure is it ?
And is it hard to undo after putting a lot of weight on it?
Very simple and reliable knot. I used it many times as closing knot for lops on djembe drum ring. It gets under very high tension after it is tuned. It has never failed, untied and with little efford it can be also untied if needed.
hi there, Im trying to find a knot that is strong and you tie at the ends of 1 rope?? can you suggest one?
straight to the point, just how i like it
What's the purpose of this knot? When pulled, it comes apart
Wow!! Good job! Very good 👍 instructional, video was excellent also.
Thank you very much!
Saved me with this thank you so much! My girlfriend is now my WIFE because I impressed her with this thief knot! You could say I, *stole* her heart 😝
Thank you!
No problem :)
Knot Roulette. Black, and Red tape great ideal.
this is the best knot tut i have found but it would be better if a quick epo on what this not is good for
It is good for connecting two separate lines that are going to be under pressure maybe like on a bale
Thank you so much.
Great clip. How strong/slip resistant is it?
Shadow I thought so. Didn’t seem to be strong or slip resistant
@@Eyesofthasouth I learned about it as basically being a failed square knot that can slip which is telling
Awesome thanks.
No problem!
Good video 👍. Can this knot be removed after it is pulled tight and job is completed? Thanks 👍
Thank you! Actually I have a better explanation of this knot here czcams.com/video/VEaJZ6fqo3Q/video.html This knot is only intended to show if someone tampered with something, it shouldn't be used for connecting two ropes. Instead a reef knot should be used czcams.com/video/3Fijg1SWHH4/video.html
Perect video.
Thank you!
I have learned
ty man!
No problem and don't forget to subscribe :)
Now this one could be useful!
looks like the square knot
+levi ashby Similar, but it is not. A thief knot has the working end on opposite sides. A square knot on the other hand has the working end on the same side.
+4DIYers yes, thank you. My father explained it to me, but Thanks for helping clear it up
How to untie it?
Rose Broussard If you find it does lock up, twist the leading ends and then push towards the knot and this will allow it to loosen.
Is this good for connecting ropes?
No. Use a sheet bend. youtube it
I'm terrible with knots. Can anyone explain to me the reason you'd want to use this knot over the square/reef knot?
This was basically a trick knot so sailors could protect their belongs and determine if it was tampered with. I have actually started a new channel just specially for knots with their history/uses czcams.com/video/VEaJZ6fqo3Q/video.html
I did not think this showed an understanding of why this knot is so called ,and how it is made ,because from your video you don't show that this is made with both ends of the same bit of rope
Is that also a square knot?
Nope, a square knot is also known as a reef knot.
I like it.
I’m gonna start using this knot every time we pull electrical cable.
Will it work on pull string tho??🤔
and now... TADAH! bottlecap chain
Thank you I wanted to learn that knot just because it's pretty. But why is it called a thief knot? 🤔
Thank you! It was used by sailors to determine if someone tampered with their belongs. The knot which is replaces and is the proper version is the reef/square knot.
In my boy scout days that was a reef knot.
Nope, this is slightly different than a reef knot.
Thx 😃
Happy to help :)
Back in the day they called that a square knot.
A square knot has the ends on the same side, the thief knot is the same but has the ends on opposite sides so you can tell if it's been untied and retied as a square knot.
And your knot came untied and something bad happened. All because you can't tell the difference.
I hope no one was hurt.
(Probably a fella who don't know why his shoes won't stay tied.)
Is it also called a granny knot, hard to untie?
With a granny knot, the working ends will be on the same side. This knot can jam at times.
Isn’t this a square knot?
Nope, that would be also referred to as a reef knot too. This is an imitation reef/square knot which was used to determine if something was tampered with.
not very secure. Just comes apart
It's not supposed to be. The thief knot was used by sailors to determine if someone tampered with their belongings. What you want is a reef or square knot.
Didn't work for me, chief :( Ropes keep slipping back out
Shipmate | Revengefull Trout ...don’t pull on the ends only when securing
This is as the name intends, only used to see if someone tampers with it. You'll want a reef knot instead to connect two ropes.
Ummmmm so a square knot? Make sure u tie a half hitch on each side cause this knot will slip.
No, a square not is different. Also have a video on that.
Ummm reef knot
A reef knot is different, it has the two working ends on the same side.
whats the point in this knot? when the whole thing is pulled it falls apart
It was meant as a "security knot" to tell when someone tampered with a sailer's belongings.
ahhh ok thanks, makes sense. I hope no one uses this for tying anything important xD, or atleast checks the strength first
what a stupid knot. It pulls right apart.
It's supposed to pull apart. It was intended just as the name, to tell if someone tampers with a sailor's bag.
@@4DIYers Well that explains everything! Well done then.
Thank you. If you're looking for a knot that holds which is similar to this, a square knot is a good option.
@@4DIYers Square knot is a widowmaker! watch this video...czcams.com/video/gMC3ZQE5LzI/video.html I would go with the double fisherman's knot. czcams.com/video/O6oJwedcb18/video.html
