I am sticking with Everglades tomatoes. I just planted one plant start last year about this time and now I have about 500 of them growing as ground cover all over the property after adding extra or rotting tomatoes to my mulch before applying it. I sprinkled seeds in the pots of my tropicals and kept them alive though winter in the greenhouse. I just throw them with what ever I cook up for dinner and they improve improvised homestead meals. I wrap up my fish in foil with either lemon or butter and the added Everglades tomatoes go perfect with fish.
I do love how well they self seeded. I usually have at least one or two popping up in my bed somewhere.
Oh man, I would love to try "Donna's Purple Tomato".

I’m glad to see I am not the only one growing a lot of tomato varieties. I am growing Classic Beefsteak, Dad’s Sunset, Celebrity, Grand Marshall, Thornburn’s Terra-Cotta, Early Girl Plus, Martino’s Roma, Ace-55, Sun Gold, and Black Krim.
I’m still trying to find the perfect tomato to grow in north central Alabama. So far, Classic Beefsteak, Dad’s Sunset, Martino’s Roma, Thornburn’s Terra-Cotta, and either Sun Gold, or Sun Sugar are on the permanent list. But… there are thousands of varieties to experiment with.
There’s not enough seasons, to be able to grow them all! My dream would be having enough space to grow one of every single kind

@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a AMAZING FLAVOR! I grow them every year and will never not grow them. Another one that is really tasty and ahead of my heirlooms is an Early Girl. I grow that one every year as well.
Good looking tomatoes. I did well this year with tomatoes too! To be honest I will have a variety do well one year and then not so much the next. It all depends on weather and pest. Had to laugh when your hand fit through the fence but tomato did not! 😂. Thanks for video. BTW I have a pool service company if you ever need help or advice on your pool.
Haha! I have tiny hands. I wish I would have known you did pools. We had an issue with stabilizer in our pool. Had to dump it 😮

I've found mortgage lifters do not like heat. I'm in southern La. But that 1 tomato that I myself got was amazing.
The single one I have growing seems to be doing really well, so I am looking forward to trying it. I just wish it was more prolific.
Well as far as the currant style I have only grown Everglades, although I’m having a hard time getting them to sprout this year. I went with a paste tomato style called Shelby, while the plants don’t look to good probably due to 94° weather and no rain, they have produced like crazy over 60 tomatoes per plant. Have been freezing them and I’m gonna try to make some sauce.
Might have to try the Hawaiian tomato thank you for all the info great video

Glad you are getting a good harvest. Had a good harvest myself 30 miles south of you with Big Beefs, Cherokee Purple, Large cherry, Sungold and Sweet 100's. I never have too much luck with San Marzano although some of the paste tomatos from MI Gardener did rather well. But they are all fizzling and have some sweet corn already going to take their place. Always have low expectations with corn during the summer. But it's nice to have something growing that I don't have to tend too much in the heat. After finishing BLT"s for supper tonight, licking my chops for the fall tomatoes already.

I'm south too...Sarasota. I've had some luck with some San Marzano, but beefsteak was a total loss for me, and I have NEVER been able to grow corn here. What is the secret????
My go to for paste tomatoes is Yaqui. Great disease resistance and highly productive.

