Legit. The NFL owners were furious that Buffalo opted to renovate their stadium than push for a new facility several years ago, because other cities might start to balk at the huge price tags they have to pay. Nobody wants to be the one that took a step back.
The same thing happened in Canada when BC Place was being renovated. They built a temporary stadium out of modular bleachers for the CFL and MLS teams, which actually looked pretty decent from a distance, but the other CFL and MLS teams were anxious for them to move out as soon as possible. They didn't want their cities to see what could be built for $14.4 million and wonder why they need to spend a couple hundred million themselves. (though they did have a point, because while it looked pretty neat, Empire Field was just an aluminum skeleton with tarps for walls. There was no real structure, or any facilities built in, and it wouldn't have lasted as a permanent structure)

@@lukebartlett5678 Actually, the Patriots are the only team in the NFL that can prove they are profitable for their city. When they moved from Boston to Foxboro in 1971, the town had only two rules: 1) No baseball; and 2) The Patriots had to add a surcharge to every ticket sold, and pay it to the town. Interestingly, Schaefer Stadium was privately funded: only $7 million, and it showed. It was both the best and the worst stadium in the NFL: excellent nightlines, perfect for watching football; but it was mostly cold aluminum benches, a dirt parking lot, and not enough restrooms.

First, go to stadiums like the L.A. Colisium or the Rose Bowl. They are relatively simple structures and thus cheaper to build. Modern stadiums are FAR more complex with far more amenities. Add-in heaps of Government and environmental regulations(and Luddite opposition) and the costs skyrocket.

So what did they do? They had a few stadiums that were almost like pre fabricated, shipped, assembled, then disassembled afterwards and sold to another permanent location. Every city will also agree to public funds, as the labor costs alone will funnel right back into the city's economy.. and thus boost local sale taxes if not local property taxes. It's become big money and major economic boosts for these cities, even if only for a 3-4 year term during construction and initial operation.

My problem with this is that I see no reason why stadia should use public funding especially if the said team isn't going to pay rent on use of it. Sure it's great that your team gets a fancy new stadium, but why should the average person pay for it when these franchises are making millions if not billions a year? It's fucked up, in my eyes, that teams extort the city they are in for a new billion dollar stadium by threatening to move because they know how much pride them willing brings to a city. At least in Europe if a club wants a new stadium they use their own money, because that's what should happen, they also really don't pick up and move to another city (expect AFC Wimbledon/ MK Dons). I just feel like higher taxes for years to come to pay off a billion dollar expense that the city doesn't own doesn't make sense. Like half the time the city and team split the expense but it's still the team that makes money on gate receipts and any other events held in there that aren't related to sports, i.e. concerts. Now if you told me that Pittsburgh was building a $3 billion stadium for the Steelers and the team was paying a yearly lease on it until they own it and they don't make money on any non football event, I might be down. But honestly, I'm still paying for Hinez Field and PNC Park and PPG Paints Arena and I'll probably still be paying for them when each team inevitable gets a new stadium
