Informative vid though. I've just made my first monkey fist using a 3/4 inch ball bearing. It's not bad for a first attempt, but the only way is up 🙂

I was looking for a bolen knot because that's how I heard the arborist videos pronounce it, only to find a Bow Line knot. I'm guessing to tie the ends onto a recurve bow string originally?

What's the advantage versus a normal bowline?

I just bought a new inflatable dinghy. The painter line tied to the bow D-ring that came with it was tied with a Noose knot. I was thinking of going with a bowline, or anchor knot. I think I will stick with the Noose, it is tidy and does not use much line )since the painter line is already short to avoid propeller tangles); much shorter and a crowded dinghy dock is hard with short line. The line is the special floating line and I want to stay with it, the line is approx 1/2 inch dia. and the Noose with a 3 inch tag end seems to hold really well to the small D ring. I figure since it came that way from the factory, it is a good knot for intended use.

The cow hitch looks very like what I (a climber) call a Larks head knot?

Jam knot is faster an easier, good enough for most application of tying stuff down

Cow hitch vs. girth hitch? They're the same knot, it's our perspective that's different. You may as well describe them as; 'this is a left knot because it's on the left and this is a right knot, because it's on the right.'

At 1:10 of your video. both knots are exactly the same. One is just the view from the other side. Why a different name?

Dude this is a lark's head, and it doesn't matter how you turn it, it's still the same knot.

My scoutmaster had us learn to do it with one hand under the assumption that we might use it while off a cliff holding on a branch with the other hand !

I like the speed at which you use your hands - the steps become more visible and less "magic".

Every time I try this my ascender is too far away to reach. Must only work with an old tibloc. Still searching for a reliable easy, not sketchy way to pass a knot.

how long is this rope? why not say the length?

The only variation i see is that it has the base of bowline pulled through the loop. So you use it when you need to band something together and atill be able to easily untie the rope, compared to straight knot loop.

The large carabiner is the best type of weight to throw over a branch. It has only smooth surfaces so is less likely to get stuck up in the tree.