My pleasure. I don’t use shade cloth, but the west side of my house is very shaded with a large group of trees so it’s not really necessary for me.
Great hanging out with you, Patrina. Great video. Now that I’m celebrating , and I am celebrating, my first full year of gardening I have so many more questions. Of the 7 varieties of tomatoes I planted only the Cherokee purple didn’t produce. As our weather (Dunedin) heats up should I just let all the tomatoes go until I no longer have any more fruits and then what? Will I have to pull the plants entirely, just cut them at soil lever or what? Is it a good idea to keep planting tomatoes again in that same bed or should I rotate crops? I’ve already got peppers and okra that came back from last summer that I am over the moon about so I’ll leave them alone this summer but wonder how many years they could continue before I have to sow new seeds. I simply can’t thank you and Jacqueline for encouraging through your videos and answering my many questions. I suppose what I’m getting at is how about a video specifically on what to do when your garden says it’s time for a refresh and what is necessary when doing raised bed gardening and you want to try new and different crops in a limited space. Forever grateful to have found your lovely channel right from my start. Count me as part of your success.
I never had great luck with Cherokee Purple either. Once they have produced, you can cut them at ground level to remove them. If you can move them to another bed, that would be the best option but if you don't have another option, you can grow them in the same spot. You run the risk of increased diseases so make sure to spray with a fungicide regularly. the pepper could live for a couple years if you don't get a frost. The okra will probably start to slow down towards the end of the summer. I did do a video last summer where i prepped for my fall garden by clearing and amending my beds. I started all of mine from seed but I usually like to start them in an AeroGarden because it’s super easy
You may want to add some tomato tone or aspirin to boost your Mortgage Lifters. I add a bit of Lime from Espoma as well as the other two since we have clay soil.
That’s actually what I used to fertilize my tomatoes. I just think the Morgage lifter hates me lol
Are you concerned that your tomatoes will cross pollinate and ruin your seed saving efforts? I enjoy your channel!
Yes. That’s true. I ended up deciding not to save any seeds this year. Normally, I will isolate a group of flowers and put a mesh bag over them to keep them from being cross pollinated but I forgot. I still have seeds for all of these so I’ll grow my favorites this fall and save them then.
Have you tried growing Floradade tomatoes? UF “made them”. I am growing those and Biltmore tomatoes here in Northeast Florida.
Yes! I grow those every season. They did good but these did a bit better. The Floradade are still setting fruit which is awesome
Great video! Thank you! I'm in South Florida and this is my first year gardening down here. 2 questions: first - do the Everglades tomatoes grow through the summer? Second - what are your thoughts on the Cherokee purple and the Black cherry tomatoes? TYIA.
Some people can get them to grow all summer, but they usually putter out for me around August. I never had much success with Cherokee purple but the black cherry does very well.
Nice tomato haul! My tomatoes haven't started blushing yet here in Zone 9a Georgia. I'm growing Sungold cherry, Black Krim, Dr. Wyche's yellow and Red Snapper. I grow them in cages but the Dr. Wyche's has surpassed the top of the cage. Its a monster plant! I've seen your video about using the Florida weave to tie your tomato plants but the set-up you have now is different. Do you have a video for this current set-up? Thanks!

When did you start your seeds and also plant your tomatoes? I am south of Tampa! My cherry tomatoes are growing well, but the other varieties aren't blooming. I do think it's the heat.
I started mine in January. Most of my flowers are not pollinating at this point because of the heat, but I still have all of the existing tomatoes that need to ripen.

How do you fertilize? Maybe the mortgage lifter didn’t have a good source of calcium for fruit setting?
I use TomatoTone fertilizer. I would agree but the plants right next to it did great. Just that plant did poorly.
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a gotcha. I’m trying moneymaker in place of mortgage lifter this year in Mississippi. They are setting a lot of fruit but I think I topped it early when it was bifurcating. Thanks for the video.

I’m getting left footed bugs and I think they are called squash bugs that sucking the life out of my tomatoes. Any suggestions? I do go out morning and evening to squish what I see.
They are pretty hard to get rid of. Keep hand picking them and try adding some companions plants next time to deter them. You could also add sunflowers away from your tomatoes as a trap plant for them. They are more interested in them.

@@kthorsen100yes. I film about a week before the video publishes. I’ve never used that before so I’m not sure. I’ve never really found any organic spray that works on leaf foot bugs
I’ve picked all of mine and pulled up all the plants. We’ve been 97 degrees every day for a month. Tomato season is over for us in Southwest Florida zone 10a/b. Mortgage Lifter has always done well for me but they aren’t tasty! This year I only grew paste and cherries.v I’m ready to make my marinara now. Is Blue Beauty the gmo tomato that rare seeds didn’t know and got in trouble for selling?
Most of mine have stopped flowering with these temps but the tomatoes are still ripening so I leave them. No, the Blue Beauty isn't the one you are thinking of. That was a purple variety. I believe they stopped selling it. What was your favorite paste tomato?
