These used to be called Steak Canadian back in the day. Real Steak Canadian is supposed to be prime steak very thinly sliced but the versions sold in Iceland, Farmfoods etc. were basically identical to these. Haven't seen them in a few years though.
I remember my mum getting Steak Canadians from our local newsagents back in the early 70's. He used to get them from somewhere and sell them to his favourite customers. Like you said they were frozen thin slices of real steak, lovely on a sandwich or barm cake.
I remember steak canadians, they were initially sold in bars that did food on the side. They were served on a bun with lots of fried onions. I suspect they were of a better quality back in the day. Personally I wouldn't be tempted to try today's version.
The leftover tomahawk steak looks great. That mechanically reclaimed sheet of mush looked like a cork tile, only slightly less appetising - not for me that one!!
"It's definitely edible" - they'll have to put that in the adverts😀 I've never seen anything like this before and looks like one to give a miss. Thanks for the information Gareth!👍👍👍
Loved these as a kid back in the '80s. Fry them up with some onion and stick it on a oven bottom muffin. Cheap, quick, and perfect for soaking up beer.
I used to love these steak Canadians also between some white bread and a good swiping of lurpak as if they weren’t fatty enough. Went down well after a load of cheap skol or marksman lager. Great blast from the past, thanks!
Back in the 80's we had something similar, called Express Steaks! Used to like them in a Sandwich with Heinz Sandwich Spread. Great for the "Munchies" 😉
Gareth you took one for the team. Once we got to connective tissue you had me reaching for the cushion to hide behind. How these companies can successfully sell that muck as food is beyond me.
Wow almost 60 thousand subscribers. An incredible achievement in such a short space of time mate. Out of all the food reviewers on CZcams, you are by far the best, most down to earth and genuine and I can relate to you more than anyone else as I am from Northern England myself (Manchester). Looking forward to you reaching 100,000 which I am sure you will do before the end of 2023. I can imagine you becoming a celebrity and appearing on some food programmes on tv like James Martin in the near future. Keep up the good work Gareth. Oh and by the way, have you ever thought of investing in a brand new kitchen ? You are always saying that your kitchen is old and needs upgrading.
Originally had these in the USA called Steak Um’s in the 80’s, they had paper in between each slice which made it easier to remove from each other. They were nice over there but they are $10 - $12 a box now and they were frozen also.
Steak Um's yes they were called that here in Canada, we would buy them when we lived in Ontario, from M&M meats, delicious, as you say each frozen slice was separated by a sliver of paper.
Good honest review. I tried them a few years back from farmfoods called minute steaks. I agree with your take on them. Not a lot of taste, and the sinew and additives put you off.
These reviews are the equivalent of craving a cheeseburger after eating at a fine dining restaurant; not only are they truly satisfying but this bald bloke’s sense of humor is immense!
This takes me back to my student days in the late 80’s in Sheffield. We bought something very similar to this from Iceland and loved it in a sandwich. I’m going to have to buy some for old times sake!
HI Gareth, give the Asda just essentials Cooking Bacon a go, it's about 90p and you get a massive slab , basically off cuts , but the thickness varies and some are like gammon steak, I air fryer it , hope your all keeping well
Wow these bring back memories. We used to have these at home when I was a kid in the early 90s, separated by wax sheets I think. Used to have steak sandwiches for supper all the time.
Brought back memories of nipping into a pub years ago and getting these minute steaks between 2 slices of toast (cut diagonally) fried onions on it, and salad and chips on the side. From memory they tasted good tbh but they look a bit rum from the packet. Another good vid thanks pal.
Ohh man ❤ didn't even know these were still available 👍🏻 I really like these , Our local cash & carry used to sell big boxes of these , theirs were called Steakwich . Off to Iceland tomorrow 👍🏻👍🏻 thanks Gareth.
Hi Gareth. Now that's interesting. Never seen or heard of this before. Yes it does look like corned beef and pork. Sort of Spam looking too. I reckon this would be great for a pitta pocket bread kebab. We have fresh Sizzle Steaks here in Australia. Very thinly sliced steak that cooks 30 seconds a side M/R in a hot pan or bbq. Great for steak sarnies. I hope you enjoyed the leftover Tomahawk. Cheers Gareth 🤤👍😀
Cheers John yes that Tomahawk steak did 4 meals in total so was worth it. Yes not keen on this really, lacked in flavour, but strange. I normally like that sort of rubbish too. Cheers pal how your well down under 👇👍👍
Very retro Gareth, the local sandwich shops and pubs used to sell these years ago, sometimes they would add slices of mushrooms or onions cooked in the same pan as the “meat” and served in a split T-cake( or whatever you want to call it). Strangely this is the only thing (touch wood), that I have ever caught food poisoning from (purchased from a chain food store, which microwaved the meat to reheat it. I ate it as I returned to my car and by the time I got home I didn’t know which way to approach the toilet, led to me having two weeks off sick).
