I use shade cloth in august when I need to plant my fall crops in Ky. It’s in the 90’s and the cloth helps tremendously to cool the beds down. I use it again over broccoli in the spring to stop it from flowering before I get a harvest
We gardeners are going to need lots of shade cloth as each year gets hotter, to prevent blossom drop, sun scold etc
That’s a great idea. It does seem to just get hotter and hotter. It’s tough.
I use shade cloth too. My plants have survive the hot Fl summer. But they have not given me fruit. I’m hoping now when it gets cooler I start seeing more production. I’m in zone 9b.
I wish you, and other CZcams garden contentors, would post dates on their videos. I just saw you post you were on 6 week vaca, then this is video shows up, and you say “on my last video I showed how I amended my soil in the beds”. Maybe I missed it, couldn’t find it. Love your stuff because I’m new and in your area so lookin for seasonal plant info. Timing is everything. Sorry for being picky, just looking for helpful info and want to know if this was stuff I should have done two months ago, etc.
Hi. Thanks for the feedback. I filmed this the day before I left about a week and a half ago. I’ll have other videos coming out while I’m gone that I pre- recorded but those won’t be timing specific so it shouldn’t be a concern. I usually post my videos about 1-2 weeks after recording since it takes some time to do the editing and loading. The "last video" Petrina is referring to dropped 2 weeks ago, title started with "A Day in My No-Till Garden". You also have to adjust for your timing based on your own zone compared to Petrina's 9A, and she is always trying to run a little ahead to give all Floridians enough time to get their planting times right. Even though I should be following right behind her in my zone 9B garden, allowing for her editing and uploading delay, my garden is still crazy hot, and not much rain. So I keep making notes in my planner, and waiting for a bit of a break in the weather, because whatever the calendar says, I KNOW any transplants I place are likely to die right now.

There’s also helpful websites (and videos) that let you know what to plant and when in Florida. I know for me in 10A, its too hot for taters. 😂
I don’t blame you. Most CZcams gardeners don’t give specific dates. If they are posting a video put a disclaimer that this was prerecorded. Why is it so hard to do that? Hence I avoid some CZcams gardeners all together. Hey I’m on vacation but my videos are still getting posted. Voila!!!!
Oh boy! The Tromboccino is my all time favorite squash to grow and it vines like crazy. I’ve gotten 3 lb squash each from mine this year and I planted it in April so it’s held on all summer. No pest pressure whatsoever!

My mom and I both are beginner gardeners and have been basically experimenting the past three years with some successes and some failures, but we are learning! I use toilet paper rolls too! I didn't know anyone else did that! I usually use them to keep plants like lettuce seedlings off the soil and upright. For cutworms I use 7 dust! It works great and you can apply it all the way up to 2 days before harvest. I had cutworms destroy whole branches on my tomato plant which had flowers on it and after applying 7 dust there were no more of them coming to my plants even after it washed away with the rain. Unlike BT and Spinosad, bugs get poisoned when walking over it. You don't have to wait for them to take a chunk out of your plants in order for it to work. You can also make a perimeter of powder around your garden beds and sometimes that will kill the cutworms before they even enter the plant area.
You can still plant the leggy Tomatillos. Being in the tomato family, they can be buried deep to compensate for the length and they should do fine. Don't throw them away. They can still produce. I am growing purple and yellow varieties of tomatillo and I saved seeds from some green too.

Hi! Tromboncino is a fabulous c moschata species. You will have to help it a bit to climb but they are vigorous and productive! The lemon squash is actually c pepo not moschata species but it is early maturing at only 55 days so should definitely grow well for you! Great variety pics! I’m following along and am looking forward to seeing your garden grow!

