I appreciate how you take the process from start to finish: how to grow it; how to harvest it; and how to preserve or prepare it. Thanks.
Yay đ. I was thinking of doing more videos like this. I appreciate your feedback!
I agree. I just found your channel and have been binge watching. I'm in Orlando 9b so most of your knowledge should apply to my garden. This is my second year gardening so I have a lot to learn. I'd really like to see more of what you plant and take care of in your greenstalk. Great content thanks.
@@Fl-Mamabear absolutely đ Iâll start working on a video for the greenstalks
Thank you! I loved seeing new ways to make kohlrabi. My favorite way to make it is Scalloped Kohlrabi. Basically it is a swap out with potatoes. I discovered this many years ago when doing a higher fat lower carb diet. It is delicious!
Nice! Iâll have to try that
I never eat kohlrabi Antil I started gardening and love it I put it in thr oven now I see you make it other way I love the way you cook it Thanks for sharing
My pleasure. So glad you enjoyed
Just found your channel and making the slaw and probably the fries as well.
Dit-a-lee-nĂ©e is the pronunciation. So cute your pronunciation đŠ
Lol, I was never good at pronunciation. Thanks and let me know how you like the slaw
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a Iâm originally from NJ (now in NC 28 years) so for all I know I could say it wrong but thatâs how we all said it up there đ. We Love the slaw. I added some raisins to it and used a green apple. I did use my food processor so it was a bit more fine and I think I would have liked the thicker like you made but it is delicious either way. Thanks for sharing it
@@justdi3347 glad you enjoyed it
I stumbled with one of your videos a few days ago and I love all of ur content! Thank u for showing us the kohlrabi veggie! Never heard of it!
Welcome!! Iâm glad you enjoyed it
I've seen this veggie in stores before but never tried it. Thanks for the recipes. Gonna have to try it now...
I hope you enjoy it đ
let me have some soup from yours, please? You're making me hungry!
Haha đ
I grew a monster kohlrabi this last spring but it never bulbed up. It now has many offshoots and is massive in size because of all of the leaves. So instead of cutting it down this summer I let it continue to grow. Still no bulbing (Iâm sure because of the many over 100 degree days) but harvested many leaves from it. I combined it with my collards and cooked them and canned them southern style and spicy. Best harvest ever! Donât throw out those leaves! Especially if those are all your kohlrabi produced lol. đ
Great way to make lemon aid out of lemons! I love kohlrabi leaves. They remind me of broccoli leaves. So good
I have never seen that before, heard of it though! I will try them now. I really like your spice rack! I need to be organized đ
They are so good. My hubby found me that spice rack. Iâm in love with it.
I am trying to grow a couple, just because they are so...weird cool looking. Sorry if you mentioned in another video, but WHAT are you fertilizing with? Those are crazy big!
I love broccoli stems. How do these compare to crunching on a broccoli stem?
"Vegetable Forward" LOL, that's great! Thanks for the recipes!
My pleasure. The only fertilizer I used was tomatotone at the start of the season. I did give compost tea a shot this season which I think helped too. They are exactly like broccoli stems. Taste and texture. And they grow longer into the warm season unlike broccoli
Nice cooking
Thanks!
I never heard about kohlrabi until I came across you video, I live in chicago so gonna try and grow some thanks again!
@@williamrosario6369 nice! I hope you enjoy them
I've always heard it Pronounced as Kal A Robbie
Looks very good. I am going to try to plant some. Iâll need to find out when to plant in sw fl.
You probably can plant them now but itâs going to be your last round. They are a bit more heat tolerant than other brassicas from my experience
I love that pasta and use it a lot. This might help with the pronunciation, dee-tah-LEE-nee. Does that even matter? I love how you say it. I'm excited about my Kohlrobi, they finally bulbing up. The hurricanes and freezes scared them into getting fat. Thatâs my story and Iâm sticking with it. It will be my first time tasting them. I'm sure I will love them as I am a big brassica fan. Your video was very helpful, I didnât know about the thick fiber skin. Thank you!
