Great knot videos Jason. Would love to see a video/series on how to use these knots in real world situations, particularly everyday uses. Would be great to get ideas for the best knots to use in specific circumstances. A series for bushcraft/outdoor uses would also be great.
normally, you would have already run into a moment in your past when you were tying a rope, and needed 1 of those knots...Because you have not needed to learn any of the basic knots until now, you probably don't really need to know any of these in your life. I started needing these knots when I was 12 years old.
@@night_watch720 This is a false assumption. The way it works is, you have a need for knot but we don't know which knot to use. For example, I need to secure my bike rack to the tow hook on my car so the rack doesn't flop from side to side. You think because I don't know which knot to use that I don't need it? What a stupid assumption!
Good list, those are definitely the critical knots to learn because once these are mastered all other knots are easy to learn. As an aside once I learned various knots I realized it was easy for me to learn different neck tie knots.

Enjoyed a Sunday morning (re)learning some of the knots that I should to know for everyday activity. Inspired by the need to tie taut line to secure my unlatched back car hatch from bouncing while hauling a table that extended 4 inches past the end of my interior space on my SUV. I took the opportunity to refresh on all 8 recommended not just the full hitch knot that fit the immediate need. Thanks!
Great tips. I'm a veteran paratrooper. And that's some of the best I've ever seen ESPECIALLY THE SWISS HARNESS. I've Always Had issues with my knot tying skills. why I depend on the good old figure eight knot.. It's the easiest to tie SUBSCRIBED as of now!.

Great video. One of the things I have learned is to keep tying knots or you will forget. The bowline knot is one I knew I would forget. Maybe that's why I will never forget it. I've tied it thousands of times.

Excellent video! Clear, logical, extremely well thought out with great pacing (not too fast, not too slow). Really appreciate the work you put into making this. I agree 100% with your choices. I am a very enthusiastic knot beginner and I already know and love all of these knots but it's nice to have a confirmation that I'm on the "right track". It's great that you explain the best uses for the knots, and emphasize their advantages and disadvantages (easy to tie, easy to undo, can slip if unloaded, etc.). One thing my dad taught me as a kid, was how to shorten a length of rope, and how it comes undone very easily. Also very useful to know!

Regarding the bowline, it’s definitely taught a standard way, with “the rabbit running behind the tree “ but I’d encourage anyone to try to learn to tie it both ways. With an overhand and r an underhand loop. If you do an underhand, you only need to have the rabbit run in front…

I really like the figure 8 know because it can be slightly altered to do so many things and it doesn’t bind as much as some knots. I have replaced almost all overhand knots with the figure 8. If I need a loop at the end, figure 8. Plus more.

I'm searching for knot but I can't find it anywhere. I'd like to make an auto locking knot to join 2 ropes, for example, tying a shoelace so I can make it tight and when I release it, it keeps tight
A continuation of your list would include the Alpine butterfly, the constrictor knot, the fisherman's knot, and the Trucker's Hitch. I would hate to not know any of those last four.

Thanks for the video. I was a boyscout when I was younger ( dropped out before making eagle scout unfortunately) But Knot tying was one of my favorite skills so It is nice to refresh my memory especially on the classes and purposes of each knot. I subscribed to your channel and I will be checking out some other videos to see what else I can learn. I think the knot my brother tried to teach me was a monkeys paw, I struggled with that one. He was a rigger in the air force so he definitely had me beat on knot tying skills.

Great video Jason! Wondering what kind of knot you would use when tying rope around a cover like tarp around a bbq or something like that. Would a Bowline work here?
I’d probably use either a trucker’s hitch or a Canadian Jam Knot, something that creates an adjustable loop. The bowline is fixed so you can’t adjust the tension
I have an ocarina I wanna secure to a cord . Which knot or video of yours would you recommend for me to make sure it's secure. I'm working with a cord that gives me two ends that run about 2 to 3 inches long

Jason, do research.. probably in Asia. Find the actual knot for bamboo scaffolding. Plenty of Western versions online, probably used on Survivor,... but never the real knot is shown. The gauntlet has been thrown down. By the way... I had a guy on a Chinese building site show me one day.... so I know. Cheers. G

I also learned these and other in Scouts back in the day and use most of them quite regularly in day to day living. Althoughtnthe sheet bend isn't one I have used in awhile. It amazes me how many people have never learned even the simplest knots. A lot of them live by, 'if you can't tie knots...tie lots. Then pray it doesn't let go under load...then use a rope wrench (pocket knife) to "untie" it. lol

I use had to tow an old K car home with the help from a co-worker and his service truck, We got the car to my yard and he took his jack knife out to cut the rope free...I looked at him and aasked what he was going to do with the knife. He said oh you'll never get that untied. I guess he had never heard of the bowline before. lol

Knots shown are standard “should know” for most all rope work. That said, I take issue with the “slip knot” in that the slip should occur on the standing side of the line. As demonstrated, the “working” or “bitter end” of the rope can slip through the loop and the knot will fail. If the standing end is used to create the loop it will bind. That’s assuming there is enough tail to cinch the knot to binding state. An overhand or figure 8 stopper knot could be used to ensure the bitter end does not slide through when loading. Just my .02
Yes, exactly. These are the 8 knots everyone should know. With regards to teh Slip knot, a slip knot doesn't have a stopper knot on it because it's main role is as a stopper knot itself. The purpose is to be a quick release overhand knot and after understanding the role of the slip knot the concept of a quick release can be applied in other knots.

No, no and no again! The Square Knot must NOT(!!!) be used as a bend!!! Cliffort Ashley asserts that more people have probably died from using the Square Knot as a bend than from all other knots combined. The Square Knot is a reef knot, hence its second name Reef Knot. Good bends are the Right-Hand Sheet Bend, the Full Carrick Bend, the Ashley Bend and especially the Zeppelin Bend. Note that the Left-Hand Sheet Bend, where the loose ends are on different sides, is insecure, which is often disregarded. This video shows the correct version of the Sheet Bend.
Hmmm... while the square knot can be used as a bend, it's not reliable in that roll and should be avoided. Especially if life, injury or property will be at risk.
It is however a good binding/reef knot.
I'm aware that the Scouts have suggested it as a bend for ages & far as I know continue to do so to this day... why I couldn't tell you. As I'm sure many would agree, they're big on teaching knots, but very vague when it comes to pros/cons/hazards & proper use of each.

While working on elevated tanks I used 3 half hitches quite a bit it never fails if tied securely😊

I think you got the Sheet bend wrong.. it's not ideally for tying to ropes of different sizes, its for ropes if similar sizes and types. The Double Sheet bend is. Great video btw. Thanks!

We need a cloud based platform for all knots videos that the knowledge would not get lost if yt ect would vanish or similar, like the bitcoin is in the cloud and no one can destroy this inet based system, but only for knot videos.
I not a expert that's why I can't say how the technical stuff works.
I think if every one would use ther old smartphone or what ever to allow storage for knot videos that would be decentralized, I guess over a app that would be similar to the bitcoin inet platform. 🤔
