As HRV enthusiasts explore its benefits, newcomers are curious. Several studies and clinical trials from different subject fields, such as diabetes, the nervous system, PTSD, cancer, autism, strokes, epilepsy, viruses, and many others, have been conducted for decades. These studies demonstrate that HRV is a powerful predictor of several health conditions, and analyzing the normal HRV range of millions of subjects can help detect health issues early.
The focus of this article is on how the average person can utilize HRV to their advantage. Let's simplify some of the complex medical jargon and answer some of the frequently asked questions about HRV.
How does HRV work? This is a complex question that requires an explanation from the beginning. HRV refers to the slight variation in an individual's heart rate, beat-to-beat, in milliseconds. The heart is not supposed to beat like a metronome, having the same exact distance between beats. This variation in heartbeat is beneficial because it indicates that the person is alive. If the heart beats like a metronome, then that's not a good sign. The time domain method calculates HRV by measuring the difference in time between the heartbeats.
Another method of extracting HRV is through the frequency domain. This method uses frequency to measure the heart's activity. The heart produces high and low frequencies, and HRV is calculated based on these frequencies. The frequency domain method is more complex and less practical than the time domain method.
In order to calculate HRV, an input signal is needed. There is no such thing as an HRV sensor. Instead, HRV is calculated using data from either a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor or an electrocardiography (EKG) signal. PPG uses an optical sensor that flashes a light through the skin and measures changes in blood volume pumped by the heart. EKG, on the other hand, measures the electrical activity of the heart directly by placing electrodes on the body.
The main difference between PPG and EKG is the sample rate, which refers to how many times per second the device is acquiring data. PPG has a lower sample rate, which means that it cannot capture rapid changes in heart rate, while EKG has a higher sample rate and can measure these changes accurately. The choice between PPG and EKG depends on the situation and the desired level of accuracy.

I just got a Fitbit charge 5 recently which used a rmssd system to measure HRV. My average After about a week of use is at 30 which is super concerning for me. I’m a 19 year old male and not currently under very much stress at all seeing as how it’s summer break for me at Uni. Im generally fit and hit cardio most days so I have no clue why my HRV is so low, super concerned about these figures right now…

Hi, do you have any video or a document that would explain step by step how to use the IOSmart Sleeve please? I am pretty much specifically interested into using this device for food intolerances and specific health issues in my practice. Thank you.

I've worn an apple watch for four years. I had a consistent 50-60 hrv for the first year. I had health issues and went on beta blockers. I jumped to 120 and averaged over 90 for two years. Came off beta blockers and immediately had a decrease to 30 average. It's been consistent 30-35 for seven months. And I don't know what to do. Waiting on a cardiologist response. 🎉

I look at mine from overnight on my Oura ring. There is an average, which is low, but spikes high. Such as an avg of 25, but a max of 65. Which is the more important number?

    I don’t understand something
My watch says my HRV is low mostly just below 50
But I found readings around 125 as well sometimes, but rarely off course.
My watch checks my HRV once a day or twice randomly
So I don’t know how much I should trust this result
I am not overweighted and quite fit
    It is just strange
If my HRV can be above hundred sometimes even 150 can I assume that is the normal?

It's difficult to say without knowing what product you are using and what their HRV scale looks like. Most products are different in the way they score HRV

@@Komodotec how can it be different when it's a mathematical calculation? the only thing that will affect the readings is how accurate it can measure your heart rate.

I have a Fitbit and I'm usually around 30. It's quite low and it concerns me but I am getting healthier and have already lost 50 pounds this year. I am hoping my healthy diet, exercise and active lifestyle will help increase that number.

That’s awesome, congratulations! My guess is that you will see results visually and on the scale first and physiological response from your body will follow suit eventually. That’s a big weight loss and internally your body is still adjusting to this new lifestyle
