  • In this month’s Grow Guide, I focus on vegetable crops and plants that can be started from seed or planted during the month of August. I'll cover important garden tasks like solarizing garden spaces, techniques for sowing seeds, and how to choose the correct cultivars for your garden. I also discuss fall garden planting since I start sowing seeds from July thru September for my fall harvest.
    If you’re looking to start some plants from seed or plant some vegetables in your garden this month, be sure to check out my Grow Guide! I hope you find this guide helpful as you garden in August!

    You've convinced me to sow indoors. I added a 5 tier shelf in front of my window. The heat/elements have stunted my seedlings in the past.

      Nice! Whenever I sow indoors the transplants are always the healthiest batch.

    Really good list. Thanks for all your videos they gave me the push to start my tomato and pepper seeds this week. I was feeling a little burned out with all the pests, diseases and heat but now I am slowly starting to get on top of it 🎉

    New subbie. I’ve been having a time with my brassicas in this heat. I started them indoors and have been putting them outside for a few hours on my screened porch but even that it’s way too hot. I ordered covers to cover them. Amazing video. Thank you so much!

    I've been growing Long Island Cheese pumpkins earlier in the year and despite some worm pressure, they've been exploding. Now for my fall garden I'm growing Seminole pumpkins, more Long Islands, and as a test, Connecticut Field pumpkins that I will monitor heavily from pest pressure. Wish me luck on that one lol

    l always thought that culantro would grow best in summer but now I know that I have to sow seeds in october

    • @JerrasGarden
      @JerrasGarden  Před rokem +2

      I know culantro is more heat tolerant than cilantro but I find it still grows best during fall, winter, and spring.

      I’m trying Caribe cilantro. It’s supposedly heat tolerant. I have them sown indoors and outdoors. I can’t wait to see how it does in this heat.

    Hi Jerra! I’m loving all your info! Thank you! I’d like to polarize one of my raised bed garden spaces before I transplant in Sept / Oct. I purchased your recommended husky plastic sheeting wondering if you have a video on how to properly put this down? I’m in FL 10a zone. Is it as simple as laying down and pinning or stapling around the wood slabs? Than you!

    • @JerrasGarden
      @JerrasGarden  Před rokem +1

      Hi. I took a weed eater to clear out the taller grasses and weeds in the area and then laid the plastic sheets down over it all. I used the extra long landscape hooks to keep it down on all the edges. Can also place heavy items around the edges to keep it down. I will have to make a video soon.

    I have started some Malabar spinach from the seeds of my mature red stemmed Malabar vine plant, they are growing fast. I'm wondering if you have any recipes for them? So far I have tried them by first cooking up some bacon, removing bacon and then cooking the onion and Malabar leaves in the bacon grease, removed it, and added all three things to things like eggs, or potatoes. I enjoyed it but I'd like more things to do with it.

    • @JerrasGarden
      @JerrasGarden  Před rokem +1

      I harvest the leaves when they are very young and small to toss with some other greens to make a salad. Or I have sautéed with kale and mixed that together with diced up roasted butternut squash and roasted pepitas for crunch.

      I have a yellow Jamaican strawberry tree but at the present time, I don't have seeds or plants for it on my website. It is normally propagated thru cuttings. I will some day though ☺

    Jerra I’m in Orlando top Zone 9b. Do you recommend using the heat mats under the the seeds you sow indoors or the seeds in your enclosed patio?

    • @JerrasGarden
      @JerrasGarden  Před rokem

      Hi. I only recommend using heat mats with the warm weather crops. If your sowing outdoors, and its very hot like it is now, the warm weather crops don't need more heat from a heat mat to germinate quickly. Usually I use heat mats when I sow seeds for warm weather crops in doors during the winter.

    Probably a very stupid question but do you puncture holes in your solo cups for the seedlings?

    • @JerrasGarden
      @JerrasGarden  Před rokem +1

      Not a stupid question at all. People ask me this all the time. I use scissors to cut three holes on the bottom of the solo cups.