Used to make steak Canadians when I worked as a cook in the great Northern back in the mid 80s and they were very popular, great review as always, stay safe and well always mate.
As previously said they were called steak Canadians, we always had them in the freezer for a quick sandwich. Back then probably late 80s early 90s, they were really quite nice lots of beef flavour and oinion . I don't know what they have done but I would not feed them to my dog. A real shame in my opinion as I did really enjoy them.
Back in the 80s there were these steaks called Dale Steaks - frozen thin meat exactly like that and you put them in the frying pan frozen and they cooked in like 2 minutes - anyway I bloody loved them as a kid and you know what - I’m gonna go to Iceland and get me some and relive my childhood
Hah, your Iceland must be a lot bigger than my Iceland local to me because all we have are the basics. Wish they had grub like this. Cheers for the review. 'Reformed' is okay. 😋
I have had similar in the past, probably the same stuff repackaged. Im gonna pick some of those Iceland chunky hash browns up this weekend, they looked really good. 😂😂
re the large frozen sausages from iceland (£2 for 8) , i cooked them in the oven and they just seemed to go a darker pink and didnt like getting any "proper" colour and everyone of them split and gave off at least 1 teaspoon of fat per banger (possibly closer to 2) taste wise they wernt bad a tad bland so would be ideal for hot dog buns and a shed loads of sauces.
I just wondered if you re-use the aluminium trays? I wash them and save them for when I'm doing a big roast and they're really useful for things like stuffing. Also as paint trays as they fit a smaller paint roller.
When i was a kid our local pub did a thing called a steakwich . Slightly toasted white bread with thin sliced beef with mushrooms and onions. I am pretty sure the chef bought the beef ready sliced . They were definately not mixed with pork , conective tissue and refomed !! Me and my bruv would munch them in the pub garden with a ginger beer !! They were delicious I am not sure I like the look of these but maybe washed down with a special brew or a scrumpy jack !!!
Hi Gareth a brilliant review, I have to admit that i will be giving them a miss lol on the good side i added two packs of the pukka microwave pie's for my delivery on Thursday 😋😋🍻🙏
🤣🤣🤣🤣I was thinking sub as in standard. ( Honestly this was my first thought before you started with the discription) Probably the most honest publicity that I have ever seen.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Good afternoon 😁. Hope you are all well 🤞. I still eat these when I can find them with fried onions and garlic mayo, I know these as Steakwiches. They are great in a crusty French stick 👍👍. keep up the great work 👌
This was a taste of my childhood! Back in the late 70s as kids we were taken to a pub in the village of Davenham near Northwich with mum & dad. They used to serve these in a bap with fried onion and they cost about 30p at the time. Loved them! Oddly enough I noticed them in the through the door brochure for Farmfoods last week and actually went just to get some of these! I recreated the bap and dare I say dipped the top in the fat and added a bit of English mustard. I hate to admit it but I really enjoyed it, what is it about fat that we like? - It certainly isn't something to eat regularly - Don't want a cardiac arrest ;-) Whist I was in Farmfoods I also got a giant size pork schnitzel. It is XXL and claims to be restaurant quality. Not tried it yet - perhaps you could review these?
I used to love these "'Steak Canadians" back in the 80's.. They went perfectly between two slices of bread with few slices of Onion and a bit of brown sauce... :)
@3:43 I remember something similar back in the 80's/90's they were layered in between greaseproof paper...They used to cook in about a minute in a frying pan...Express steaks or minute steaks I think they were called...If you overcooked them they went like cardboard...🤣
It looks like the minuet stakes you used to get years ago. We used to drop them in chip pan for 30 seconds and they were done. I must try these next few days. The minuet stakes had greseproofed paper between each sheet of meat. Looks like these need the same.
I actually ate these growing up, there was other ones that had like a kebab meat flavour, my dad used to make up Kebabs using them, pitta bread too, I was in mothers house other day an spotted these in her freezer, so cooked them up on sandwiches, nothing like ones from past, shrink so so much
They used to be called steak canadians years ago, used to love these after a good night in the pub, quick and easy on a slice of bread, ohhh lovely, lol.