I am very interested in your experiment - i am only learning myself but thought that it wouldn't work in pots as the Mycorrhizae was about the roots in the ground growing better due to the fungi system in the earth interacting with the inoculation you gave your plant. Maybe the product you are working with is different too? I love when gardeners show their good and bad experiments and you do a great job with that. : )
I’m so addicted to experimenting. I’ve learned so much doing it this way. Sometimes it’s a total fail but when it works, it’s gold!
I totallly get it when you say you dont trust direct seeded planting. Ive tried celery carrots and onions and had 0 germinations from tons of seeds. I'll have to try that cardboard trick for sure.
Figuring out when its time to plant things in 10a Florida has been challenging. Every website tells me different times 🤣
I know it’s tough down there. The trick I use is when the nights dip into the 70s and the days are consistently in the low 90s, you can get started. Or start inside and move outside after about 4 weeks. The calendars are great starting points but seasons change and your specific garden is unique so it takes trial and error.
The splitting onions are the best. I use them in place of garlic. Even after a long period in the fridge, the bulbs will revive in the soil within a week or so. 😊🍄🌼

What variety of pea was that? And do you ever save seeds from your pea plants, or is it just easier to start with fresh seeds (I know you have 300 for this year, but I mean in general)?
It definitely was a busy couple of weeks, lol. It really only took a couple days for the sunn hemp to dry out. It was crazy. I do normally save my peas for seed but I got greedy last season and ended up eating them all 🤣. They are one of the easiest to save so try to save them if you can but it’s hard with how yummy they taste.

Thanks Petrina for this video!!! I love the step by step tutorial for planting. I have been gardening for a few years but with mixed success. Patience is not my strong suit and I that I’ve been probably planting my seedlings too early. Often times they sprout quickly but then stall with their growth. Do you (or anyone out there) have any tips? Should I feed the seedlings to kick start them?

I had that happen for a long time then I started watering them with liquid fertilizer and water. Now every time I water my seedlings, it’s with a mixture of liquid fertilizer and water but only half strength. You will see them grow like crazy.

Try putting the water into the hole first then plant and add a little bit of water at the end.
Basically you are deep watering them..
I try to remember to do this but I always seem to forget, lol
I’m in zone 10a in Southwest florida and it is way too early to plant carrots and onions in my zone, and it’s even too hot to plant tomatoes right now. I didn’t realize that we were that different from you. I’m still waiting to plant however I did just start my seeds indoors. The ac makes it so much cooler to actually get them started, they would never start outside in our heat! I will be interested to see how yours do. We don’t start potatoes until January here.
Inside is definitely a good option if you can do that. I give mine tough love and kick them out of the nest early, lol. My garden gets good afternoon shade which I think helps a lot. We are in the low 90s during the day right now in zone 9a

My sprinkler system is on a well which is such a benefit but I also have rain barrels for my containers and greenstalks.

I am. This was pre recorded before I left. The only thing that’s being done in the garden is watering from my sprinkler system. Other than that, it’s own it’s. Once I get back, I’ll show you what lived and what died.
My zucchinis are sprouting the male flowers. How to avoid those worms now that they have different branches?🤞🏼
Spinosad and BT are your best bet. Otherwise hand picking them and covering in netting at night is another way.

It could be. I probably need to add some sand or perlite to my beds to help with drainage

It’s actually my cover crop, Sunn hemp. I chop and drop it.
May I ask what type of mulch do you use? I used straw and I suspect I've poisoned my raised beds 😭
Oh no! That’s terrible. I usually use grass clippings from my yard, dead leaves from my trees, and I chip up dead branches from my big camphor tree using a home chipper. That way I know for sure exactly what is in the mulch.
What do you do about the pests? I’ve VERY SADLY given up growing cucumbers bc the bugs just absolutely eat them up. I really want to grow cucumbers and squash, I’m in Naples FL zone 10. Do you have any suggestions at all on what to do about these bugs? I don’t have a slug problem, it’s the amphids I think but I’m not sure. I just come out and in 1 day the leaves on my squash and cucumbers are dead
I don’t usually treat aphids. Eventually something else will come along and eat them. My guess is worms for the plants you mentioned. I use Spinosad once every week or two and that solves my problem with cucumbers and squash. Good luck!

Do you know how far away would you have to plant carrots from zucchini?
There shouldn’t be an issue with planting them near each other with the exception that zucchini gets really big and can crowd out the carrots so I would say at least 3-4 feet away.
