A young man, disappointed with his life, but not brave enough to commit suicide. So, instead, he creates a scheme to provoke others to kill him. The book shows the influence of opposing forces of life and death on an individual, and how one deals with it.
Mishima is considered one of the greatest Japanese writers of the 20th century, and was nominated for the Nobel Prize three times. But he lost it to his countryman Yasunari Kawabata, who became the first Japanese to win it. Perhaps this loss hurt his pride, and partly influenced his decision to commit suicide.