I remember around 1982 when there was something almost identical called Steak Canadian though is was just beef rather than beef/pork and there was about 20 slices in a box with the sheets of paper in between and from what I remember they were a bit thinner than the ones you have there. Never saw them for many, many years until around 2008/2009 when I noticed Asda had their version and were called Sandwich Steaks and I started buying them again but Asda discontinued them after the horsemeat scandal in early 2013 and I haven't seen them since.
Geeez, Gareth ! ..... What a Rigmarole for a few Slices of the Stuff ! It was a Military operation 😂 You have got the Patience of a Saint 😂😉👏 ..... Top review as always, Sir. Thank you.
I used to have a cafe way back in early 90s, we used to sell something very similar but they were called, Steak Canadians, we sold them on a toasted bread cake with fried egg and melted cheese, naughty but nice!!
And I thought Hall’s only did the Scottish breakfast staples of square sausage, black pudding, fruit pudding, they might even do scotch pies. I like to make my own steak sandwiches but with a bit of proper steak. But seeing the reformed steak with connective tissue I would have opted for real corned beef itself.
This makes me think of how similar this is made to Smoked sausage and what its made of. Smoked sausage is just about all connective tissue just pressure blasted off the carcass, and added flavouring, It is said that they are inedible without the added flavouring, and no one blinks an eye at what its made of, and they just taste great
Gaza I used to work for steak express and believe it or not this was my line. These are made purely out of beef hearts!! There's not one bit of sirloin etc etc... it put me right off them after knowing what goes in them !! Just thought I'd pipe up and let you all know. Keep up the good work mate, love your vids.
Blast from the past Gareth. My kids used to love these when they were younger. The youngest being 37 now. But to tell you the truth dont think they would eat them now. I also remember that they were easy to separate as the had a piece of greaseproof paper between each one. Keep up the good work.
I have not seen these steaks for years this brings back memories of the 1990s tea time very nice steak a thin layer between two slices of bread you can't go wrong
I remember similar 'steaks' in the 80s, forget the name of them, you fried them for exactly 60 seconds; in the frying pan for 40 secs, flip 'em over and fry for 20 secs - boom sorted! My mother refused to cook them like that, she fried them for about 5 minutes, you could've soled your shoes with them!! 🤣🤣
@@Siobhan_Shivaun My mother was the exact opposite with frying food - once it was no longer pink (in the case of sausages and beefburgers) or the chips were soft, they were cooked - anything darker than that - “They’re too well done for me” (her way of saying that they’re burnt!).
@@arthurvasey my mother over cooked almost everything, she would fry fish fingers till you could repair potholes with them, and veg would be booked to mush 🥴 Now I do my own cooking, I've discovered what food is supposed to taste like!! 😂
They had a different brand in farm foods until last year. They had the wax paper between slices. The brand you tried are now also sold in Farm foods and quite honestly, to call them shit insults shit. They are made from pink slime and mechanically recovered meat. The old style steak Canadienne were useful when I worked in my shed as I could cook one with a blow torch to make a sarnie. I'd still buy the decent version of these as long as they had paper separators as otherwise to they are just mush.
these were originally sold as "steak canadiens" or "minute steaks" but they did had sellophane separating each slice ,thus making it easy to separate, unlike the problem you had. Maybe the older ways are best!!!!
Not a stranger to these but are best with toast and butter and spicy pickle, the grease left for frying eggs in! You used to get these in Farmfoods 30 odd year ago and i think they were called new york strip steaks.
I've seen something similar, though that was just shaped ground beef without all the...eh..."questionable" bits in it! As for a new pan, you can't go wrong with a good cast iron one so long as you treat it right (though I confess, I'm partial to stainless steel ones without any non-stick or such. Use any utensil in it, scrub it with steel wool pads, chuck it in the dishwasher... simplicity itself!)
*Interesting review bald foodie guy 🙌👌👍👏🏻* I remember from my childhood there was this kind of thing and occasionally had it with fried potatoes and a tin of beans or tomatoes or spaghetti and it was nice but food back inn the late seventies and eighties was nicer than today.when the flavour was flavour
They look um nice Gaz 🤣, I remember being sat on a plane prior to take off from Gatwick to Kyiv not so long back, and I looked out of the window only to see them making a last minute repair to patch up one of the wings using one of these ‘steak’ slices
I used to buy these years ago in a 7 inch stottie/bun with fried onions, yummy with mustard and cheese on top......Great replacement for kebab meat and very cheap to make your own kebab.....Quick and easy sandwich, and well worth the money.
They're using SUBliminals on you, Gareth!😊 Blimey, it looks pretty sub-standard too! Thanks trying this so we don't have to, and giving me a laugh in the process!👍
I used to love these when I was a kid, quick hot sandwich for lunch. Saw them recently and nostalgia kicked in, oh god they were flipping awful so much grease. Never again!
