    Just wanted to say thank you!!! You taught me how to prevent a runaway from my new DD I'm getting Tuesday. Hasn't ran in 7 plus years so now I know what to look for and fix. Never owned a DD but I feel so much better knowing how to keep it from running away. Thank you for taking the time to video this valuable information!

    Thanks for your videos. What's so cool about your laid back way of teaching is that all the scary mystery feels like common sense once you've explained it. I hope you will continue creating videos. Don't be afraid to show stuff like how to remove the injectors, what kind of tools to use, and where to get them. Some of the required things are mighty expensive. Service manuals go part way there, give torques and stuff, but videos are easier to visualize what's going on.
    I have a 6v92 which won't start, but from what I understand so far, given fuel and air, and enough compression, an MUI engine will almost always start. Thanks!

    They can be quite time consuming. I've had only 3 that I couldn't get freed up but they had gotten rusty where the valve cover was left off for many years. Thanks for the video.

      @@detroitgarage9430 I have a 1947 GM PD3751 that sat under trees for 50 years. The fuel jumpers on those 3 injectors had holes rusted in them and I had to vacuum out all the leaves and dirt. Believe it or not it runs. Crazy how much they can take and still run. I have some videos on my youtube channel of it.

    Thank you for all the Information on these old engine I appreciate that, I plan on getting a 3-71 that has had the valve cover off for a while, rust has accumulated on the rockers and everything is sticky but they do move a little, I was wondering what you would do to remove the surface rust on the rockers? Any help or advice from anyone is appreciated.

    • @detroitgarage9430
      @detroitgarage9430  Před 2 lety

      In the past, I've removed the rockers and injector arms and cleaned them with a wire wheel. These engines were seized, so had to be rebuilt. You could use a small wire wheel with a drill and lay cloth down to collect the rust dust, or remove the rockers etc to clean them. Thanks for watching.:)

    Maybe you covered this, but is it old engine oil caking on them that cause them to stick? And how do you keep up maintenance to prevent that? Pull em off every 100k or something? Newbie question, I know.

    • @detroitgarage9430
      @detroitgarage9430  Před 3 lety +6

      It's old diesel fuel that has dried up in the injector and turned to a varnish like consistency from being stored for 25 years. Once the injector is freed up again it will work like new. As long as the engine is used regularly and has good fuel, they won't stick. I do use a fuel conditioner from time to time to help keep the injectors working correctly.

  • @TeamTopKick
    @TeamTopKick Před 3 lety

    If you remove the injectors do you have to readjust them and everything when you reinstall them or can you just pop them back in? I want to have my Mechanical Unit Injectors tested but afraid to have to find so eone who has the tools to adjust and do the timing.

    • @detroitgarage9430
      @detroitgarage9430  Před 3 lety +3

      No, as long as you put the back in the same order they should be ok. On this engine I pulled all the injectors and put them back and the timing remained the same.

    How do you test an injector on a 1986 8.2 pincher , or do you just have to remove. Engine not run for 10 years so I put in new fuel and added injection cleaner. Drove it first time 10 miles before i added injection cleaner ,,,, now when i start engine it smokes so bad, it's scary. Going to try to run it out tomorrow. if I gauge injector return line, could that indicate injector pump not working. Also, is idle screw on Governor body

    • @detroitgarage9430
      @detroitgarage9430  Před 9 měsíci

      The best way to test the pump is to put a pressure gauge on the secondary fuel filter. Low fuel pressure will cause the engine to run rough and have low power. If it's running well, take it out for a nice long trip and see if that helps. Make sure you have clean fuel and filters.:) Idle screw should be on the governor housing. I'm not very familiar with the 8.2 as I only work on the two strokes.:) Thanks for watching.:)

    If I had a dollar for every full can of WD40 I ever owned. I'd have like $5.
    But, If I had a dollar for every can of WD-40 that ran out when I needed it most. I'd be rich by now.
    I don't know how that works but every guy knows what I am talking about.

    Newby question. I just got a 1971 Raygo roller with a Detriot 353. It smokes white a little more than I would like to see it. It's got great oil pressure and does not use oil. I been keeping my eye on the radiator fluid and is at the same level. After watching your video I'm woundering if I may have stuck injector? Would something like like that cause the white smoke? Oh I also could smell diesel in the smoke, and not a sweet smell wich would indicate antifreeze. Thank you!!

    • @detroitgarage9430
      @detroitgarage9430  Před 2 lety +1

      If it's running smooth then most likely a case of wet stacking. Run the engine with a load on it and this should go away. If the symptoms continue then it could be injectors. You could rebuild them or exchange them for new. Let me know how it works out.:) Thanks for watching.:)

    Quick question, I have a Chevrolet c70 with a set of tandems that normally weighs in at about 50,000 that was originally powered by a gutless 427 gas. would a 6v71 be better or a 6v53? Those are the only options I have at the moment

    Are stuck injectors what cause the "runaway" phenomenon in the Detroit diesels? Could you use the "misting oil" that's sprayed into gasoline engine cylinders that have sat of a while to lubricate the injector instead of wd 40?

    • @detroitgarage9430
      @detroitgarage9430  Před rokem

      Yes most of the time it's stuck injectors. The best way to prevent this is to use the engine on a regular schedule. I have Detroit's that I store and before I use them I take the valve cover off and make sure the rack is free.:) It takes a long time for injectors to stick, usually a few years of sitting. The fuel gets thick and they start to stick after time. I'm not sure about spraying misting oil, but might help.:)
