This video looks at why you should be running hills in your training. Even if you're aiming for a flat race you should still add hills as they are a great way to improve your running.

Excellent. Very informative and inspirational. Well done, and thank you very much Bob. P.S. I'm still "slow jogging" at 86.
I’m glad you found the video helpful! That is incredible! I hope I’m still running at 86! Keep it my friend 🙌
yet again another great video bob, i always suggest hills for the people i coach.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Hills are the way, so so good! 🙌
Great videos Bob. I'm also a fan of downhill reps. Slow up, walk even and hammer the down. Yes increases impact but strengthens quads for when u downhill in events. Just a theory but interested on ur take on this, given it will up the impact and increase injury risk.
Cheers Steve! This is interesting, it’s almost like a race simulation to create damage in the quads. The legs will adapt to it and become stronger to that stimulus which I imagine is very useful for ultras. Especially hilly ones! I’d be interested to see how the strength gain compares to uphill reps, and the risk vs reward of injury to adaptation. I think I’m gonna have to do some research 😂 I think one way of doing this would be to run these in a field where the soft ground reduces the impact however, if you’re really hitting it hard there’s a risk of stumbling and causing injury that way.
This has really got me thinking now…
How often do you do a session like this and how do you feel the day after?
@@BobThomasUltra you know me, not sure if ever followed a schedule or plan. I've done only a handful ever tbh. But more so for the above reason than thinking it isn't helpful. Smashed quads the next day for sure. Like when late stages of a race when you've run hard and smashed the downhills cos ur actually racing. Hence think its a decent piece of conditioning. Agree minimising impact you be helpful but part of me who knows nothing about physiology, wonders if the impact and shock on the quads adds to the damage of the muscle and so strengthens after rest. perhaps I'm just a sadist! Don't try it on Tuesday though!
What about hill rucking routines? I like to use 35kg backpack, my legs feel like dynamite when running few days after
Yeah that will work great! Be careful when descending with the extra load but the added weight uphill will just add to the resistance!
Gravity: Good or bad?
Definitely good!