Hi I’m desperate for the Halls streak express. I cannot find them in Iceland or Farmfoods. Any idea what has happened to them or where I can get them please?
If you are looking for a new frying pan (and I think you should be haha), you won't go wrong with a Heritage Ceramic pan with buckleproof steel and aluminium base. They are a bit pricey, but you hardly need to use much oil and can even fry an egg with no oil at all. Obviously, this makes the clean up job so much easier too.
Have you tried any Quorn foods Gareth ? I would like to try some but not sure if I will like it, I have to be careful what I eat that’s why I like watching your reviews. X😊
Be careful Iris, l got some Quorn nuggets to try and had to bin them, they seemed like they were made out of brick dust and cement! Linda McCartney are nice, particularly the sausages
@@nige3801 thank you for letting me know I will probably be wasting money by even trying Quorn foods by the sound of it🫤,coming on these reviews are very helpful. 🙂
The factory that produces those used to be Belchers of Prestwick until Halls took them over,I used to be their postman, the smell from the processed meat used to stick to the workers clothes and you could tell instantly when they came in for a pint after work 😂you need to try their beef olives, really tasty
Thanks everyone I couldnt remember what they were called used to buy them in Makro cash & carry. I think it was all beef no pork & not so manyspices. They were tricky to cook not too much not too little, 4 in a sandwich white bread, butter & red& brown sauce. Yummy
These used to be called Steak Canadian back in the day. Real Steak Canadian is supposed to be prime steak very thinly sliced but the versions sold in Iceland, Farmfoods etc. were basically identical to these. Haven't seen them in a few years though.

Geeez, Gareth ! ..... What a Rigmarole for a few Slices of the Stuff ! It was a Military operation 😂 You have got the Patience of a Saint 😂😉👏 ..... Top review as always, Sir. Thank you.
Haha cheers Mark
I used to have a cafe way back in early 90s, we used to sell something very similar but they were called, Steak Canadians, we sold them on a toasted bread cake with fried egg and melted cheese, naughty but nice!!
Thanks for sharing! Would like to try that.
And I thought Hall’s only did the Scottish breakfast staples of square sausage, black pudding, fruit pudding, they might even do scotch pies. I like to make my own steak sandwiches but with a bit of proper steak. But seeing the reformed steak with connective tissue I would have opted for real corned beef itself.
great with fried onions and brown sauce on toasted white bread, these date back to the 70's, 80's 90's and early 2000;s. Delish!!!
Sounds great!
Me and my dad used to go to a snooker hall when i was a kid. They made these on cobs with plastic cheese, i think they grilled them thought BOOTIFUL
Idea for a video, homemade pancakes vs pancake mix bought at the shop. 😊
Great idea!!
It reminds me of the minet steak sheets you could get years ago
This makes me think of how similar this is made to Smoked sausage and what its made of. Smoked sausage is just about all connective tissue just pressure blasted off the carcass, and added flavouring,
It is said that they are inedible without the added flavouring, and no one blinks an eye at what its made of, and they just taste great
Yes they are tasty but not these though 👍
Gaza I used to work for steak express and believe it or not this was my line.
These are made purely out of beef hearts!! There's not one bit of sirloin etc etc... it put me right off them after knowing what goes in them !! Just thought I'd pipe up and let you all know. Keep up the good work mate, love your vids.
Yes very they used to be better than these. Cheers Daza
These have been around for donkey's years use to be sold as steakwich in pubs as bar food along with scampi etc.
Blast from the past Gareth. My kids used to love these when they were younger. The youngest being 37 now. But to tell you the truth dont think they would eat them now. I also remember that they were easy to separate as the had a piece of greaseproof paper between each one. Keep up the good work.
Cheers Jean well do.
Known as minute steaks, often at roadside wagons back in the day, served in a butty with lots of onions and a big mug of tea!.....cheers Gaz
Cheers Nige
I can't believe that I used to eat these many years ago 😳.
Used to sell them at the butty shop on a barm with onions and red sauce.
@@Siobhan_Shivaun 'minute steak' very thin slices.
Just brings back memories of my mums corned beef hash made with corned beef from the twisty key tin...which are still available in most shops!
