FIRST DRIVE: Lucid Gravity - 1,000bhp Tesla Model X Rival

  • You'll know Lucid from its ultra-spacious, slippery Air saloon, which can hit 60 in 1.9 seconds and is very probably the best-handling electric family car on sale today. 10 out of 10, no notes. So, how does the new Gravity SUV - Lucid's difficult second album - stack up?
    Well, it's a little early for a full drive (stick around for a drive of the prototype later in the video) but here's what we do know. It'll use the next generation of Lucid tiny-but mighty bespoke motors. There’s a 900-volt architecture for fast charging speeds, and it'll be able to accelerate to 60mph in less than 3.5sec in the quicker versions. Base models will start from $74k, with 'around 800bhp.' Inside there’s screens galore, and four rows of seats (sort of). All very impressive. All very Tesla, you might think. But what sets Lucid apart? Join TG’s Ollie Kew for a deep-dive into the clever thinking behind the Lucid Gravity.

    Driving my Lucid Air GT for 2 years now and I'm still in love. I can't walk away from it without turning back to look. As easy as it is on the eyes (much better in person than in photos) the best feature is still that drive experience. Having experienced real automotive engineers doing the suspension and power delivery design and tuning really shows from behind the wheel. With enormous torque, the car feels mor like a luxury V-12 than a drag-strip specialist. Sure, it has a launch mode, which is a good party trick once or twice, but really it is the smooth unending waves of power that can be called up in any mode that is genuinely addictive. Handling is quite positive and confidence building, and a bit more fun on a mountain road with the stability control dialed down a bit.
    I've gushed long enough. Go out of your way to find and drive one. It's not just another EV. Lucid is doing something truly unique and wonderful.

The stock is way down & although I charge my lucid at home the charging issues on the road are a concern. If they do not market these cars appropriately or bring down the price somewhat, I am afraid that our Lucid’s shall be worthless. Keeping my fingers crossed. 🤞🏻

    I really like the way this guy talks about the interior design, feels like he understands and actually drives a car... things that we do often while the car is moving needs to be easy to find buttons so you can keep your eyes on the road as much as possible... But things like mirror controls that you almost never do, and if you do it's often while stationarry before starting driving, doesn't need to be a button.

      Design is about tradeoffs and one trick is knowing which tradeoffs to make any why. Design will be opinionated, either way, and people will prefer different things, but a spoon that's shaped like a fork or a square basketball are objectively poor designs. I like this designer's intelligent and mostly sensible approach to interior design. If I had to make dashboard design choices I would not make the same choices as he did, I would prefer a smaller driver's dispay and a larger central display, or example, but I similarly don't like Tesla's approach of no buttons. This interior dashboard isn't perfect, but is certainly a more practical approach than Tesla have made, which seems to me to be a production-cost-cutting design pitched as a minimal design.
      There is no perfect SUV or car dashboard design for everyone. My choice would be either a small driver display or a driver HUD, with a large central display and then two metal dampened beautiful to use dual-zone (two) dials below the central display that are multi-use, and pressing them would cycle trough various features, allowing the user to quickly cycle through what they wanted and turning the dial to adjust the setting. This approach to me is somehow more physically satisfying and yet more minimal than a row of buttons like Lucid have chosen, and much better than Tesla's no-button approach.

    • @Miata822
      @Miata822 Před měsícem

      Lucid makes a genuine effort to make the driving experience pleasant and intuitive. While many controls are reached through the intuitive screen interface, anybody can get in and drive. On my Air GT the seats can be adjusted in countless ways by screen, but someone just getting in the car for the first time will find basic analog seat switches in the normal place and working in the normal way. The same is true for all the normal driving controls, but steering wheel and mirrors are screen-only, but easy to adjust without menu-surfing.

    This was a great interview and I really like Derek's responses. His design thinking and approach is very straightforward, practical and realistic and I couldn't point to a single response or design choice and be like huh, why did they do it this way. Everything was well explained and it all made practical sense to me. The obvious example of this was the physical controls vs. digital controls question and how they chose which got what. It's a shame Lucid is currently marketed towards the luxury segment buyer but it's not hard to understand why it's much easier for a smaller almost boutique brand like Lucid that isn't making hundreds of thousands of cars a year and their manufacturing costs haven't been so refined to target a higher cost to be able to make a profit.

    Glad you picked up the fact Peugeot have been using a smaller steering wheel for a while now. As a 2008 owner, it quickly becomes very natural, and a traditional steering wheel feels odd. It does look great, but I imagine it'll cost north of £100,000 and will sell in relatively small numbers.

    The best analysis I've seen of Lucid's strategy when designing their vehicles described it as basically "Let's package everything as efficiently as possible to provide the greatest amount of cabin and storage space, design the exterior to be as aerodynamic as possible, then make it look both distinctive and timeless with the wiggle room we have left. We are open to legitimately re-engineering any and every aspect of the vehicle that gets in the way of those goals." And that's why the headlights are unique to Lucid, why they re-engineered their heat pumps to make them more compact, why they re-engineered the drive units to make them more compact, and why they also spent so much effort designing their battery configurations and placement. They wanted a usable interior, an aerodynamic undercarriage design, and as much storage space as possible, so everything got designed and re-designed to make everything fit. Thus the Air, their first ever car, has the size of a Mercedes E-class, but the interior space of an S-class, and the storage capacity of an SUV. It's legitimately a marvel of engineering and packaging, plus the design does grow on you quite quickly. I didn't like the aesthetics at first, but now I'm rather fond of it. Looks vaguely retro-futuristic. Plus the interiors look great, at least as nice as they should for the price.
    I will go ahead and put this out there: I think Lucid has some of the best interior usability designs out there. The smaller steering wheel is still an eminently usable size and actually helps to mitigate the feeling of the power steering being over-boosted and excessively numb since it lowers the length of the lever you have to work with. The two glass d-pad touch inputs on the steering wheel, in conjunction with additional buttons is really about as good as you can hope for in a 'modern' interior aesthetic and provide adequate discrete input options on the steering wheel, particularly compared to Tesla. The screens, particularly the lower screen, are placed quite sensibly for user input and you still get enough physical controls to not be entirely reliant on the screen for every single thing. In short, all of the touch-points, the places where you interact with the car, are thoughtfully designed and follow trends only where it is useful rather than just trying to be cool. I really like their classy interior design choices.

    I'm in love with the Lucid Air. It's a gorgeous sedan. With the Gravity, which Lucid should have released before the Air, I find the Model X more interesting and distinctive without being outlandish like the Cybertruck. This resembles a Toyota Sienna. A vehicle where I have visceral disdain. It could be a Toyota, a Hyundai or an Audi. This is the vehicle that I've been waiting for Lucid to produce. But I don't feel drawn to it, and don't imagine this will turn many heads or seduce many people.
