DIY: Tying A Thief Knot

  • Video tutorial on how to tie a Thief Knot. This is different than a Reef Knot because the free ends are on opposite sides of each other. This is used to connect two ends of rope together and isn't a very stable knot.

      yeah this really helped. i was making a unicorn horn with flowers and ears for my sis and i needed to tie two rubber bands together for it.

      If you want a permanent knot for two ends of equal size rope try a double fisherman or a splice.

      4DIYers you’ve a bell clicking subscriber in me sir! Ah you seriously saved me with this their knot, I do aerations for a company called TruGreen, and the strap I was using to tie the machine down, snapped. This tutorial absolutely saved me having to make a very embarrassing call which would have resulted in a very angry boss! So again, I thank you very sincerely!!!

    Good video. But this knot sucks for pulling on each side of the rope. It comes undone with bit of effort. But thumbs up for straight to the point, easy to follow.

      Thank you. This knot isn't intended to tie two pieces of rope together. It was used by sailors to determine if someone tried to tamper with their belongings. You'll want a square or reef knot instead.

      @@4DIYers thanks... I actually tried using another one. The water knot and that worked great. I don't know if that is same as reef knot since I only watched one time and cant' remember. But I kind of dig knowing how to use these. I should have stayed in boy scouts longer as a kid lol

    Very good explanation. Curious, how secure is it ?
    And is it hard to undo after putting a lot of weight on it?

      Very simple and reliable knot. I used it many times as closing knot for lops on djembe drum ring. It gets under very high tension after it is tuned. It has never failed, untied and with little efford it can be also untied if needed.

      +levi ashby Similar, but it is not. A thief knot has the working end on opposite sides. A square knot on the other hand has the working end on the same side.

      Rose Broussard If you find it does lock up, twist the leading ends and then push towards the knot and this will allow it to loosen.

      Thank you! It was used by sailors to determine if someone tampered with their belongs. The knot which is replaces and is the proper version is the reef/square knot.

      A square knot has the ends on the same side, the thief knot is the same but has the ends on opposite sides so you can tell if it's been untied and retied as a square knot.

      With a granny knot, the working ends will be on the same side. This knot can jam at times.

      Nope, that would be also referred to as a reef knot too. This is an imitation reef/square knot which was used to determine if something was tampered with.

      This is as the name intends, only used to see if someone tampers with it. You'll want a reef knot instead to connect two ropes.

      It was meant as a "security knot" to tell when someone tampered with a sailer's belongings.