Haha đ I never sound things out right. Iâm notorious for it. Thanks for the actual pronunciation. I usually threaten my broccoli to head up and that usually works. Brassica are drama queens đ€Łđ„Šđ
How big do you let the kohlrabi get & how do you store it? Thanks for the recipes. Lorraine
A little bigger than a baseball. Anything bigger gets a bit woody. I store them in open baggies in the crisper drawer of my fridge. They last a few weeks that way. đ©âđŸ
Great-looking recipes oh, I just pulled some out of the garden it is August 2023 instead of carrots I may use cucumber or zucchini. I like the soup a lot and I'll try the fries, maybe in a airfryer might be better and crisp them up, thank you
Yes! I think an air fryer would definitely be better for the fries. Enjoy
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a Thank you for the response. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos, have agreat dayđHope you stay safe from the storms!
Thanks so much đ
â@@HomegrownFloridaZ9aI hope you guys are doing well with the storm, just wanted to let you know I made the slaw just now and OMG it came out fantastic! Instead of any sugar or splenda, I've added Granny Smith balsamic vinegar which sweetened it up. I don't know if I can wait a few hours to eat it LOL, thank you again
@ALPHAJACK78 yay! Iâm so glad you liked it. Great swap with the vinegar. We are safe and sound here. The hurricane passed by us, thankfully.
Great video! I appreciate knowing more about that kolrobi thing đ. But i must sat that celery seed is a must in a slaw. đ
This is super helpful! So direct seed or starter? Where do you get these babies?
I never thought to add celery seed but that does sound really good. You can transplant or direct seed. They are very forgiving and sturdy. Lots of places carry seeds including places like Home Depot or Burpee
GREAT video! Yes! Kohlrabi DOES look like an alien. And the recipes? Canât wait to try. I have only seen this vegetable on âChoppedâ. Would you mind sharing your âlittle oven â brand? My countertop toaster oven doesnât seem to work nearly as well as when it was new. Iâm like the size of yours as well. Thanks again for taking the time to educate your fansđ
So glad you liked it. I absolutely love my little oven. Itâs a nuwave bravo. This is the link to it on Amazon. Takes a little getting used to it because it has so many options but I end up using it everyday. I only use my regular oven to bake bread. amzn.to/3H0KbDM
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a very good to know. Thank you!
Do you already have a video on how you make your veggie base or do you have a recipe? That seems like a great item to have on hand. I have been pressure canning for less than a year and usually follow the UDSA guidelines but I'm not against other canning recipes. Thanks for sharing!
I havenât done that yet but I do follow the USDA âYour Choiceâ soup recipe for my veggie base. Itâs basically just carrots, onions, celery, and tomatoes half full then broth the rest of the jar. Here is the link. www.healthycanning.com/usdas-your-choice-soup-recipe
Where did you get the lid opener for your pressure canned food? Iâve cracked at least 4 jars just trying to pry off the lid!!!
I found this sweet lady on Facebook that sells them. She has a website called www.canningjarpopper.com
I absolutely love mine because it never bends the lids and makes it super easy to get off.
Have you tried canning kohlrabi?
No, I havenât yet. Iâm not sure Iâve ever seen a tested recipe that includes it.
Try with a cream sauce
Ooh that sounds good!
How would it be if you pickled it?
Iâm not sure. Itâs similar to broccoli in taste but Iâve never pickled broccoli before.
On a different note I am growing Puerto Rican black bean for the first time . How do you know when it is ready to pick?
Wait for the pods to dry completely. They should feel crispy like paper. Thatâs when they are ready to pick and separate the beans from the pods
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a thank you
Will it grow another one?
No, itâs a one and done crop
What's the growing days of the kohlrabi?
I believe itâs about 60 days but sometimes they come in even sooner
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a thanks. Will put on for fall garden.
You may still have a little time to plant for spring if you start soon
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a I'm redoing some of my beds so kinda waiting to harvest before I plant any more. I'm pretty full right now.
Good plan. Perfect time of year for the big projects
Hi, just wondering how many do you plant every year, I growing 6 this year
I think 6 is good for 1 person. We are huge fans of broccoli (which it tastes like) so we grow about 15-20 over the winter season.
