  • Fiction. First published in 1968. This english edition is 2019.
One of the most serious and somber reviews I've done about a topic that must be handled with utmost care - suicide and death. But as always, Japanese authors have the lightest touch and Yukio Mishima explores death in the most tender, light-hearted, even funny interpretation.

I just finished this. I'm in my turbulent time of my life and I was told to read this because this is Mishima's humorous works. On the first chapter, it's so dark already, but never in a million year I thought I'd laugh at that dark topic. It's dark but comedic. It's my best read of the year so far.

I can totally relate! I know what you mean by dark but comedic and there were definitely moments when it made me laugh too - which was a pleasant surprise to me. Books have a way of soothing us in our troubled times for sure. I’m glad this book helped you somehow. Take care!

Thanks! :) Enjoy the book! Definitely a unique one. It's amazing how such a serious topic is taken on by the author in almost silly context; he actually managed to make it a light read.

p.s. - I recommend ‘When Broken Glass Floats’ by Chanrithy Him, if you haven’t read it already. One of my personal favorites.

Thank you, Jonathan! :) This book had such an impact and it became a somber review without intending to, but given the subject matter, it’s not surprising. Thanks for tuning in!
