    So timely and so helpful! Thank you!
    I do my beans/peas/squashes in toilet paper rolls filled with seed starting mix. They sit in a bowl or takeout container with gravel with a bit of water under them. When its time to pot up or out, the whole soggy roll goes in, no root disturbance. it is harder to keep them moist, but as these plants are usually fast growing, I can put up with several days of hand holding.
    I use perlite as a cover for the seeds as they germinate. They are light, so any seedling can push through, they help hold water to keep the moisture in contact with the seed. So anything that needs to be covered over for germination gets a little sprinkle over (holding my breath so don't inhale that dust!)
    I love how seedlings started in Aerogarden are so sturdy; they look more robust than store-bought starts. I am hoping that seed trays set next to the hydroponic unit can also take advantage of the light and not be as stretched out.

    Good blow by blow video for us Florida gardeners. Only thing I might disagree with are grass clippings for mulch. Did that about 20 years ago and ended up with a better lawn in my veggie garden than my real lawn. Still pulling out grass this morning prepping things for the fall garden.

      I don’t experience that but I think it’s because we cut ours so often, it doesn’t get a chance to create seed. Once it seeds, it can be a nightmare.

Gave up on that madness years back and just let things grow with fertilization maybe once every two years whether it needs it or not and maybe a watering about three times a year. My garden is already looking fantastic and I have no issues with bugs. Just had a couple of eggplants that are, finally, starting to fruit after dropping flowers for two months. They are spectacular plants taller than I am.

    Slightly off subject question. When adding tomato tone or garden tone fertilizers to your plants how often to you use it and do you have to pull the mulch away and put this fertilizer into the soil then replace the mulch?

    • @HomegrownFloridaZ9a
      @HomegrownFloridaZ9a  Před 11 měsíci

      I start by putting some in the hole when I add the transplant that usually covers them for at least a month or two and then I do add it to the top and I do push the mulch away, put the fertilizer down, and then scratch it into the surface, and then reapply the mulch. I do that about once a month after the first round.

    Wow! What a thorough guide! Thank you! I thought I was the only one to plant indoors in hydroponics. ☺️Haha. Last year it was the only way I could get any lettuce to germinate early fall because it stayed so hot in the fall here in east Texas. This year I’ve been sprouting lots of my seeds in damp paper towels in baggies (I reuse them several times) and then plant them outside, even my squash which don’t seem to mind it at all. It’s fun to sprout the seeds first. It *seems* like the process goes faster even though it’s probably just because I get to watch them sprout instead of having to wait to see them emerge from the soil. It caters to my impatience quite well and I can grow lots of things I had to start hydroponically otherwise. Granted I’m not growing lettuce yet by any means. It’s 100-108 here most days. 😬I am growing amaranth though! Seems to be great direct seeded too! I’m learning about all these cool heat loving plants!

    Great job. The information you provided will help out a lot 👍.
    I'm south of you in Broward county and the majority of the problems I've been dealing with is bugs and moisture. Too many bugs and not enough moisture. I've been adding mulch over my seedlings but didn't think about the paper rolls around the seedlings 👍. I had cucumbers for a while in may and June but they finally succumbed to the heat. My second generation strawberries are my interest at hand. They've suffered a bit from this summer weather but the root system still looks good. I've been dumping a mix of homemade compost with sand and grass clippings on them and you're right, it is Hot and mushy three to four inches down 😜.
    Question, what works best to protect squash from pests down here? I've been having a problem with ants and leaf cutters big time this year 👍❤️🙏.

    • @HomegrownFloridaZ9a
      @HomegrownFloridaZ9a  Před 9 měsíci

      BT and Spinosad work great for leaf cutters. Ants are normally not an issue but lots of ants usually indicate something worse like mealybugs or aphids. Spraying off with water every day usually keeps them in check until the predator bugs come and find them. It’s tough right now but in another 30 days the population of bugs should go way down.