@@arthurvasey my mother over cooked almost everything, she would fry fish fingers till you could repair potholes with them, and veg would be booked to mush 🥴
Now I do my own cooking, I've discovered what food is supposed to taste like!! 😂
Loved them when I was kid -Three or four on a barm and a bit of tomato sauce 😁
They had a different brand in farm foods until last year. They had the wax paper between slices. The brand you tried are now also sold in Farm foods and quite honestly, to call them shit insults shit. They are made from pink slime and mechanically recovered meat. The old style steak Canadienne were useful when I worked in my shed as I could cook one with a blow torch to make a sarnie. I'd still buy the decent version of these as long as they had paper separators as otherwise to they are just mush.
Cheers Robert 😋👌
Hahaha....corned beef was my first thought as you slid the contents out of the cardboard sleeve....unreal! 🤣👍
You and me both!
I reckon the tomahawk steak is the better lookin value for eye candy! Lol
@@BaldFoodieGuy funny thing is...once cooked that looks just like the soles of my old leather moccasin slippers! 🤣
these were originally sold as "steak canadiens" or "minute steaks" but they did had sellophane separating each slice ,thus making it easy to separate, unlike the problem you had. Maybe the older ways are best!!!!
Cheers Gavin
I remember working in the kitchens in fords and doing these steaklets on toast they went down a storm quick sandwich that was in the seventies p.😊
Cheers pal thank you.
Looks like steak Canadian to me, probably better to have an apple for lunch, 😂 great video as usual, keep them coming!
Thanks! Will do!
*Interesting review bald foodie guy 🙌👌👍👏🏻*
I remember from my childhood there was this kind of thing and occasionally had it with fried potatoes and a tin of beans or tomatoes or spaghetti and it was nice but food back inn the late seventies and eighties was nicer than today.when the flavour was flavour
Sounds good Glenda thank you very much 😋👌👌
they were called steakwich when i was a kid ..used to have them on holiday at havens holiday camps
Do they gave any herbs. Because I was thinking about it as a Donar style meat ?
Yes me too, not like that at all unfortunately.
They look um nice Gaz 🤣, I remember being sat on a plane prior to take off from Gatwick to Kyiv not so long back, and I looked out of the window only to see them making a last minute repair to patch up one of the wings using one of these ‘steak’ slices
Thanks 👍
When I lived in Rotherham South yourshire this was called a speak Canadian and I loved it. Don't know now.
I'm also a fan of connective tissue!
I used to buy these years ago in a 7 inch stottie/bun with fried onions, yummy with mustard and cheese on top......Great replacement for kebab meat and very cheap to make your own kebab.....Quick and easy sandwich, and well worth the money.
Sounds great!
They're using SUBliminals on you, Gareth!😊 Blimey, it looks pretty sub-standard too! Thanks trying this so we don't have to, and giving me a laugh in the process!👍
You're welcome 😊
I used to get the Canadian ones and grill on a toasted sandwich with Cheese mmm
Only just started trying these and tbf I quite like these...brown sauce on a sandwich bosh!
They sold these a few years back but they called them Canadian steaks, used to eat in a pitta with some chilli.
We bought some the other week but yet to try them but the reminded me of steak Canadian we used to get, hope they taste like steak Canadian used to.
Hope you enjoy
So do I cheers
I used to love these when I was a kid, quick hot sandwich for lunch. Saw them recently and nostalgia kicked in, oh god they were flipping awful so much grease. Never again!
Hi I’m desperate for the Halls streak express. I cannot find them in Iceland or Farmfoods. Any idea what has happened to them or where I can get them please?
I've not had them since mate. Try home bargains
Can’t beat that steak slices in a sandwich after a few shandies going straight to Iceland tomorrow haha not had it for ages.
Used to love minute stake as a kid mmmmm
If you are looking for a new frying pan (and I think you should be haha), you won't go wrong with a Heritage Ceramic pan with buckleproof steel and aluminium base. They are a bit pricey, but you hardly need to use much oil and can even fry an egg with no oil at all. Obviously, this makes the clean up job so much easier too.
Cheers pal
Have you tried any Quorn foods Gareth ? I would like to try some but not sure if I will like it, I have to be careful what I eat that’s why I like watching your reviews. X😊
Cheers Iris thank you 👍
Be careful Iris, l got some Quorn nuggets to try and had to bin them, they seemed like they were made out of brick dust and cement!
Cheers Ricky
Great video pal that steak looks amazing 👏
Thanks 👍yes was good, got a few meals from the steak.
Thanks everyone I couldnt remember what they were called used to buy them in Makro cash & carry. I think it was all beef no pork & not so manyspices. They were tricky to cook not too much not too little, 4 in a sandwich white bread, butter & red& brown sauce. Yummy
Thanks for the info!
Farmfoods used to sell something similar about 15 years ago😁👍
